Atletico Madrid today heard the first of the news coming out with regards to end of season prize money. A fairer system is being modelled to provide a fairer share of the money around the league. It appears to be based on the last two seasons finishing positions to produce an expected finishing position. Atletico, from memory have finished 5th and 4th in the last two season so would have an expected finish around 4.5th place. With the club situated in 7th not a million miles away from their expected finish it was a surprise to find the club the 18th lowest earners in the division with a potential £5,714,286 made available to them in comparison to Celtics £15,428,571. Even clubs rooted at the foot of the league Marseille and Leipzig are expected to earn considerably more than Atletico.
Manager Simon Marsh commented "We are all for a fairer system and great share of the funds but it looks like punching above our weight for 2 seasons will have a massively detrimental affect on our end of season money. With money about to become real king, every penny will be crucial with extra seats, academy players, academy coaching, auctions and transfers to deal with in the not too distant future. It looks like we not only have to knuckle down and try and attain a top-8 position but we really need to climb the league. At present we are more likely to go down places with Inter, Lisbon and Lazio all within 3-points of us. To move up three we would have to overcome a 7-point gap to Barca and Milan".
