Atletico had considered going in to the new season with Hubner as a fifth choice defender but with funds to spend there was always a likelihood that they would make a move to sign a better option and keep Hubner as emergency back up.
Atletico liked the look of Manchester Uniteds Nianzou but a bid of £151m did not seem to move Steve Outten. With cash sparce around the league Atletico's argument was that prices should therefore be lower than in the close season when cash was rich. Indeed Atletico had perhaps generously sold Boniface for £50m lower than a similar player sold for this close season. Juventus were also keep on Nianzou and Atletico were not keen on entering a bidding war keeping their maximum bid at £151m. Juventus on deadline day stumped up £175m and Atletico agreed a £150m deal for Sutalo. This does now add perhaps the depth Atletico were missing. With 12 top class players and Hubner and Nainggolan as decent starting back ups they have more options of dealing with suspensions and injuries.
With the signing of Sutalo, Glik who was last seasons emergency back up joined Fiorentina on loan for an initial half a season.
The pre-season cup starts tomorrow with the first game against Bournemouth.
