With the ‘end of season’ activities well underway, Juventus have been uncharacteristically busy this off season, bringing in new players, developing the stadium and the facilities within the youth academy.
First we’ll start off with the changes in regards to the playing squad.
Juventus had a number of players who they sent out on loan last season, only to recall them for the run in at the end of the season. The first player they sent out to play elsewhere was E_Buendia.
Buendia, signed from Norwich season over a season ago was sent straight back to Carrow Road and then last season saw him lace his boots up for Shakhtar Donetsk under the management of Steven Outten but he failed to impress when recalled back to Italy and manager Andy Banks made it clear that he’d be leaving this pre season.
The hunt for his replacement began and ended when Stockport County’s M_Nakamba was listed for sale for just £20,000,000
With Buendia’s release fee being £12,000,000 Juventus, the Old Lady swooped in to sign Nakamba knowing that they could potentially lose £8,000,000 on the 27 year old Buendia.
Fortunately, Stockport County themselves paid £13,500,000 for the Argentine meaning Juventus only paid £6,500,000 in the end to improve upon a player who will come in handy either at the club or out on loan as rumours have started to swirl that Luton Town could be in for the 32 year old on a season long loan.
Those rumours began when 19 year old Dutch midfielder A_Rais was signed to the club from Dutch team Telstra’s academy.
The youngster has great potential and therefore has bypassed the Juventus academy and has been promoted straight into the first team at the club.
With the arrival of Rais, Nakamba may struggle for game time thus meaning a loan out elsewhere could be what is in the cards at Juventus.
Rais is expected to play sporadically this season and next season until he matures enough to fully asses where his future lays.
Juventus dipped back into the transfer market as they looked to replace the other loanee that the club had last season, defender J_Forlin.
The 35 year old spent last season at Ajax Amsterdam under then manager Matias Finkelstien but since the Argentine moved clubs to Celtic, another loan was out of the question and Juventus instead made plans to use the veteran defender. That was, until J_Bryan hit the transfer market.
The 30 year old was seen as a much younger model of Forlin and for £18,000,000 the deal was done with Millwall. Forlin has now hit the market with price tag of £12,000,000 but the 35 year old is yet to receive any offers and will most likely be released for £10,500,000 prior to the season.
Juventus had addressed their aging backup defender and had dealt with their backup midfielder issue but now, probably their most uncharacteristic move of the transfer window when they listed defender J_Timber for a cash only sale.
The 23 year old arrived at the club at the start of last season in a deal with Bayern Munich but has been out of favour with the manager it seems, with him being 6th choice defender, even behind midfielder E_Camavinga so the decision was made that Timber would be made available for cash.
After offers from West Ham United, Southampton, Arsenal, FC Barcelona and PSG, a ‘buy him now’ fee was placed on Timber at £125,000,000 when the bidding was up to £100,000,000 and that’s where FC Barcelona came knocking.
After a short negotiation, a price of £120,000,000 was agreed between the two clubs but that wasn’t all she wrote.
36 year old veteran defender Jordi_Alba came back the other way in a deal worth £30,000,000 which effectively meant that Juventus had replaced Timber and had been paid £90,000,000 to do this.
Obviously Alba is 13 years the senior of Timber and will retire after 2 seasons but Banks saw an oppand has taken it.
Rumours have it that Arsenal manager Darren Humphries was extremely disappointed that he wasn’t able to bring Timber to Arsenal despite removing the clubs’ bid shortly before the BHN price was set.
The final piece of transfer business at Juventus has seen long time rotation player F_Onyeka be listed for cash sale. The 27 year old’s value is currently set at £8,000,000 with Juventus wanting £10,000,000 to seal the deal that will see a permanent fixture in the team from the last few seasons be moved on.
Away from the player side of the game, work has begun on the Juventus stadium, with 10,000 extra seats being fitted to a new tier in the North stand taking the stadium capacity from 55,000 to 65,000.
This is said to have cost the club £22,000,000 and will take a number of seasons for them to recoup their investment but long term it will be financially beneficial for the club to welcome more and more fans into the stadium.
Juventus’ final piece of off field investment has come in the form of the youth academy. An academy that manager Andy Banks has publicly slated for it’s poor quality but having been informed of league rules stating that there must always be a certain number of players on each clubs’ academy, Banks has struck while the club is rich with cash and welcomed in two new players to the club.
We’re yet to see who the players are but Banks has stated that one is a defender while the second is an attacking midfielder. Each players welcomed into the academy cost the club £12,000,000 so £24,000,000 in total. Will the investment be worth it?
