MANCHESTER UNITED HAVE ONCE AGAIN STARTED THE SEASON WITH A DEFEAT, THIS TIME AT THE HANDS OF ARCH RIVALS MANCHESTER CITY. THE CITIZENS STRUCK TWICE IN THE SECOND HALF TO SEAL THE TIE, IN A RATHER SUBDUED AND QUIET GAME. FRIDAY UNITED HAD THE CHANCE TO GET GOING WITH ANOTHER TRICKY TIE AT HOME TO LEEDS UNITED BUT SAW OUT A BORE DRAW LEAVING THE CLUB WITH NO GOALS AND 1 POINT AFTER 2 GAMES.
United set up in a cagey 5-4-1 against City, with the home side being similarly cautious in their approach starting with a 5-3-2 formation themselves. As a result the first half lead a quiet affair with a game seeing just three shots, the most guilt edge chance came from Karim Adeyemi who rounded Ederson but dragged his effort wide of the far post. In the second half the tie became a traditional derby with tackles flying and cards being shown, United started to take more risks and instantly found themselves a goal down after tweaking their tactics, Bernardo Silva curling a cute effort from outside the box. A further reactive United then played more into Citys hands. As United threw men forward Amadou Onana managed to disposes Lisandro Martinez and tee up Dusan Vlahovic for a simple tap in.
Post match Outten said: "This is the toughest league game of our season and to be honest I was content with the defensive work first half, we nullified them and I felt that they got very frustrated. I'm annoyed once we tried get show more positivity in the game we just opened up for them. We deserved better for the first hour or so, but ultimately we gifted them the points. We'll have to improve going forward and I am confident we will, but its frustrating we lose the opening game of the season, we've done that too often in recent seasons."
United then hosted Leeds United in round 2. A goalless draw was played out but United dominated large parts of the game, and young goalkeeper Mike Taylor made 8 saves for Leeds earning man of the match in the process. United fans left Old Trafford baffled and some questioning the future of Luis Diaz who had a very quiet game with plenty of talk surround his future coming to the surface this off season. Speaking after the game Outten looked perplexed at the game. "We did everything right apart from score. What more can we do when it's like this. The end of the day our finishing let us down and this is a huge blow for us, we missed a great opportunity here. We know Leeds came for a draw and they got what they wanted. We expected 3 points and we got one. Serious questions will be asked if we don't get going Monday against Blackburn, but this week we've not been good enough."
In other news, Manchester United have rejected an approach for Karim Adeyemi, the German striker has been subject to plenty of interested with on club trying to reignite their aspirations of signing him. The club have swiftly rejected talk of a transfer and wont entertain bids for their best player.
