Lens are pleased to announce the signing of striker Anthony Martial. The deal was confirmed on the 7th of July and he will be joining with the squad this coming week. Martial joins from German club Bayer Leverkusen on a deal that saw M_Rajovic move in the opposite direction.
During a joint press conference with the transfer team, the gaffer was quoted as saying,
“Leverkusen were looking to add another young striker with Martial as the make weight. After showing signs of struggling with our finishing, we thought it best to address the problem sooner rather than later. Anthony slots in as the clear number 1 striker, with Becker able to be used as super sub later in matches.
Having a high quality striker is critical with what we are trying to do. Playing with a true number 9 as the tip of the spear will ensure Martial gets his opportunities. Hopefully he is able to convert those chances for us. We brought him here for one reason and we envisage him among the leaders in EFL 2 when it comes to goals. Further, being able to rely on Becker’s versatility later in matches particularly when we are protecting a lead is an added benefit that we considered.”
The club continues to tell fans and the media that transfer business is done for now, yet the squad remains in flux. With four points out of the first three matches, Lens are performing within expectations. A run at the playoff spots would make this an exciting campaign for all.
