  • Atletico's March league games

Atletico Madrid 7 Real Sociedad 2

One of the early season disappointing results was losing away at Sociedad. Homework helped here with Sociedad forced into a 4-3-3 formation due to a missing player. This resulted in Atletico sacrefycing a defender for an attacking player to ensure a very open game ensued. A shot count of 35-19 resulted in a big league win for the home side.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "That was a great victory that pushed us up into 07th place. The season has really changed for the better and we have Juve and Ac Milan as targets to hunt down over the coming weeks. We have taken a big advantage over the poor form of Lisbon and Lazio and have given ourselves a great chance of finishing back in the champions league places".

Bookings for Sessegnon and Frimpong will be huge absentees away to the free scoring Real Madrid side.

    M_Skriniar 28 slo 1 23 17 12 27 1 110 28 752 - improved his passing to 17. He is one of the best defenders in the game now.
    M_van_de_Ven 22 ned 1 21 16 13 28 1 225 779 4 improved his shooting to 13.

Minutes wise Atletico are really managing the squad well. 20/25 players have now reached their retaining minutes. R_Nainggolan will not reach his and there are plans for him to be sold prior to the transfer deadline. There are no concerns that any other player will not make their minutes.

    Good game Kev

    PSG 0 Atletico Madrid 0

With a squad missing three key players and four more players walking a booking tightrope this was a trip made even harder than normal. Atletico were forced into the transfer market for Yoshida and Stepanenko who both started the game this evening. These were players who would struggle to get a game in EFL2 but they walked off the pitch heroes after a gritty Atletico performance kept the PSG superstars at bay. In truth PSG should have won the game with a 14-1 shot count. A packed out defensive side was still too easily opened up but Haaland was not firing and the man-to-man marking of danger man Bastoni kept him quiet for once.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "Naturally we are delighted to extend our unbeaten run and gain a point that was very unlikely. Playing defence in this league is often criticised by fellow managers but I fail to see what else we could do tonight. We have never really had any success with defence before but our team was well below par and even at its best the chances of getting a result at PSG are slim. In truth we were trying to keep the goal difference impact low".

Asked with regards to the Ramos red card and its effect in the Champions League match Marsh added "I thought Ramos was lucky to be on the pitch as long as he was. He should have walked just after half-time but these big teams get the decisions. Maybe we could have even nicked a win here, its plain to see it was a clear second yellow card on the 46th minute. As for the Champions League it may well go against us. PSG will now play a more defensive game without him and we need to score. They will perhaps try to do to us what we have done to them and gain their revenge".

Atletico got more minutes for players with 16/25 players having now made their retaining minutes.

Skriniar became only the 5th player to make 23-rated defensive skill.

    Good game Ed.

Atletico Madrid 3 Bayern Leverkusen 0

Perhaps fortunate to be playing a Bayern side who had one eye on getting two fringe players minutes. This gave the home side a greater chance of dominating the game. A shot count of 16-9 enough to gain a valuable 3 points and extend the unbeaten league run to 12 games. Atletico did have their own weakness with the injury to Mbabu who will sit out one match due to a niggle.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "Its a great win against a side who should go better this second half now they have a second striker of relevance in their squad. We are on a good run and we should be travelling to PSG in confident mood but unfortunately we are decimated by injuries and suspensions. We will need to enter the transfer market to raise decent teamsheet and give us a chance of causing an upset. We still have enough quality to cause them problems and we cant afford to not give it our best shot with the league looking so tight for a top-8 place".

Musso managed to get himself back to 25-rated but this will be tested with two games coming versus PSG.

13/25 players now have enough minutes to be retained for next season

    Good game Chris

Transfer news - Atletico entered the market after the game to bring in Yoshida and Stepanenko. With three players currently missing and 4 players on a booking tightrope more numbers were needed in the short-term.

    Barcelona 0 Atletico Madrid 4

Indeed this one was a complete reversal of the first half to the season where both ends of the Atletico team actually worked for a change and for probably the first time in the league this season. This was a big game. After gifting the top sides victories at the Wanda Metropolitano early in the season the difficult challenge of travelling back to those clubs and grabbing something back has been presented. Atletico needed victory if they are to have any possibility of catching Barcelona in the league this season. Defeat would have left an unsurmountable 14 points. First goals are often so important as taking the lead led to gaining the tactical advantage Atletico had lost at the kick off. The start of this game felt like a 9-darter to to win against the throw and from there we were able to hold the darts for the rest of the game despite losing a finger when Paqueta was sent off.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "We edged the shot count but more importantly the gods are moving back to our side again and we gratefully request they stay with us. We are in the top 8 for the first time since Round 1. Its taken 20 rounds to get back there and a decent run of undefeated form. Hopefully we can keep it going".

Next up for Atletico is the trip to PSG, scant reward for winning Group A.

Marsh added "If we are to win trophies you have to beat the best at some point. We saw off Roma in the group states and whilst our record against PSG is not good we will give it all we have to try and advance".

Good news for the club tonight with the 10th player completing their required minutes and Musso making a 25-rated goalkeeper.

    GG and unlucky Livi

    Lazio 1 Atletico Madrid 1

With both teams chasing the half-way 08th position trophy the respective managers allowed for attacking flair. 2 early goals cancelled each out before the game became quite edgy with 5 yellow cards

Atletico boss SimonnMarsh commented “This was a big game to end the half way season in the champions league positions, unthinkable a few weeks ago. Pleased that the unbeaten run continues and keeps us fighting. We have clawed back a lot of points and right now it looks like 10 possibly 11 clubs chasing 8 positions”.

Atletico are next up away at Manchester United missing three key forwards for the game.

Marsh added “We are down to the bare bones but will pick a side to try and get a result. It’s only fair on Roma. It will be hard to find a side that has a chance of nicking a win whilst staying compact but that’s a challenge we will take on”

    Marseille 2 Atletico Madrid 6

Finally the Atletico faithful saw their side score some goals this season as the team looked to carry on their improved league form. An open game saw both sides with plenty of chances. For a long time Atletico led by only 1 until the floodgates opened.

Manager Simon Marsh commented “A great victory for us and we are showing real signs now of reversing the horribly unlucky start to the season. We find ourselves up to 9th place and only 1 point outside of the champions league places which seemed an absolute mile off not long ago. If we can go to Latino and win we will be in the top8 come the half way point. We have hope of attacking over achievers Sporting Lisbon and Ac Milan in the second half of the season although we know we have a difficult fixture list with most of the top sides away from home”

Real Madrid 1 Atletico Madrid 0

The defensive line up at PSG could not be repeated with both Frimpong and Sessegnon missing from the squad due to suspension. Atletico therefore went with the best they could offer but which included an 18-rated Pieters in defence. The game was relatively mundane despite both sides willingness to commit attacking players into their line-ups. A final shot count of 7-7 was one the away followers would have hoped enough to keep their 14-game unbeaten run going but getting anything from the pesky 3 is very difficult with their higher rated flair but the dice roll of 5-1 on target was the other crucial factor here.

Manager Simon Marsh commented "It was a shame not to be able to have the full team at our disposal but we have shown again we can give the pesky-3 a game these days. At least its one of the difficult games out of the way now but we must still travel away to Roma and Juventus so getting another unbeaten run going will be hard. With the end of season prize money very poor as it stands its imperative we fall no lower than where we are now".

21/25 players have now made their retaining minutes and the suspension tightrope as eased somewhat.

    Good game Steve
