Its probably gone under the radar in the mad FFO world, but Union Berlin have appointed the experienced Andy Babbs as their head coach. The move which suprised many took place a few weeks ago, and the Englishman has wasted little time in making his presence felt in Germany. We caught up with him this week and asked him a few questions.

Hi Andy, I suppose the first question has to be why move from Chelsea to Berlin.

AB, Why not Id say. I was not enjoying Chelsea at all, and was getting stale, so much so I thought of leaving the game altogether. Ive taken a job which has come as a shock to many, but I see a very good long term plan in place in Germany that Im happy with.

Reporter, Ive heard youve hit the ground running, so tell us what youve been up too.

AB, Well the squad is simply not good enough at all, even though they finished one place outside the play-offs last season. The experienced L_Bonucci has moved to Roma in a reported 8.5m deal from Berlin. This move has helped free up 1m in wages per month which Berlin can not afford at all in the long term. Ive since sanctioned a 10k expansion of the Berlin home ground, which will take the capacity up from 35k to 45k.This will inflate revenue, and provide extra monies for wages and transfers in the future .In addition Ive sold the striker Becker to Racing Club Lens, and in exchange welcomed the younger forward French man A_Fulgini, who is younger and again a saving on wages. Defender 19yrs old W_ArmItage has now joined us as a direct replacement for Bonucci and is an exiting youngster that this club will now foster and develop in the seasons to come. Next to come in is a very good young attacking midfielder E_Nuamah from Lyon who Im particulary pleased to welcome to the club. Mean while German player R_Khedira has joined Premier league side Liverpool for an un-disclosed fee. Other transfers are planned and several players are available for the right offers.

Reporter, Youve certainly been busy, and seem to be balancing the books but at the same time signing youth players.

AB, Yes thats about right. Ive also arranged for extra close season training with the employment of an additional coach for the next three close seasons, starting from now. It doesnt stop there either, we have a employed a specialist scout who will travel the world in search of players for Union Berlin .He will be employed for the next five seasons, and Im informed that we have already have an exiting talent identified, who will join our Academy in the very near future. In addition to this we have a further two youngsters joining our academy as well, probably a defender and attacking midfielder. This will make our new academy up to ten players which will progress into the first team hopefully in the not to distant future. Well thats the idea anyway.

Reporter, Wow great news, for Berlin fans. What about promotion.

AB, At this stage not interested at all to be honest. This club is not ready for Promotion yet but we will be in the future.

Reporter, Not sure Berlin fans want to hear that

AB, Thats the future for this club, youth Academy, youth players and balancing the books, its the only way. Its a challenge and will take a few seasons to start to see real progress, But we will get there.

Reporter, Any news in FFO world we maybe interested in AB.

AB, The transfer markets gone mad, and theres an auction coming, which I cant see Berlin taking part in Im afraid. I think the smaller clubs should be made a more attractive Prospect maybe by making their academy players at least the equal to the higher clubs, which is not the case at present. If you dont do something Managers will not migrate over, its as simple as that.

Reporter, Thanks AB and good luck at Berlin.

    AB, Thanks, no problem.

With the finance part of the game being so important ,especially for the smaller clubs, we take a look at the Cup fortunes so far this season for Union Berlin.

    EFL Cup round 1

    Union Berlin 2 - 0 Lens

The first round of the EFL Cup saw Berlin drawn against a fellow EFL league club in Lens. A tough game looked to be on the cards, and so it turned out to be with top Scorer Fofana and Tousart the scorers, both in the first half of this game to give the hosts a First round win by 2-0.It was a deserved win for Berlin, which certainly helped the bank balance as the home side moved into the EFL second round.

    EFL round 2

    Union Berlin 2-0 Sparta Prague

The second draw was kind to the Germans again, as they were pitched against Sparta Prague at home. Again we ran out 2-0 winners, and again we deserved the win. The owners were jumping for joy as they raked the cash in again with this win, and of course hoped for another kind draw for the up-coming third round. Little did they know things were about to change. The third round draw has now been made and Union Berlin will visit Roma of Italy for the right to a place in the quarter finals of the EFL Trophy. We await the outcome of this encounter but its a major test for the German Minnows.

    DBC Cup Group game 1

    Eintracht Frankfurt 0-0 Union Berlin

Having earned the right to play in the DBC Cup by virtue of their 7th place finish in the EFL 2 league last season .Berlin find themselves in group C with Eintracht Frankfurt ,Leicester City and Everton .A tough group indeed for our heros but quite possible for them to qualify from to the Quarter finals, we will see. The game as the final score suggests was a tight a one ,and a 0-0 draw was about right in the end With another five games to come at least in the competition the money keeps rolling in for Berlin.

      EFL2 Round 1

      Shakhtar Donetsk 2 - 4 Union Berlin

A cracking start for our boys in the new EFL2 league. Away at Shakhtar Donetsk is no easy fixture, so I was pleased with this 3pts to start the ball rolling. With goals from W_ArmItage (6), D_Fofana (41 pen,48), and A_Theate (89) doing the business it was a deserved win. Im under no illusions however as to the task facing Berlin, but I will go on record again to say, Im not to concerned about our league position this season or in the near future. This club is being prepared for the future long term, not short term.

      EFL Round 2

      Union Berlin 0 - 6 Benfica

Not to much to say about this match as were clobbered, and deserved nothing from the match at all. A reminder of the size of the mountain were are attempting to climb Im afraid. Goals from P_Schick (14,42), C_Tengstedt (15,27), A_Oroz (17,33) Smashed the Germans .No complaints from me. We move on.

      EFL Round 3

      Rennes 1 - 0 Union Berlin

Next up a 0-1 defeat to Rennes, and very much un-deserved I have to say. We deserved something from this game, but as often happens when you struggle the luck doesnt run for you at all. We fell to a second minute goal from Mane and try as we might we couldnt get back on level terms. Unlucky we move on again.

        EFL Round 4

        PSV 1 - 2 Union Berlin

Round 4 took our heros to The Philips Stadion to face the great PSV side. Thanks to two first half goals from ArmItage (18), and A_Fulgini (23) I can report three very important points on the road for Berlin. That win pushed us up the league a little, but again head coach Andy Babbs insists his team will not be bothered if this season doesnt bring a promotion for the Germans.

        EFL Round 5

        Union Berlin 0 - 1 Marseille

Round 5 brought a very strong Marseille to Germany, fresh from relegation from the Premier division in Europe, a real test for Union Berlin. Didnt expect much from this match however a spirited display from Union very nearly produced a point, but in the end a 0-1 defeat thanks to a 63 min goal from man of the match S_Castillejo was enough for the points to travel back to France with Marseille.

        EFL Round 6

        FC Porto 3 - 1 Union Berlin

Round 6 brought another fresh relegated side from the Premier Division FC Porto in Berlins line of fire. We were not good enough, as the gulf between the two sides was there to see for all. The 3-1 defeat was about right, as Union were second best all match so no complaints. Down the league we go as the size of the rebuild is staring Babbs in the face now.

        EFL Round 7

        Union Berlin 2 - 1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Round 7 Brought fellow German side Eintracht Frankfurt to Berlin and a chance to perhaps win a few points for our heros. As it turned out we grabbed a nice victory thanks to D_Leite (18), D_Fofana (59 pen) and despite a lone strike from French man D_Ozoh (43) it wasnt enough though and 3 very important points were ours.

        EFLRound 8

        Atalanta 3 - 1 Union Berlin

Round 8 and we travelled to Italy to Face Italian side Atalanta. Again we faced a quality side and struggled, although we had the lions share of the possession, the out come was predictable a 3-1 loss.

        EFL Round 9

        Union Berlin 2 - 2 Lens

Round 9 brought Lens to Berlin, with a realistic chance of a few points coming our way . We raced into a 2-0 lead in the first few minutes ,however a nasty injury to Hradecky in the 47th minute caused the Germans immense problems ,and enabled the vistors to draw level ,and claim a very un-deserved 2-2 draw.

        EFLCup Round 3

        Roma 6 - 1 Union Berlin

The last sixteen of the EFL Cup, saw Berlin travel to Italy and face the Italian Giants Roma, a side who have every chance of winning this competition. Berlin were of cause without first team goalkeeper Hradecky which had a serious impact on the end result. Too face a side like Roma just reminds us all the size of the task to get into the Premier division, and then to survive there. Even though was lost 6-1 we never gave up and took the game to Roma all match which pleased me. My own opinion is that the lower teams will have a very difficult time in developing youngsters who will make the grade, and something needs to be done so the prospect of taking a side on in the lower divisions is attractive to all managers. If this is not done Managers will leave its that simple. Time and effort needs to have its rewards.

          EFL2 Round 10

          Schalke 1 - 3 Union Berlin

EFL2 Round 10 took our Heros to Schalke a tough game to follow no doubt. Not as far as Berlin were concerned as they breezed passed their fellow German side 1-3, thanks to high scoring defender W_ArmItage and a brace from top scorer Fofana. This score really had the travelling Union Berlin fans rocking and the three [points were ours.

          EFL2 Round 11

          Union Berlin 2 - 1 Ajax

Next up Ajax, were the visitors to Berlin ,and what a big powerful side they were, so much stronger than Berlin, but yet again they were matched and beaten by Union Berlin. A marked improvement from the German side, and one which was to continue in the league at least. With Fofana in the side Berlin will always have a chance to score goals, question is how long can we keep him.

          EFL2 Round 12

          Lyon 0 Union Berlin 0

A useful point in France for Berlin as several youngsters and fringe players were given their minutes by AB. A fair result in my opinion as our good form in the league continues. A trip to face RB Salzburg looms in Round 13 and another tough encounter no doubt

          DBC Cup Round 3

A group C match in round 3 of the DBC Cup next as Union Berlin Entertained Premier league side Everton. A tough encounter for the Germans which saw us match Everton, and with a little luck they could of secured an unlikely victory. A 2-2 draw was the result, and what a game it was with goals from that man Fofana, and his strike partner Fulgini giving us a precious point in Group C. It will be certainly a tough ask now to qualify, as we face Everton in the reverse fixture next, without the injured Kral.

          Note from the Boss,

The Academy continues to prosper, and Ive no doubt in the the future we will have the odd gem to boast out first team ranks at Berlin. That said, FFO needs to gets its act together and make sure the lesser teams are blessed with a realistic opportunity to make these stars, be rewarded for their efforts ,and not be cannon fodder for the so called bigger clubs. The academy players at the bigger clubs are better, with higher quality players coming through. I say again enhance the players at lower league clubs, and give us a chance to at least close the gap with top flight clubs and not continue to fall behind them. If this doesnt happen Managers will not take on the lower league sides , they will be for the odd few managers to have a go, and when they become vacant, a toy for the so called top managers. Yes top sides generally do have better facilities, but the idea here is to enhance the lower clubs, and I do not see this happening quickly enough. Just my thoughts of course, but I fear nothing will happen. And yes my idea to move from Chelsea and I dont regret that, but give us a chance.

            EFL2 Round 13

            RB Salzburg 0 - 0 Union Berlin

A tough won point against Salzburg was won by our boys, as they took a battering but stood firm. An under strength side for Berlin did the Manager proud as the fringe players stuck to their guns well. Not pretty at all, but very effective said AB after the match to Berlin News. With the halfway point coming ever closer in this fast paced season, our boys remain in contention at the right end of the league.

            EFL Round 14

            Union Berlin 0 - 0 Villarreal

Again the same result as Berlin took on the much stronger Villarreal side in Germany. The stats will tell you we deserved more out of the game, but Its goals that win matches. Berlin can take pride from holding a top positioned side in this league to a draw, and taking a valuable point. We move onto Round 15 and all of the reserves have achieved their minutes and will remain at the club next season.

            DBC Round 4

            Everton 0 - 1 Union Berlin

Berlin are bang into contention in Group C of the Darren Bradwell Cup, with this cracking win against the Premier League side. Berlin can well do with the money from this competition so the next matches which are both at home are so important. Probably the best win of Berlins season so far,and comes hot on the heels of their last 16 Position in the EFL Cup as well.

Union Berlin today issued a club Statement out-lining the clubs intentions for next few seasons, and their opinions on the current Academy set ups.

Union Berlin will continue to support their Manager Andy Babbs, as he attempts to plot the clubs on field future. Union Berlin have a sound Financial base to work on for the first time in many years. This is in no small part down to the efforts of the Manager and his team. We boast one of the smallest wage bills in the whole of the FFO world, and this we know, will continue with our present Management team. The ground capacity has been extended and there are plans for a further extension at the end of the present season as well. In addition to this the Academy is thriving with the addition of further coaches, and young players arriving from around the world, coming to Union Berlin. Our academy will become one of the better academies around, and the benefits will be seen in the next few years.

We will not be entering many if any auctions for players in the foreseeable future, as the prices quoted are well out of our range, and are in our opinion geared to the top level clubs not the Union Berlins of this world. Also we would like to see a level base in the academy world ,as the youngsters joining the bigger clubs are of a higher standard than the lower clubs in many cases, how is this fair ? Weve heard the counter argument about better youngsters joining better clubs, but we would say bigger clubs often rely on taking players from lower clubs, and develop them on, and of course purchasing players from lower league sides at a lower price, yes it goes on. Berlin will have their day, as we remain focused on the here and now and the future of course. On the positive side we welcome the academies but they need to improve for lower leagues sides.

                EFL Round 15

                RB Leipzig 1 - 0 Union Berlin

Our Heros faced a 0-1 loss in round 15 of the EFL League 2 clash with Leipzig. Again we faced a much stronger side and paid the price with this defeat on the road. Despite putting out a strong side we were simply not good enough on the day. On to the next round.

                EFL Round 16

                Union Berlin 2 - 2 Real Betis

Next up one of the strongest sides in the EFL2 Real Betis came to Berlin and took a 0-2 lead with goals from S_Benrahma (13), J_Bruma (49). Berlin then made a great come back, and Ive got to say Im proud of them, striking back with goals from L_Tousart (51), A_Fulgini (75) forcing a 2-2 draw, and gaining a valuable draw at the close of play.

                EFL Round 17

                Valencia 0 - 2 Union Berlin

Next up a visit to my old stomping ground Mestella the home of Valencia, still a force to be reckoning with at this level, but a shadow of their former self its got to be said. Berlin showed Valencia respect but also took their chances when they came along, running out 0-2 winners a great result.

                EFL Round 18

                Union Berlin 2 - 1 Sparta Prague

Sparta visited Berlin next and provided a stern test for out boys. Berlin again proved their grit and ground out worthy 2-1 win and three excellent points.

                EFL Round 19

                Real Sociedad 5 - 0 Union Berlin

Next a 5-0 humiliation for Berlin and a deserved 5-0 loss. The less said about this game the better, perhaps one eye on the important DBC Cup on the horizon.

                EFL Round 20

                Union Berlin 0 - 1 Shakhtar Donetsk

Another poor result for our boys as they slipped to a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Shakhtar, again a stronger side than us, but a worrying downward slide has begun.

                  DBC Cup Group game 5

                  Union Berlin 2 - 1 Leicester City

A fantastic result against Premiership side Leicester City. This result actually gives our boys a realistic chance of qualifying from the group stages, and playing in a two legged quarter final, who knows. Goals from E_Nuamah (60), and a 94th minute D_Fofana (92 pen) caused the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei to rock and sent the fans home dreaming.

                  DBC Group game 6

                  Union Berlin 1 - 0 Eintracht Frankfurt

Well the day came, and Berlin delivered with a 1-0 win against Eintracht Frankfurt, what a day for the club. As the final whistle went the ground erupted, and players were carried around the ground as their heros. Not only have they qualified for a two legged quarter final matches against Middlesborough, they won Group C and rightfully claimed their place the last eight of the DBC Cup. Outstanding performance for the German club, and two great matches to look for too, which starts with a first leg against Borough at the riverside next Wednesday night. Of course theres the financial rewards as well, so the club owners are well chuffed. Berlin are punching above their weight as always but you never know what will happen with this side. Cant wait, bring them on, because they will not want to face us.

                    EFL Round 21

                    Benfica 2 - 3 Union Berlin

Berlin travelled to Portugal in round 21 of their EFL2 Season to face Benfica. With one eye on the first leg of their Quarter final DBC clash with Middlesborough, Berlin fielded a fringe squad first eleven for this match. As it turned out the game was an umdinger of a game with Berlin racing into a 0-3 lead before Benfica scored twice to set up a very nervy last few minutes. But our boys put their backs to the wall and held on for a vital 3pits and a 2-3 win.

                    EFL Round 22

                    Union Berlin 1 - 2 Rennes

Round 22 proved yet again that Berlin certainly know how to keep fans on their toes, as their topsy turvy season carried on as they lost to French side Rennes 1-2. A disappointing game for the Germans and does little to convince the German fans that AB knows what he is doing.

                    EFL Round 23

                    Union Berlin 1 - 3 PSV

Berlin suffered another defeat at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei, this time at the hands of Dutch side PSV. Boos rang around the ground as Berlin left the field, as their season continues to slide. Berlin offered very little in this game, and can have no complaints about the result at all. The Dutch were quicker to the ball all night ,and Berlin rarely troubled the Dutch goal except for a consulation goal from D_Leite on 38 mins. Things need to improve and quickly.

                    ELF Round 24

                    Marseille 0 - 1 Union Berlin

Things look up in Round 24 as Berlin claim a 0-1 win in France against top six side Marseille. A goal from man of the match Armitage was enough on the night which gave Berlin the points and ease their recent slump in EFL League 2. A much needed 3pts which sent the travelling Germans fans home very happy indeed.

DBC Quarter Final Match First Leg.

                      Middlesbrough 1 - 0 Union Berlin

Berlins big day arrived as they faced Middlesbrough at the Riverside. Middlesborough are a much stronger side than Berlin and the vistors found this out, as they were out muscled and didnt really make any impression on the hosts throughout the match. The travelling German fans were clearly disappointed at the final whistle but AB was keen to point out at the end of the match this was in fact half-time, and Berlin were still very much in the match. Still the game ended 1-0 to the hosts ,and Berlin went back home with their tails between their legs.

DBC Quarter Final Match Second leg.

                      Union Berlin 5 - 0 Middlesbrough

Outstanding performance from Berlin and a very well deserved 5-0 win, against a stronger side in Middlesborough. Two goals each for Forfana and Fulgini, backed up by a goal for Tousart caped the night perfectly for the German side. A two legged Semi final tie awaits our heros against Cardiff and everyone is daring to dream.

                        EFL Round 25

                        Union Berlin 2 - 0 FC Porto

Round 25 saw high flying Porto visit Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. As is normal this season Union Berlin played well against higher quality opponents ,running out a worthy 2-0 winners. Its been said that AB is not that bothered about promotion this season, prefering to build for the future instead, but theres no doubt Berlin have the quality to finish well up the league, and maybe in the play-offs, question is do they want too.

                        EFL Round 26

                        Eintracht Frankfurt 0 - 5 Union Berlin

Round 26 saw our boys on the road again this time in Germany and the stadium of Eintracht Frankfurt ,Deutsche Bank Park. Again Berlin played out of their skins and gained a fantastic 5-0 win. A hatrick for top scorer for D_Fofana (2,27,59), topped up with goals from A_Fulgini (39), and M_Kilman (49) doing the business. Still on the out skirts of the play-offs but certainly in with a chance of making a late season push for glory.

                        EFL Round 27

                        Union Berlin 2 - 2 Atalanta

Next up one of the four teams left in the DBC Cup, Italian outfit Atalanta came to town. Recovering from being 2-0 down in this match Union Berlin clawed their way back into this match snatching a 2-2 each draw. Seven points from nine in their last three matches saw Union Berlin climb the table and be within touching distance of the play-off positions again.

                        EFL Round 28

                        Lens 1 - 0 Union Berlin

Round 28 saw the real Union Berlin side again as they fell to 1-0 defeat in France. This is the exact issue that AB needs to put right if Berlin are to make a serious run for Promotion. Truth of the matter is that Berlin are miles away from the mark when it comes to EFL1 and AB knows it. You never know what Union Berlin will turn up, the unpredictable league side or the swash buckling Cup side.

                        EFL Round 29

                        Union Berlin 0 - 1 Schalke

We needed no further proof of the topsy turvy form of Berlin, and yet here we go again in Round 29 at the Stadion An der Alten Forsterei. Our heros lost to bottom side Schalke 0-1, and a deserved loss as well. With a first leg semi final Cup game on the horizon against Premier league Club Cardiff City, things look grim to say the least. Some harsh words needed for sure and Im sure AB would tell the players exactly what his feelings were after this match.

                        EFL Round 30

                        Ajax 0 - 0 Union Berlin

Next on paper what looks like a decent point on the road in Holland, a bore draw would best describe it and certainly nothing that would worry the Cardiff City scouts that were watching in the stands. Not much to be said about this game but a points a point I suppose.

A great night in Berlin as Union walked out in front of a capacity 45k home crowd, to face Premiership Cardiff City in the semi final first leg of the Darren Bradwell Cup. Fans sang their heats out for Berlin, as they had never seen a match like this in their history before. The whole of Berlin City had been on high alert all week and ment to enjoy themselves whilst praying for the win. Well win they did, and what a win it was, as they take a 4-1 win to Wales for the second leg in a weeks time. Goals from A_Fulgini (11), D_Fofana (27), A_Kral (51), A_Theate (65) doing the business as the players were carried off the pitch by the home fans.

                            EFL Round 31

                            Union Berlin 0 - 0 Lyon

French side Lyon visited Stadion An der Alten Forsterei in round 31 of the EFL 2 season. Lyon like Berlin have been in erratic form this season, but again like Berlin that suits the long term plan. A no goal bore was in store for the Berlin supporters and that was just about the right result. Although on paper Berlin had the better of the game, the Lyon defence held firm and for once Forfana and Co were kept quite. A mid table position is the likely out come for Union Berlin this season and the club and owners are very happy with that. With one eye on the up coming Cup Final the players are understandably cautious. On a more positive note the academy is coming on nicely, with the additional coaches having a big impact on the graduates. Several youngsters are believed to be improving so much that a promotion to the first team is likely in the near future.

                            EFL Round 32

                            Union Berlin 0 - 1 RB Salzburg

Very poor result at home to RB Salzburg as our boys slipped to a 0-1 defeat. The league season is slipping away from Union Berlin, as they again struggle with their form. Not good enough AB was heard to shout as he left the dugout to sound of the home supporters boos, and that just about sums up the match. With plans to revamp the squad eos you would think the players would be on top form in order to impress the coach, but on this evidence they we not. With plans to again increase the ground capacity, and the employment of another scout, things are begining to happen at Union Berlin. Watch this space, this is just the start.

                            ELF Round 33

                            Villarreal 1 - 1 Union Berlin

Next a visit to Spain and high flyers Villarreal were the hosts. A tough match on paper for Union but again Berlin raised their game when it was needed. This was an improved Berlin make no bones about it and more like the Union Berlin we know and love. A much deserved 1-1 draw and with a bit of luck we could have even won the game.

                            EFL Round 34

                            Union Berlin 1 - 0 RB Leipzig

An amazing win for berlin against a very strong and useful Leipzig side. Max Kilman struck in the 4th for the hosts and thats the way it ended with a very useful 3pts thank you very much. This is the Berlin side that can win matches at this level ,and I can only hope we carry this form on for the remainder of the season and into the Cup final as well.

                              EFL Round 35

                              Real Betis 1 - 2 Union Berlin

Again Berlin show their quality streak with a great win against Betis in Spain. Such a frustrating side Union Berlin, but they showed the better side that its about heart desire and effort in equal measures as well as quality. Im proud of this side because no one wanted them and take it from me its only a matter of time before they grace the top division. The season is coming to an end now, the academy is getting better, the side has improved and theres still more to be done. Nice win.

                              EFL Round 36

                              Union Berlin 2 - 1 Valencia

Time stood still in Berlin as the players entered the arena for this match, AB was projected back in time as his former side Valencia, faced off against his current side Union Berlin. Valencia are of course a shadow of their former self, but still a better and stronger side on paper that Berlin. Of course Berlin didnt read the script and ripped the Spanish apart right from the whistle, gaining a much deserved 2-1 win in the process. Another great win for Berlin as they again close in on the play off spots in League two.
