Norwich City Board Give Up On Season
After spending the off-season searching for the right manager to guide the club through the upcoming Championship season the Norwich City board of directors effectively gave up on any chance of success by appointing serial caretaker John Read as the clubs interim manager.
Read is a long serving manager with over 30 seasons experience, in England and across Europe, but with minimal success at the multitude of clubs he has been in charge with. As revealed earlier in the off season, one his biggest successes in England was to guide an unfancied Sunderland into European football at the first time of asking, however this was actually a very long time ago, since then he has enjoyed 2 league titles as a caretaker with Bayern Munich, but while the name still exists – that club is not the same as it was then.
Read has made a career of being less than average, never bad enough to get the boot but never good enough to have people clamouring to offer him a job at a bigger club.
When the subject turned to his new club at a recent press conference Read had the following comments to make:
“I’m certainly happy to be here, I enjoyed my season in the Championship last season with Luton and given everything I’m quietly proud of our 14th place finish –and whichever way you look at it, my involvement last season put them in a place to attract a permanent manager. We’ve got the makings of a good squad here at Norwich but it is a little unbalanced for the type of football I’ll be looking to play here.
“We’ve got a very promising midfield B_Sainz, M_Nunex, L_Gibbs, J_Rowe are the building blocks for the future alongside captain Christian Fassnacht but we also have a lot of players in midfield who aren’t going to get the time on the pitch that they want. On top of this we’ve got too many forward players who are in the same boat, barring many injuries I’m not sure I see a game where Ashley Barnes is our main striker – we’ve had a conversation and I’m relieved to say that he sees it the same way I do. However we can’t go into a season with only 5 first team defender so my target is to try and recruit a couple of defenders for the first team and if that means we need to lose a couple of our squad elsewhere on the pitch then that is what we’ll have to do.
“We certainly aren’t the worst team in the Championship, I certainly haven’t come here to make up the numbers – but equally we are only a few days into “the project” so I warn the fans against expecting too much too soon.
“We need to recruit a couple of defenders, maybe look at goalkeepers and forwards, and once we’ve achieved that we can have a more realistic focus for the coming season.
