  • Tales from the sweet shop…

With the start of the season looming the Toffees have taken a huge risk. The issue? No manager, an aging squad and among other issues no money to spend.

What do they do? What direction do they head in? Do they aim for a top manager to help them or do they give someone else a shot that they don’t necessarily deserve.

It seems they’ve plunged for the later, with Mike Bridge seemingly not leaving Edgeley park, he was spotted leaving Everton’s training ground. Having just been spotted, it was no time at all until the papers had the story Bridge had filled the hot seat in a caretaker/interim basis.

The first task to deal with upon accepting the temporary role is to clear out the dead wood. Seemingly, the keepers and defence were checked and deemed ok, with little or no changes required here. The midfield, way too old and imbalanced, then evaluating the strikers, there are just too many.

Bridge wasted no time in contacting as many agents and managers of other teams to move the players no longer required by the club. As shown before he isn’t scared of wielding the axe if he felt the team or club required it. Off the record he spoke with me and made it clear Everton were in a relegation fight last year and to prevent that, a lot of changes were required.

The rumoured changes are as follows:

Sub defender J_Stephens makes way in a swap deal with Luton, with Tyler Edward’s look a like Nathan Patterson heading home to Goodison park. As Stephen’s is better stats wise cash will be coming in to cover that.

The defensive midfielder B_Kamara, who has his best years ahead of him, was a bit of a shock for Bridge to let him go, however a swap with Lazio for H_Aouar. A magnificent AM with the same development path as Kamara but slightly ahead.

The veteran defensive midfielder K_Kampl, seemingly surplus to requirements at his age. Bridge anticipating his legs have gone. Swapping for a squad player and cash.

Veteran attacking midfielder K_Bellarabi, the same as Kampl, surplus to requirements and it looks like Aouar will replace him. Under the same circumstances too, cash in and a squad player.

After an extensive test by Bridge’s coaching staff, M_Dahoud failed the standards test and has been released by mutual consent. The cash from his release has gone on a squad replacement from Juventus.

Now the big moves, V_Gyokeres is waiting for his transfer to be ratified by the league after a cash bid was lodged, believed to be around the 35M pound mark to Betis. Once ratified Bridge will look to replace him with Mowatt from Wolves who will give the team further premier league experience.

G_Moreno was never going to be the player to keep this team up and after a chat about playing time Bridge released him so he could find himself a new team.

Finally and the biggest move so far is, O_Edouard who will be moving in a swap with Saint_Maximin. Edouard stated he couldn’t turn down such a move meaning he gets to play at Old Trafford and play for Manchester United. Whereas Saint_Maximin can be the biggest fish in a much smaller pond, maybe even become a club legend at the toffees! Rumours are rife that there was a bidding war for Saint_Maximin with an unnamed club! Bridge is also rumoured to have not wanting to let Edouard go, a reliable source stating it was Bowen who he first wanted to move on. But, with such a prized player around he had to sacrifice the better player on Edouard to get his man.

With news circulating around the media that Everton were about to appoint a new full time manager, Mike Bridge went into overdrive to sort out the squad for the impending arrival.

As soon as Saint - Maximin had signed for the toffees he was moved on. He moved on in a two for two, him along with new signing Aouar moved in a blockbuster move to Chelsea. But who would be coming from Chelsea to Everton? The answer to that question would be R Mahrez and Correa, both 20 20 attacking midfielders on the verge of 21 21. Brought in to play multiple positions across the front line or in midfield. But would the Toffees fans see them ever play for the team or will Bridge move these on just as fast as they came in?

The answer to that question was available to everyone quicker than people thought.

Correa moved on to Aston Villa, Bridge striking a deal with Villa caretaker manager Banks. With J Alvarez heading to Goodison park. Banks only in the hot seat for a few hours before the deal was struck. Mahrez to date is still in the Everton squad and Bridge seems happy with his acquisition for the new manager, so he seems safe in the team.

J Alvarez though, had an initial trial on arrival and his shooting stat was deemed unacceptable and negotiations started with Barcelona in a swap for Son. There is no hiding Bridge’s admiration for the striker Son having tried signing him before picking up Jack Grealish. After a quick negotiation and cashing in on V Gyokeres, Bridge had his man and he will be wearing Everton blue in the new season. The full deal Son + a squaddie and 20M for J Alvarez and V Gyokeres.

Next up, Bridge listed J Bowen, knowing he needed a strike partner for Son. The cash from Son being offered to improve on Bowen. With a bit of a delay and seeing a few strikers advertised Bridge waited for an offer to come in and out of nowhere Huddersfield Town offered Oyazabal for Bowen and cash. The toffee’s interim boss saw this as a great deal and accepted. The Everton front 3 looking very sweet for the new season.

Unfortunately though Bridge needed some extra cash to cover some of the other deals and K Tierney had to move on in a swap with Tanganga and cash from Lazio.

With all these deals being processed the team looks so much better. Giving the new manager a better shot at more than survival. A big run in the cup and maybe a push for the European spots. The only deal left to be done is a swap for either Zielinski or Mowatt for a defensive midfielder. Interest in D Luiz at Lazio is concrete but a deal is far from being done. There are a few days before the window closes, but the board need to see the bank balance before proceeding on any further deals.

With the squad semi set. Bridge is considering how the team will setup, the formation to use for the best shot of points in this league. It’s a tough league and making De Gea captain was a no brainer. He will need to be covered by 5 decent defenders

        GK D_de_Gea 24 1 1 1 (Captain)
        DF D_Burn 1 21 13 5
        DF S_Savic 1 20 14 10
        DF J_Tanganga 1 20 13 7
        DF Marcao 1 20 12 10
        DF S_Cedric 1 19 14 9
        MF P_Zielinski 1 4 20 17
        MF A_Mowatt 1 2 20 16
        AM R_Mahrez 1 1 20 20
        FW H_M_Son 1 5 15 23
        FW M_Oyarzabal 1 2 16 21

5 2 1 2 seems to be the formation of choice and Son is currently close to 23, but won’t be long to rate up. One of those MFs would be better as a DM and negotiations will continue to sort that and maybe use any cash that is left to upgrade on Cedric.

A separate note must be added for the youth trialist that was given a full time contract A Aourir.

        A_Aourir 19 Ger 1 5 17 13

Average stats but should and more than likely will get development game time this season. He will be good cover across that midfield.

Under the microscope next would be Everton’s youth academy. Bridge took time out of first team training to take a look at the youngsters. Looking for any future gems that stood out. Hoping to hand over as much information as possible to the new manager to help them going forward.

From the training sessions the following players stood out:

          P_Cech 20 1 1 1 25 631 1 1 1
          J_Terry 1 17 11 5 29 1 147 352 470
          A_Bikey 1 16 12 6 28 1 682 887 839
          J_Inamoto 1 13 16 7 28 1 137 574 851
          M_Meghni 1 4 16 12 28 1 8 651 933
          T_Henry 1 5 15 17 25 1 397 103 312
          C_Delgado 1 3 14 16 21 1 888 214 500

Out of the above Bridge noted down and created further dossiers. After he and his scouts run the rule over them they decided to put forward P Cech and T Henry for future first team training. Noting their ability and their attitude making them potential future stars. Although they must stay in the youth setup for at least two years to make sure that this potential can be fulfilled.

With the search for a defensive midfielder still ongoing it seems all of Mike Bridge’s time and effort is going towards his caretaker role.

With Bridge wanting to prove to the FFO top brass that he is capable in the top league of making waves. He is pulling out all of the stops to get Everton to where they need to be. Possibly at the detriment to his full time position Stockport County!

The fans of both clubs seemingly unhappy, the Everton fans voicing their concerns about a manager who won’t be here for the long haul making so many wholesale changes. The the Stockport County fans feeling aggrieved due to the lack of effort towards Bridge’s own team.

Late on Saturday night Mike Bridge made a press conference to douse the flames of concerns from the supporters of both camps. He stated he was putting effort into both sides and doing the best for both clubs. It did little to allay the fears of the fans though. Both agreeing that anyone can do two things at once, but usually the outcome for both tasks usually suffer quality wise. Only time will tell I’m afraid.

Back to the search for a defensive midfielder, the market seems to be drying up now. Some teams waiting for the auction. Some teams blowing their budget on stadium and facility upgrades. So the search will continue right up to the deadline. At that point Mike Bridge maybe just focussing on Stockport and looking on and hoping for the best for Everton from afar.

The question on most people’s mind is with the changes Mike Bridge has made to the first team how will that effect their performances and will it give them a much better finish in the table than previous seasons.

Let’s analyse last season, season 3, Everton finished 16th with 40 points. Losing 16 of their 38 games.

In previous seasons they made 62 points in each of season 1 and 2, they finished 10th and 11th respectively.

Upon further investigation, in each of the seasons they lost 16 times. Which goes to show the drop in quality and not scoring enough turned those wins into draws. We all know drawing too many games is as bad as losing.

The completed deals by Bridge hope to help the team out score the other teams in and around them and below them. Then do whatever they can to pinch points off of the top teams. The jump in class should be more than enough in Bridge’s opinion and making De Gea captain should keep it tight at the back!

Mike Bridge was asked repeatedly tonight after discussing both clubs activities in this end of season about could he be the next Everton manager?

He’s dodged this question a lot since starting the caretaker role, but couldn’t anymore. In a feisty exchange with the media he said he could easily do both roles and compartmentalise each role. He also firmly stated he was NOT the next Everton manager and that any stories saying the contrary were emphatically false. Stockport County were his home team and they would continue to be in heart and there would only be one role he would consider leaving County for.

He was then asked don’t you apply for the Roma job? He stated that this was a mock application and was testing the water to see how his reputation faired in the world of FFO. He then said he rescinded his application before the decision to appoint Hamza and that in his opinion the selection of managers applying weren’t of a high enough calibre to take such a big job.

He confirmed he didn’t think Hamza was right for the job and that he’d done nothing of note in his FFO career apart from constantly going awol and overpromise and under deliver. But it was a difficult decision, but the decision should have been held until EOS.

With the the sun setting on another end of the season, Mike Bridge is looking back on the swift work he has done for his caretaker team.

It’s very strange for him to refer to Everton as ‘his’ caretaker team. Implying a deeper connection than is to be believed by the press. Even after refuting the stories he was to take over at Goodson park permanently.

Upon reflection he’s incredibly proud of the business he’s done. “If someone was to say to me before the start of the season that I’d have managed to improve both strikers, 2/3 midfielders and reduce the age dramatically, I’d have laughed. Are they perfect? No! We had to take a hit in defence to make some of the deals happen. They probably need a few stronger bodies in defence too!”

If you were to carry on for a longer period of time what would the plan be? “There should be enough cash to improve the stadium and even improve the youth setup slightly. We need to wait until the current deals are ratified by the league to re our true bank balance but these small upgrades should help the club building for the future. I would task improving the defence to the new manager! They will be able to put their own stamp on that when they come in!”

Do you know when they are coming in and who they are? “The answer is no to both unfortunately, I’d love to speculate, just to keep you all in the loop. However, I’ll be here for the foreseeable and I’ll do my upmost to get this club back on track!”

So, there you have it! Everton’s May update brought to you all by Swizzels and Haribo. See you all next month for the next tale from the sweet shop!
