Fiorentina are deep in preparations for their first season back in the bigtime after winning EF2 last season, so what’s the news?
Manager Kirby declares himself ‘happy’
In a shock turn of events, manager Kirby has declared he is happy to be in EF1 and is looking forward to the season ahead. -
‘Yeah, it’s true I had doubts, I’ve enjoyed managing in the lower leagues and building sides up, and did I really want to face a season of hardship in the top league, particularly against some of the biggest wind-up merchants in the game? not really.’’ Kirby is even quoted as saying he didn’t want to get promoted, and if he did could he move the club to the Premiership!
So, what has brought about this change?
‘’It’s been fun throwing myself into a different challenge with transfers, whereas last season it was all about trying to go younger, whilst maintaining enough quality to challenge, this season it’s all about survival. We’ve had to sacrifice some age to build a squad capable of staying up, and that’s been another good challenge’
So, it’s been a busy pre-season? Any news on who is coming in?
‘’Yes, very busy! I’m reasonably happy with how the squad is shaping up, but don’t want to make any official announcements until the players have arrived safely in the squad. I believe we have a side capable of staying up, and even causing a few surprises’’
Come on, any clues? We’ve all heard the rumours
‘’Ha-ha, no sorry, I’m not sure I can remember them all anyway. My assistant tells me we have 4 first teamers left from last season at the moment, and we have signed players from all around the world, including two outfielders of a rating not seen here before.’’ It is still possible more deals might be struck, particularly in defence, but the side is almost ready it is believed.
So, any other pre-season news?
‘’Not really, we don’t plan on spending anything on stadium or the youth system this year, our focus has been on recruitment. We do have 23 players after our youth player comes in, and we are not in debt, I am reliably informed! It’s likely one of the new lads coming in will take over as captain this season’’
Any predictions for the new season?
‘’As I said, our main aim is survival this year, though I do believe now that we have the potential to do better than that, but there is a huge step up in terms of quality from EF2, so no doubt it is going to be a hard season. I think there might be a bit of the changing of the guard this year, giving the number of new managers, and some sides having to get rid of experienced, older players’’
Thank you and good luck! More news to follow once the new signings have arrived.
