  • A week of hard work

MANCHESTER UNITED STRUFGGLED THIS WEEK WITH THEIR RESULTS DESPITE SOME POSITIVE PERFORMANCES. WINS AT HOME TO BRISTOL CITY AND WEST HAM IN THE CUP, FOLLOWED A 2-2 TIE AWAY AT REIGNING CHAMPIONS TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR. UNITED REMAIN 2ND IN THE LEAGUE BUT HAVE NOW LOST GROUND TO MANCHESTER CITY, FALLING 5 POINTS BEHIND.

United controlled the tie against Bristol City but didn't make enough of the chances created and a solitary Raheem Sterling goal was the difference. Gavi used a quick throw-in for Sterling to chase through. The Englishman stabbed an effort past the charging goalkeeper early in the first half. As stated United looked comfortable but not ruthless in the tie. Outten said "It was a game where we have to accept what we got. The lads remained professional to say the least but I feel with bit of composure and calmness we could've added more goals. Look, it is what it is, we get 3 points and we now prepare for this weeks games".

United entered the FA cup in round three and look to get to a 4th straight domestic cup final in a row but first needed to navigate a home tie against West ham United. The Irons parked the bus for the entire tie and offered very little but United kept at the task at hand. Eventually Ricardo Calafiori found Luis Diaz whos first shot was well saved by the goalkeeper, but was on hand for slotting in the rebound. United saw out the tie as job done. "It's cup football, win or bust and we won. End of. West Ham gave us a wall to break down and admittedly we did struggle but we kept the ball well and gave them little to work at. Maybe we should've hit more balls long to cause more issues in the box but we did what we needed to and we'll wait for the draw for the next round."

Friday United travelled to London and found a stuborn Tottenham side. Both sides missing key men meant an air of caution was utilised by both teams. However Spurs broke the deadlock first with Steven Bergweijn heading in Gimenez's cross, Jan Oblak should've done better allowing the header to go through his legs. Spurs dropped deep and looked to see out the tie which compromised United a bit but the reds. Gavi instigating another quick throw, this time Luis Diaz on hand to power an effort goalwards, the keeper got a hand to it but the ball trickled over the line despite Green trying to claw it away. Spurs did take the lead again though, Jose Gimenez improvised a cool headed finish with 20 minutes to go, but from the kick off United levelled again, Asprilla sized up his marker and fired a wicked ball into Raheem Sterling who struck first time. United had more of the game but another day where they lacked a cutting edge this time cost them. "We had chances, we had the ball but on a day like today we missed Karim upfront. He's dry of goals but his movement and positional sense may have cause a few more issues than Sterling did, he's a different player. But with the players we have and the way we played, I can't fault the lads for effort but we need to get better infront of goal. We have lacked some potency for a while and today it's cost us. We've made this week harder than it should've been, for sure and wake up calls are needed for the remainder of the season."
