Banks replaces Banks as Newcastle United look to steady the ship for final 15 games of the season
Last week saw the shocking departure of Newcastle United manager Chris Banks who left the club after years in charge of the North East club.
Banks left the club sitting mid table in the Premier league after 3 up and down seasons which saw the club finish 7th, 14th & 8th in the previous 3 seasons but with this season's fate still undecided, can Newcastle United sneak back into the top 8 and thus the Champions League competition for Season 5? The club currently sit 5 points adrift of Blackburn Rovers in 8th with 15 games remaining.
After a week without a manager, the Newcastle United board moved to appoint Juventus manager Andy Banks as caretaker manager until a permanent manager can be found.
With Banks' first game in charge set to be tomorrow against struggling Everton, what impact can the experienced Banks (Andy Banks) bring to the club? Banks has a strong track record of coming into a club for a short period of time and turning fortunes around at the clubs he's been involved in.
Previously this season, Banks was given the challenging task of steering Brentford away from the Championship trap door and during his 9 games at the club, Brentford were unbeaten and the strength of the first team was improved with signings such as P_Daka & M_Maignan but can Banks do the same for the Magpies?
It's thought that Banks is merely keeping the Newcastle United hotseat warm for former AS Roma legend Derek Hughes as Hughes' boyhood club is Newcastle United, but this is only speculation at this time.
Newcastle United are on a run of just 1 win in the last 6 games, a run that has seen them fall away from the Premier League title race and thus out of the top 8, into a DPT qualification place.
Just looking at the Premier League table, it's clear that the team just aren't scoring enough while they're conceding too many with the club shamefully boasting a 0 goal difference as they've both scored and conceded 41 goals this season after 23 games.
With 15 games left to play, Newcastle United have plenty of time to turn their season around and push themselves back above the likes of Arsenal & Blackburn Rovers but it'll come through hard work both on and off the pitch starting with the Newcastle United squad.
The Newcastle United squad was immediately listed for sale, every player apart from goalkeeper & captain T_Strakosha and 19 year old striker K_Moore, both who cannot leave the club until the end of the season.
Banks is said to be looking to reduce the age of the starting 11 with funds being made available to him by the club.
Here's what the new Newcastle United caretaker manager had to say on his appointment, his plans for the club and it's immediate future:
"It's a great privilege to be given this opportunity to help such a great club that is Newcastle United.
I recall from my West Bromwich Albion days, Newcastle United were always finishing high up in the league table and going on cup runs but something has happened since then. A string of poor managers took this once great club to a dark dark place and my predecessor Chris Banks started the journey of bringing this great club back to where it belongs.
Unfortunately he's taken the decision to leave the club with an immediate effect and the board of directors have turned to myself and my coaching staff to steady the ship in an attempt to attract a new, permanent, manager.
We have a lot of work to do here at St James Park and we'll get right on that, for once the playing squad is far too old and we'll need to reduce that in order to play the kind of football that I want to play. The answers won't be there immediately but we'll work hard at finding them and eventually we will do just that.
As for goals for the rest of the season in terms of results, we have to gain Champions League qualification and in order to do this, we have to chase down those 4 or 5 teams above us and this starts against Everton tomorrow. A strong start and then we'll go from there, hopefully boosted by some strong transfer activity.
For now, this is all I can say on the matter."
