Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio have announced the appointment of Gary Goodson as their new manager for the forthcoming season. After previous spells with Gimnastic and Palermo, Goodson, 43, is seen as a somewhat surprising appointment for the Bergamo club, considering his lack of success at both of his previous clubs. Goodson was presented to the media at the Gewiss Stadium this afternoon and spoke through an interpreter.

    ON HIS APPOINTMENT:
I'm delighted to be here and to be given this opportunity with this fantastic club. Atalanta have trusted me to help steer them on the next step of their journey and I intend to fully repay that faith. It's a great club with a loyal fanbase and something we want to tap into here at the Gewiss.

ON HIS PLANS FOR THE CLUB:
I think we firstly want to consolidate our position in the EFL2, but we also want to be competitive. We have a good squad here with a mix of youth and experience. We've some exciting talent coming through here to compliment some of the more senior players and will ensure we can compete this season.

    ON FUTURE TRANSFER DEALINGS:
I think we want to take stock and assess the market first. With being out of the game for a while now, I think we need to see how things stand before we rush into any major business. We have already brought in Tayvon Gray for around 10m today, he is a exciting talent and one we feel can grow with us.

HIS DECISION TO APPOINT SCALVINI AS CAPTAIN:
There is no doubting that the world is at his feet and he has the potential to go on and be one of the great Italian defenders that this country is renowned for producing. It's a big responsibility to be made captain, but after speaking with the staff here, they feel he is ready and can cope with the extra pressure that being captain brings.
