At the end of season break we are focusing on one of Leeds United's deals in the transfer market to examine the figures.
Leeds sold Enzo Fernandez to Celtic for
and replaced him with Sofian Amrabat for
£86,700,000
That is a profit of
£83,300,000
Let's examine the two players

As you can see Leeds have a higher standard of player, all be it losing out on some shooting and have lost four years. It would seem to be a very shrewd bit of business from manager Tim Davey who has spoken to us about this deal............
"I am delighted with these two deals. It highlights the business acumen of the club and shows the small gains we are able to make. When you piece together deals like this and multiply them over a few seasons it makes a huge difference to the club. It helps us progress. We have acquired a better play, all be it minimally and gained over 80 mil. We have lost 4 years in terms of age but for the value we have gotten out of the deal that is well worth it. It's incremental deals like this which helps us to be able to out perform our expectations and beyond our limits. There are a number of clubs in the game such as Man City, Roma, Real Madrid, PSG who are vastly superior in terms of finances and squad strength and it's getting the right balance in your squad and getting transfers right consistently that helps you remain competitive and hopefully keeps you in the conversation when it comes to honours. The auction can be a great tool to be able to improve your squad and that's why I always try and keep money back for it and generally it does pay off. You can kind of guess where people will be bidding and if you bid smart you have a good chance of getting your target.............. if you bid on the right player. We outbid Spurs by less than 10 mil and there is a degree of skill in that which we are pleased with. It takes experience and a bit of forethought.
We are lucky to have fans that are not expectant and that do not mount pressure on the club and the players and staff. They enjoy the entertaining football we play and really appreciate it when we are able to bring some success and trophy's but do not turn on us when we are not able to provide these. It comes down to footballing knowledge and our fans have that. They know we are not on the same tier as the big heads but massively appreciate that we are sometimes able to give them a run for their money. I'll be honest it makes it an easy job than managing a big head, the pressure is huge and every loss is sneered at by the rest of the game. Your often on a hiding to nothing if you don't win the lot which rarely happens. The managers at those clubs need to be thick skinned and I don't think I am all that well suited to that. I had some great success at Madrid but ultimately I did not enjoy it anywhere near as much as Leeds because the pressure is much less and it's easier to be an underdog. It's not that I am not ambitious but I find it more enjoyable and love the challenge of trying to punch above our weight. We did exactly that last season which ignited wild celebrations from the players, staff, fans and myself. I expect it will be quite some time for that to be repeated but we will always give our best to try and make it happen.
Ultimately it is my job to get us to a place where we are a member of the big head club, that's why these incremental transfer wins are so important to keep moving forward. But we know only too well every other club are doing or at least trying to the the exact same. Everyone can't win out of every deal so somewhere there are plenty y of people losing out, you just have to use your experience and noose to try and stay on the right side of the gains. It is a near impossible challenge to catch these sides, they all have managers who are very astute and experienced, they are all under pressure to keep the standards up so are motivated to keep progressing their clubs and with the players and finances at their disposal they generally have first dibs on the best players coming into the game. Look at the auction and Man City spending £693,000,000. Absolutely mind blowing sums. Now that player is not accessible to us. We would have to sell pretty much our whole squad to buy that player and even then might get pipped!!! He is an absolute beast and the edge he will give City will make it so hard for the rest of the prem. So all we can do is keep chipping away at these incremental gains and transfer gains to slowly attempt to catch them,. It may not be possible but one thing we do know and have prove, is that we an punch above our weight and give them a run for the money and that is what we continue to strive to do. "
