Thacker: Today we reached one of our season goals, Last season we couldn’t get past the second round of any cup, but by beating Lille today we gotten past that barrier. Four different players scored and Atubolu put up another clean sheet! His form has improved since the start of the season, as have many of our players. This club is starting to pick up some momentum and I think all of our goals are within reach. At this point last season we had 17 points. We’re 2 wins ahead of that pace, and our best football is ahead of us.
Reporter 1: What caused the improvement?
Thacker: We have a better lineup. Once Pasnik settled in, he started scoring and that’s gotten a few extra wins so far. All of our starters are back, they’re chemistry is improved and their skills have been improved. The scouting has improved, we have a much better idea of what our opponents will try against us and that has kept us much more competitive. We really haven’t been embarrassed like we were several times last season. Just look at the Goal Differential! We were close to minus 12 at this round last season, we are now at minus one. We’re the mid-table team that you don’t want to play, because it’s going to be a battle to the end.
Reporter 2: The lineup was set for until the last rounds, why the change?
Thacker: I don’t want to be completely predictable and we have some lads that need some appearances so they can keep helping out the club. I don’t foresee making wholesale changes, but we will not be completely static.
Reporter 3: Salzburg has been silent in the transfer market and have sent no bids to the auction. Why? Don’t you want to get better?
Thacker: Ah, the magic bullet theory again. Our directors are in my opinion, very smart people. They are not tempted to drain the balance sheet to bring in one player. You’ve seen the transactions and you know what other clubs are asking for players. We’re not doing it. We’re putting a good football on the pitch and our academy lads are getting better every day. There will be time when we are buying and selling, but not in the near future.
Reporter 4: You have two strong players in your Academy that may play next season, do think they will be brought up
Thacker: I would be astonished if we promoted anyone next season. Should I pull Given up to be a backup and have him sit? Is Ruiz ready to come in, or would another season or two make him even sharper? I think they’re better at the Academy, at least for next season.
Reporter: At the start of the season, one of your goals was to beat Leipzig, which you have. How does it feel to meet that goal.
Thacker: We only beat them once. Now we need to sweep them. I think we are in a much better place than last season, but this club is not satisfied. We’re only 4 points from the playoffs McGregor, our captain, asks the club every training session. “Why not us?” I ask the same question.
Thank you for your time.
