    Atletico Madrid 0 - 0 Napoli

A damp squib to end the season on but the team go into the DPT final with the full squad available to choose from.

For Atletico it was an improvement from last seasons 08th place finish to 7th this. However, in truth this was a season that is seen as a failure with performances to finish as high as third place but results could not match. Whether this was just the luck of poor goalkeeping and finishing or something lacking tactically is the answer Marsh needs to find out and answer next season as top-4 will be the minimum target set.

Marsh commented "I can only apologise to the fans who have followed us well all season but havent quite had the season they should have got. We could so easily have got 10-15 points more but we need to try and understand why and come back next season trying to be better. We have zero transfers in place at present and I rarely get involved in deals until the season has officially ended. We will sit down have the DPT final and have a look at things but its unlikely we will see many changes this close season".

    Bayer Leverkusen 0 - 1 Atletico Madrid

With the DPT final fast approaching the club were back to full team selection but opted to wrap Sessegnon in cotton wool to avoid a booking that would see him miss the final. The main target of the game was to remain injury and suspension free. The bonus was a Saint Maximin goal that won a closely fought game and guaranteed Atletico 7th place minimum with outside shot of 6th.

Marsh commented "We have lost so many points that it was nice to get a couple of back with a victory that was fortunate. The decision now will be whether we try and win the last game to have a go at 6th place or preserve the side for the DPT final".

    PSG 2 - 0 Atletico Madrid

Travelling weakened to PSG is never a good idea but the side was set up to dig in and get something from the game. The plan was working relatively well until Sessegnon's second yellow card meant 10-man football and PSG more or less immediately scored. Atletico had to come out and this inevitably allowed a second goal.

Marsh commented "One dosnt expect to beat PSG often and I think you need a bit of luck. Unfortunately whenever we play them they tend to get all the luck on top of their beast squad. Its frustrating as we had a chance of getting a point until the soft dismissal".

Atletico are guarantee a 9th placed finish now. Two more points would guarantee champions league football returns to the club. Six more points would ensure 7th place. Unfortunately the club still have two players missing with in-form Bayern up next.

    Sporting Lisbon 2 - 5 Atletico Madrid

Both sides had two players missing. Sporting two defenders and Atletico one defender and one striker. Lisbons lack of depth perhaps more crucial in determining the winning side. The game was open as Marsh felt his side would create a lot more chances. The shot count however, was 26-29 and it was only Atleticos more clinical finishing on the day that won an important three points.

    Real Madrid 75 +59
    Juventus 73 +34
    PSG 67 +54
    Inter 64 +19
    Bayern 63 +18
    AC Milan 60 +17
    Atletico 59 +23
    Barcelona 55 + 9
    ------------------
    Sevilla 50 -10
    Roma 49 + 2

From the updated league table Atletico need three more points to ensure champions league football next season.

Marsh commented "Whilst we closed in on Milan only, we have pulled away from the three sides below us. We may have to lower our target to 6th place given our next game is at PSG with players missing. We realistically only have 9 more points to play for".

    Atletico Madrid 4 - 0 Borussia Dortmund

With the push for champions league football and extra prize money the requirement, Atletico would go into this game without Odegaard. Goals however, would come from all over the pitch J_Frimpong (14), K_Havertz (18), B_Cristante (30), R_Sessegnon (70) in a game Atletico dominated with a 21-5 shot count.

The win would move Atletico up the league table into seventh place but with only Ac Milan slipping up no real progress was made in climbing the league. The main advantage was only a draw for Sevilla and defeat for Roma which leaves Atletico with a healthy 5 points + goal difference lead over 9th place. Altetico do have designs on pushing higher still but have a lot of work to do.

Agonising for the club were injuries to M_Skriniar (2) / Saint_Maximin (3). It seems quite some time since Atletico had all players available and the club have had a lot more injuries than previously this season. Huge selection headaches then for the next 2 games against Lisbon and PSG.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "If we could just find some luck this season we would be right up there challenging. I cant believe we are only 16 points off the top of the league. When I review the season we could have been in the mix but we just seem to take 2 step forwards and something happens to hamper us back one. Today, we get a great win but then suffer with losing players. To be honest, like last season it will be good to close this one. We just need to get as many point on the board as possible and try and beat Liverpool in the final who are going great guns".

    Fiorentina 1 - 0 Atletico Madrid

Fiorentina have been a club in form moving away from the fringes of relegation into a comfortable mid table position chasing down an 11th placed position. This game proved on the night to be very difficult as the home side controlled the game with an impressive 19-11 shot count. Back to the drawing board as Atletico champions league qualification again looks in the balance with Sevilla pushing still and Roma form improving.

Marsh commented "Neil has done a fair amount of wheeling and dealing recently and the club has progressed for it. We were thoroughly outplayed in this one and must try to be better in the next fixture".

    Atletico Madrid 1 - 0 Monaco

Never going to be an easy game with two of the attacking players missing. Atletico gave a debut to new signing M_Adopo. Marsh wanted to play european style but didnt really have the right players to fit into it so it was a patched up effort. R_Sessegnon (9) pushed into an unfamiliar attacking midfield role did what the manager wanted by scoring the only goal of the game early on. Chances fell to both sides in a 16-10 shot overall shot count.

The match got more scrappy towards the end when two bizarre substitutions from Marsh severely weakened his team for the last third of the game.

Marsh explained "We like to sort out teamsheets out quite early and had more or less completed it straight after the last game. However, with the possibility of deals going through we didnt complete it. We then completely forgot about the game until late in the day and sent it what we thought was a completed teamsheet only to find two players entering the field of play that shouldnt have. We had a 4-12-17 playing in defensive midfield for 21 minutes!!".

Marsh continued "We were relieved to get the three points all things considered what with players missing and then my shocking mistakes. With other sides mainly winning it was imperative we did the same".

    ==

With 8 games to go the EFL title race is closing to an end with just a few hurdles and the home straight to go. The season kicked off with Real Madrid and PSG expected to go head to head for the title with Roma, Juventus and Atletico Madrid the best of the rest.

Real Madrid are very much in the title hunt. Only 2 games ago most punters were writing them off but roll on two games and Real have reached the summit albeit on goal difference.
Real have had an astonishing 644 shots on opponents goals at an average of 21.47 per game. Add to that the fact that Real are the 3rd most clinical side in the league scoring every 6.71 shots and its easy to see how they have simply bludgeoned their way to 96 goals. A positive shot count of +282

Juventus have been the surprise title challengers who not only have come out of the pack but have been leading the league for large parts of the season. Its been done with efficiency at both end of the field as they are the most clinical side in the league scoring every 6.44 shots with their positive shot count quite tame at +89. Their goalkeeper has been in stunning form and is leading the league for keeping shots out conceding at 10.78 shots per game. The ratio of -4.34 sees Juventus at the top of the "esms gods luck charts" by a country mile.

Paris St Germain in many peoples minds are the best side in FFO so what has gone wrong this season. 11 points adrift of the summit their league season has been one of frustration for the french fans. A positive shot count of +216 would suggest they should be in the top-2. The statistics at both ends of the field (5th best shooters/3rd best GK) are good so statistically PSG have been pretty good so its hard to see why they are so far behind.

Atletico Madrid are right down in 8th place at present. Statistics say they should be higher with a positive shot count of +145 but their goalkeeper has had a poor season conceding at 7.76 shots per goal. There is still time to improve but the team need more from Martinez.

Roma boss Hamza has come in for some criticism this season for the alarming drop off in form that sees the club drop from title challengers to 10th in the league. Statistics do show Roma to be by far the unluckiest side of the better paper teams. Scoring goals at 10.14 shots perhaps tells Hamza he shouldnt have sold off the top strikers so early. A positive shot count of +84 into a -2 goal difference does cast a dirty look at the esms gods though.

Improving every season (since GS left) Inter Milan have taken the most advantage and are currently in third place and have also enjoyed good cup success. They do have the fourth highest positive shot count of +121. Can Inter sneak into the title race? Not likely with 9 points the difference. Inters goal will be to try and stay in third spot.

    Barcelona 2 - 1 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid performance was once again good enough but the team again failed to get the result their efforts deserved. An 8-12 shot count should have been more than enough to get something from the game but the bad luck that has followed the club for the past almost 2 seasons now continues. Atletico pegged back Barca to make it 2-1 after 53 minutes but their attempts at drawing level were hit badly when injury forced a 13-18-5 Stepanenko into an attacking midfield position for 20 minutes.

Not only did the club lose this tight game more bad injury news followed that sees Odegaard missing for 3 games and a booking for Muani means he misses the next game suspended. The teams attacking options for the home game against Monaco are severely depleted.

Marsh commented "We really are cursed it seems. Statistically we have been the third best side in the league and yet we are threatened by finishing outside the top-8 again. We have got through the harder half of fixtures so it is up to us now to try and have a good last 8 games of the season. We could still finish 3rd with a really good run but its going to need 6-7 wins to to get closer to where we should be".

Crystal Palace 1 - 3 Atletico Madrid (1-5 on aggregate)

Atletico had done a great job in the first leg with a 2-0 home win and so a decent performance here should have been enough to send them through to the final.
Palace however came out of the blocks guns blazing when Anton scored a goal to make the tie 1-2 after only 3 minutes of the game. The away side regained their composure and took control of the tie with goals from M_Odegaard (23), R_K_Muani (25 pen) and R_Sessegnon (31). The victory takes Atletico Madrid into the final of the DPT where they will play Liverpool.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "I am delighted to get to the final. This is perhaps a final we should have got to 3 seasons ago but over-achieved by getting into the champions league places every season. The first season we missed out we have done what the bookies thought we should and made the final. We have never really made it good in the end of season prize money so this ahcievement should help in the close season to build but more than anything its a chance for me to get my first silverware in FFO. There is a lot of games to play before the final but we look forwards to it".

Liverpool should be stiff opposition who are managed by in some peoples minds the best manager out there. Liverpool are third in the Premier League at present. Atletico seventh in the EFL1. Hopefully both sides will be a full strength on the day.

    Atletico Madrid 0 - 1 Inter Milan

Could Atletico get away with having their substitute goalkeeper for the 3 games..........victory against Palace and Celtic but Inter are another level up. Marsh felt that the away side would come out all guns attacking the weakness particularly since Atletico had used the D-tactic in previous two games. Marsh therefore decided to plump for counter-attacking to try and get the shot count as favourable as possible and hope that Dahmen could do a decent job. The thinking had little effect when Inter turned up countering also! The home side however create an 11-5 shot count which could have been enough but in true fashion they couldnt score and lost the game 0-1.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "I think overall we have done marvelously well over the 3 games. Reserve goalkeepers in FFO are generally shocking quality. We looked at attempting to upgrade our number two for this game but there are very few teams with 21-rated keepers and above so we stuck with Dahmen. The secret is not getting your number one injured but true to our luck Martinez has left the field of play injured 3 times this season".

The defeat puts a huge dent in the hopes of finishing as high up the league as possible.

Next up will be the home leg of the semi final of the DPT Cup against Crystal Palace.

    Celtic 1 Atletico Madrid 2

The second game of a weakened Atletico resulted in another victory. B_Cristante (14) opened the scoring despite the away teams sold looking tactics. A change to counter brought more joy when R_K_Muani (25) doubled the lead. Atletico contolled the game well and protected Dahmen who performed admirably with what he had to do until a late goal brought an anxious end to the end.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "We would have taken a point pre-match so this was a great result. We are up to 07th place and still chasing 3rd place. From here we shouldnt finish any lower than 09th".

The players are going well in a bid to retain as many players as possible for next season. Bronico was the latest to get to his targeted amount in this game.

Pieters needs 62 at an average of 4.91
Tanner 35 at an average of 3.18
Stepanenko 99 at an average of 9.00

Arize has been told he has no future at the club and will leave at the season end. The worst free player in the league has played only 6 minutes all season.

    Atletico Madrid 3 Roma 0

Well what a topsy turvy night of all emotions.

Firstly an incredible performance to hammer Roma 4-0. A shot count of 22-11 was brilliant against a top-4 EFL team who are struggling with form. Saint_Maximin (23), R_K_Muani (32,66), M_van_de_Ven (78) scored the goals on the evening.
The terrible news to come following the game is an injury to Martinez that will keep him out of the league games of Celtic and Inter but more importantly the DPT semi final first leg.
In addition the clubs best defender Skriniar took a fifth booking of the season which will also keep him out of the DPT semi-final.
    A cruel twist of fate.
Crazily the club did a deal with Napoli today for Haraslin to join them at the end of the week. Haraslin has been given game time but was unable to gain any abs until tonight when he suddently popped up with an assist. Napoli are now getting themselves a bargain!
