FIORENTINA NEWS
Once a powerhouse of European football, Fiorentina had disappeared in recent years, but in news which has sent the Italian fans wild, they are back baby!
Quite how to explain the circumstances of the rebirth is a little tricky, but we'll give it a go.. transported from an alternate dimension? promotion? buy out? dodgy dealing? who knows
PSV boss Neil Kirby is to be the new manager of the club, and even more surprisingly has brought his whole team with him!
We interviewed Kirby to try and find out more -
''It's an unusual one for sure, but it was something that had to happen for my safety and the club's security. It was due to the fall out from the previous PSV manager Simon Clark's tenure. Since I started at PSV I have been subjected to threats, mistaken identity, and accused of fraud, and something had to change. To the mafia bosses out to kill me, and the police who wanted to arrest me, I AM NOT SIMON CLARK. All I can think of is the previous boss must have been very dodgy to have so many people out to get him. He disappeared apparently, though there is an 'Ed Clark' at PSG, who looks suspiciously like him. I tried telling the police and crime bosses but they didn't believe me. My lawyers suggested that the only way out was to sell the club, and move to Italy for a fresh start, so here I am!''
So why Fiorentina?
''They are a side with a rich history, with many fans still remembering the Gabriel Batistuta years. In FFO they used to be one of the top sides, under the management of the shady figure of Frank, but they were left to drift a little in their later years, then mysteriously disappeared, perhaps relegated for financial irregularities. To be honest I love the purple kits!''
What are the expectations for the new season?
''It is really hard to predict who next season will go to be honest, we are going to be facing a lot of new sides, and some good teams who were relegated from EFL1. I would hope we will be in the top 6 making a push for promotion, but until the season starts and I see the opposition squads I have no idea.''
How do you feel the squad is shaping up?
''We finished the season with a good side, just missing a few players to where I want the side to be. We don't have many older players, so there is no immediate panic to sell off before seasonal aging comes back in, but I would like to sign at least one youngster to develop. I am excited to see how Nunez performs in a full season for us, after impressing in the latter stages of last season.
We have some really good players such as Dembele, Nunez, and Busquets and we hope to be active in the market this season, but unfortunately there is no transfer news to date.''
What do you think of the difficult atmosphere around the manager's association?
''I've been just keeping my head down and getting on with it, there are obviously some very hot headed managers, some who like to wind people up for a living, and some who are very paranoid, I don't think I fit into any of those categories, and hope things settle down. I think the removal of discord is a good move, and look forward to the new season without some of the toxic discussions that have been happening of late''
Roll on the new season!
