    Feyenoord News:

Feyenoord organised a press conference at De Kuip to announce that they have offered a caretaker manager position to Wolves incumbent manager Ray Wallace on a temporary game by game basis until such time as a permanent manager can be sought. The club was thrown into a state of chaos with the surprising resignation of former manager Travis Buck who had done such a good job with the club steering them into EFL1. The club chairman said of Buck “He gave us stability when we most needed it, and we can’t thank him enough for all the work and effort he put into this club. His achievement in getting us into EFL1 was astonishing for a small club like this. It is just a shame that he fell out of love with the game and felt he had to leave. We wish him well and hope he makes a return in some form or another.”

On the subject of their new caretaker manager the chair said “Our resources here are quite limited and certainly not to the extent of the clubs around us, so we have no expectations that anyone can pull up any trees here. However, Ray has had some success in the past in a caretaker role at this level keeping sides up and even winning a trophy many seasons ago with our arch rivals in Amsterdam, Ajax. We won’t hold that against him though and hope he can get us back on track after a difficult week or two.”

Catching up with Ray Wallace after the announcement he said “I am looking forward to getting to know the players here, although I already know our top midfielders Melendo, Quinten Timber and main striker Pedro Goncalves from their days at Wolves. I’m hoping they bear no grudges for my transferring them to Feyenoord haha. Although to be fair they are in EFL1 and Wolves are now back down in the Championship so maybe I did them a favour at Wolves expense!!”

    Transfer News:

In breaking transfer news it seems that the new caretaker manager has acted already to bolster the rather weak looking midfield. In comes 28 year old attacking midfielder Arthur from rivals Monaco and going in the opposite direction is 28 year old Moroccan striker Oussama Idrissi. Feyenoord had to add some cash to the deal to bring in the highly rated Brazillian, but he will certainly help the existing midfield of Spaniard Melendo and club captain Quinten Timber from the Netherlands. Ray Wallace said of the deal “Arthur is just the player we needed to give us a bit of stability and strength in the middle of the park. He is a very good player who will only get better once he strikes up and understanding with his new team mates. Yes we’ve had to give up a decent back up striker in Oussama, but we really aren’t going to be playing with two up top at this level and with our limited resources so it was a no brainer really.”

Since the fully expected relegation from EFL1, the club has been very busy getting everything back on track and set up for a competitive season in EFL2. The first and most important step was confirming Ray Wallace to continue as the caretaker manager. With this achieved it was now as case of setting the club up to meet the challenges of playing in the second tier and putting plans in place for the future of the club.

The first stage in improving this club is the expansion of the ground De Kuip, which is to be expanded from its current capacity of 50k to 60k at a cost of £18m. All going well this planned to be improved upon season on season to keep the club competitive and provide the best environment and surroundings possible for both the players and supporters.

The senior squad has seen an awful lot of change as several players have been released to achieve a better balanced squad going forward. It was always felt that there were far too many very samey midfielders at the club requiring substantial playing time that diluted the effectiveness of the first team and this negative has now been addressed. Josh Koroma, a 26 year old English midfielder, has left the club for an £11m fee to join Paris St Germain. Midfielders Erick Guitierrez (30 years old from Mexico), Elif Elmas (25 years old from Macedonia) and Sebastian Szymanski (a Polish 26 year old) have all been released. It is anticipated that the club now only need to source a new back up goalkeeper to ensure squad size rules are met.

It has also been announced that 26 year old Kosovan goalkeeper Arijanet Muric has been made club captain for the forthcoming season.

The breaking news is that 23 year old attacking midfielder Alvaro Djalo from Spain has been signed for a fee of £27.5m from Athletic Bilbao after Feyenoord triggered his release clause fee. This signing will have the knock on effect of meaning that 24 year old Dutch midfielder Quinten Timber becomes surplus to requirements and it has been confirmed that he is now on the transfer list.

On the academy front there was a lot of work to do to try to catch other clubs work in this area. Feyenoord start at base level with no previous investment in this area. The first step was to recruit a coach, and it has been recently announced that former Dutch international midfielder Alex Cruyff will join the academy and set the new training schemes in place. New senior coach Alex Cruyff said “This is a massive honour for me to come here at the beginning of this great project. I am very confident of the future of this and can’t wait to get started implementing my ideas.” Following on from this a scout has also been appointed with the task of searching out and signing new youth players. With this in mind it is expected that two new youth players will join the Feyenoord Academy in the next few weeks. The only details released at this stage is that one is a defender and the other a defensive midfielder. These two will join the existing academy squad that comprises of goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, defender Luigi Vitale, midfielder Steffen Hofmann and striker Bojan. As expected and reported elsewhere, Brazilian defender Miranda, Dutch midfielder Stijn Schaars and Australian striker Scott McDonald will all join the senior squad after their one season stint in the academy.
