  • Spero to depart Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen today made official one of the worst kept secrets in FFO. Chris Spero will not be retained as manager once the season ends. Sources within the organization say it is a mutual parting of ways. The manager released the following statement to the press:

"It is disappointing to admit failure. The board of directors and I have decided to end our brief association following the end of the season. I am grateful to Bayer Leverkusen's ownership, players, staff and fans for giving me the chance to manage such a great club. Although things did not turn out as any of us had hoped, now is the time to make a statement so we can focus on the remaining fixtures and continue to fight to stay out of relegation."

When Spero returned to FFO last season, he took on EFL1 minnows Schalke. Despite fielding essentially a EFL 2 squad, they managed to play until the last match day before dropping down. Many believe that this success is what led the Leverkusen board to give him a shot after legendary club manager Jason Hopton sought a new challenge. Prior to rejoining FFO, Chris managed Wolves in FFO 1's Championship, building them up to a promotion contender but never achieving it. It is generally felt at this point in his career that he is more suited to the second tier.
