    Wolves Academy

This week saw the first press conference held by new youth academy coach ex Argentinian international Rafael Baptista who joins the club’s staff with a remit to get the youth academy back on track after what was a chaotic inaugural season.

First up he was asked what he thought of the existing players in the youth setup?
To say they had a bit of a torrid time of it previously is an understatement, so I’m impressed to say that this set of young players are still very keen to learn and develop. They all see that carrot of maybe joining the first team squad and one day becoming a starter. All of them want to make the most of their footballing opportunities.

Secondly, he was asked on how his approach will be different to last season?
Unfortunately, there was no real structure to the previous weekly training routines and consequently the players suffered and didn’t develop as they or the club would have liked. Going forward I fully intend to get things onto a more professional basis and tailor what we are doing to benefit each individual player rather than have a “one size fits all” approach. I also intend to get these youngsters in for far more sessions than they were used to previously. They need to get used to a more intensive regime that more mimic’s the first team squad’s training and preparations.

Are their any players that you feel will make that step up?
It would be very unfair of me to pick out any individual over the rest, especially at this very early stage in my assessments of them. They all have potential in their preferred positions, but it is going to be down to each one of them to make the very most of the coaching we give them. Certainly, my understanding is that potentially three of these young players may be elevated to the first team squad come the end of this upcoming season to cover for the three retiring players. I will be ensuring that if any of them are fortunate enough to be promoted to the senior squad then they are ready to fulfil that role. But it remains to be seen whether that will be the case or not or whether the cub decides instead to enter the transfer market to fill those squad slots.

What do you make of the two new players that have joined the academy?
As you might imagine it’s a bit early to tell, but they both come with glowing reports from our scouting team so I’m confident they can fit in here and develop as we’d like.

Are there plans for the future of the academy?
Well, very early days from my point of view as I’ve only just arrived. But, in the meetings I’ve had so far I’ve expressed a preference to extend the coaching staff in the future so that we can be even more intensive but also be able to provide more individual skills training based on positions as well as general play development.

Have you anyone specific in mind to join your coaching setup here?
If I do get the option in the future to extend the coaching staff here, then I have a few names in mind that both myself and the manager have worked with in the past. Any of which would make a huge contribution to the development of these young players.

Lastly, he was asked why he plumped for the Wolves academy in particular?
As you know I was a player for a long time with the likes of Aero Galaxy, Dynamo Spartak, Lokomotiv Spartak amongst others and spent most of my playing years in those teams managed by Ray Wallace so there was no hesitation on my part to accept the offer of this role when it came along. We’ve always had a great player/manager relationship over the years with plenty of the usual highs and lows along the way so it’s great to team up again and help to forge the future of this club. Whilst I was a player the manager encouraged a few of us to take our coaching badges and now I’ve retired from playing, here I am to start a new chapter in my footballing career.

    Wolves Academy

Well, I thought I’d do a basic little run down of the effectiveness so far of the Academy here at Wolves. Might be of interest to those who have built up their own academies to compare and contrast against and might even tempt those who didn’t dip their toes into the water of training younglings to maybe have a go next season.

Just for information we went for the full monty of Scout (one new player per season for the next five seasons), Coach (an extra five training weeks for the next three seasons) and drafted in an extra player which gave us two extra players in total courtesy of the scout. We also plan to bring in an additional coach for next season to really bolster our training gains going forward.

After four weeks of intensive training, it has been a bit of a mixed bag of results across the youngsters. Keeper Sorrentino has by far improved the most, as you might expect considering he only has the one stat to improve upon. Of the outfield players, 19 year old midfielder Wilshere, 18 year old fellow midfielder Conti and 19 year old striker Bellucci look to be progressing the best so far. Whereas new intake Vieira is struggling a bit to make much improvement on his main stat.

    Total Increases:
    S_Sorrentino 307 mains
    P_Maldini 176 mains 107 seconds 43 thirds
    T_Silva 184 mains 86 seconds 74 thirds
    F_Stoor 165 mains 78 seconds 49 thirds
    P_Vieira 132 mains 96 seconds 70 thirds
    D_Conti 194 mains 127 seconds 59 thirds
    J_Wilshere 217 mains 90 seconds 55 thirds
    Z_Ibrahimovic 160 mains 88 seconds 50 thirds
    C_Bellucci 215 mains 101 seconds 73 thirds

As can be seen in the table above the best seconds are equating with the worst mains increases and the best thirds seem to be showing in line with the worst seconds increases.

Early days in the training season yet, but definitely an improvement on last season’s woeful results.

We are just dreading the mid season event. Last season we had a pretty bad negative, so fingers crossed this season sees a positive for one of my young brood. Almost wish we could drop out of the mid season event

I just thought I’d share a little insight into what you can expect from the training regime if you wish to invest in it. I’ll just take the two latest 17 year old youngsters to join the Wolves Academy, namely Paulo Maldini and Patrick Viera and show just how much they have gained over the season, which includes an extra 5 weeks training due to our investment in a coach last season.

These two lads joined us with these stats:
      P_Maldini 17 ita 1 17 15 6 30 1 242 808 274
      P_Vieira 17 fra 1 15 17 3 27 1 383 173 394

They finished this season’s training with these stats:

      P_Maldini 17 ita 1 18 16 6 30 1 523 454 591
      P_Vieira 17 fra 1 16 18 3 27 1 35 325 835

Overall defender Maldini has improved by 1,281 Tk abs, 646 Ps abs and 317 Sh abs

Defensive midfielder Viera has improved by 1,152 Ps abs, 652 TK abs and 441 Sh abs

I would suggest that this is generally in line with a player playing most, if not all game time, in the senior squad. A luxury that most of us could not afford to or maybe not want to give for such low rated players.

At this rate of improvement and if this trend persists then I could foreseeably see these players looking like this when they have to be promoted at age 22 basically four seasons away and based on the fact that I will have two coaches going forward giving us an extra 10 weeks of training each season:

      P_Maldini 22 ita 1 23 19 7 30 1 903 167 922
      P_Vieira 22 fra 1 18 23 5 27 1 773 163 687

Whether this would still leave this pair on the fringes of a senior squad warming the bench most of the time or whether they could actually become useful first teamers is open to conjecture as the skills map also moves ever forward each season?

I know it’s a very small guide sample but just food for thought for those who may be considering dipping their toes into the world of the academies.

        Wolves Academy News

It has been confirmed today by Wolverhampton Wanderers that 19, almost 20 year old English attacking midfielder Jack Wilshere will indeed be promoted from the Academy this close season. However, in a twist to the previous plans outlined by the club, a loan offer for the youngster that guarantees full playing time has been received from Red Bull Leipzig and now duly considered by the club’s hierarchy. So, rather than make up numbers as potentially a peripheral figure in the Wolves senior squad a decision has been made to accept the offer and allow him to go out on loan to the EFL2 where he can get much needed playing experience under his belt. It is thought that the presence of Millwall manager Gary Windebank at the helm of the German club as a caretaker was a key component in the decision considering that Thiago Silva already has a similar deal in place for next season as he joins Millwall on loan for next season and possibly the season after.

The only potential kink in this agreement is if Red Bull Leipzig find themselves a new permanent manager who isn’t quite as keen on this deal as the current caretaker is. On that point senior Academy coach Rafael Baptista said “It’s not a problem, if we find ourselves facing the question of reduced playing time for Jack due to management changes at Leipzig, then we shall just recall him and fully incorporate him into the senior side here. The main thing is that Jack gets the playing time he needs to further his already excellent development.”

The only downside of this decision is that it will mean that Wolves will need to find an extra player from somewhere to enable the first team to meet the stringent league criteria on squad numbers.
