BONANZA DETAILS COMING SOON
Going by the scoreline this was a very close game although the stats do tell a different story. We was two goals to the good after just eight minutes of play and at that point it looked like this was going to be a breeze although Lisbon have their GK in particular to thank for keeping the score down and it just goes to show how easy it is to slip up regardless of how much a team dominates the proceedings as we ended up with just a very narrow victory. Our EFL Cup exit goes to prove that bossing games guarantees nothing hence nothing can be taken for granted.
This game seemed like a good opportunity to try and put back-to-back defeats against Juve and PSG behind us. With home advantage and tactical advantage it took only 14 minutes before Atletico though van de Van. The home side were in complete dominance but somehow Rangers levelled on 32 minutes. Havertz more or less immediately restored the lead on 35 minutes and at half-time a very dominant display from Atletico.
Straight out of the blocks and it was no surprise when Atletico scored again after 48 minutes, this time Olmo. Atletico once again found a way to keep home fans nerves on edge by immediately conceding to make it 3-2.
After 65 minutes Marsh made changes at 1 goal up. Rangers took the tactical advantage and were all over the home side in the latter quarter of the game
Thankfully no further goals were scored.
Marsh commented "A win, but a frustrating one that we made such hard work of it. We had a 18-13 shot count overall but 6 of the away shots came from 80-minutes on. We really should have been further than 3-2 ahead and not giving up tactical advantage but as always there seems to be a part of the side that does not function. Tonight it was the goalkeeping department".
After crashing out of the cup earlier in the week, a trip to Munich wasn’t what we needed but it’s what we had to face.
In recent seasons we’ve thrown caution to the wind vs a rebuilding Bayern team and have come unstuck so we opted to play a bit more cautiously and in the end so did our hosts with us both playing C with 6 defensive players.
After a first 15 minutes entirely dominated by Bayern it looked like we were in for a tough game but just 3 minutes later we took the lead through F_Wirtz, completely against the run of play.
The rest of the half was back and forth but the score was still 1-0 at the break.
The second half was much like the first half after the goal with both teams creating chances without any success with long term Juventus transfer target Xavi Simons wasting his team’s best chance in the 93rd minute after he missed the chance to slot the ball in from a rebound and we ran out 1-0 winners.
Statistically there wasn’t much between the two teams so it was probably the squad strength difference that saw us earn all 3 points this time.
This was a game I'd guess both managers thought they might be able to win, but both will be a little disappointed they didn't.
The 2 promoted teams both set up with a passing tactic, but it didn't really lead to an open or that entertaining a game, as most shots went wide of the goal, and the keepers were up to anything that came their way. gg dude.
The stats were fairly even.
Positives - Still unbeaten, clean sheet at last, Diaz up to 24 rated, injury turned out to be minor
Negatives - Still no win, another injury, not great performance
With the injury to Coutinho, the manager has decided to bite the bullet and part with Militao, to bring in a 2 for 1 to help bolster the paper thin squad.
We went into the game top of the table boasting the only 100% record in EFL1. We matched Inter on shots, but unfortunately it was just one of those days when the weaker forwards score more goals against the better goalkeeper, than the better forwards score against the weaker goalkeeper. Nothing that you can do about these things. Disappointing that we led the game and got turned over. We drop to 4th in the table below todays opponents. and Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
GG Johnboy.
