Business finally appears to be picking up at Anfield as with only minutes of November remaining on the clock Liverpool announced the arrival of a new signing and the departure of an old friend.
There had been plenty of speculation that veteran German defender Mats Hummels could be on his way out of the club as the manager looked to bring in a younger replacement. That speculation became reality as manager Graeme Edwards confirmed that an agreement had been reached with ambitious Lancashire outfit Blackburn Rovers who have clinched the signing of Hummels for the final year of his playing career for a sum believed to be £18m.
No sooner had the departure of Hummels been confirmed the Merseyside club announced that a deal had been struck with fellow Premier League side Burnley to secure the services of their talented 31 year old Mozambique international Reinildo. The defender will reportedly cost Liverpool a fee of £54m - a lot of money for a player of that age - but an amount of money that the club were prepared to pay to bring the player to Anfield.
Edwards confirmed the news tonight and that other discussions are ongoing which could see other players leave and arrive at the club "Yes a deal has been agreed with Blackburn for Mats and we will be sad to see him go. He come in here last season when the club was in a real period of transition and his leadership and consistency of performance really made a difference. He was every much the model professional that we thought that we were bringing in and I have nothing but positive words about the lad. He's still a top top player even at the age that he is and we wish him all the best for the final year of his playing career. Blackburn are a good project with an ambitious manager and I am sure he will do well there"
Edwards continued "As Mats departs we are delighted to announce that we have agreed a deal with Burnley for Reinildo. He's a player we've admired for some time and we're very pleased to bring him in. He'll be a key player in the heart of our defence this coming season and hopefully for a couple of seasons beyond that"
The Scot concluded "Things are certainly starting to hot up for us during this bonanza. We have talks ongoing with a couple of clubs for other potential deals and we are confident that we'll get these over the line in the next day or two. We like to move quickly and hopefully we can announce something more concrete soon enough. The squad is starting to take shape as we freshen things up for the season ahead and hopefully our supporters will be pleased with the business that we are conducting"
