Chelsea opens new FFO season at Newcastle amid Andy Banks transfer saga fallout
Chelsea is set to kick off the new FFO season with an away trip to Newcastle United. Manager Steven K. Talbot has been the talk of the summer after a whirlwind transfer period that saw him bring over half of Real Madrid’s roster in a blockbuster window for the club. Critics have pointed out that many of these signings came from Madrid’s older guard, but Talbot balanced the scales by securing two of Europe’s brightest young talents: 23 year old's, Rafael Leão and Jérémy Doku.
The acquisition of Doku, however, came before a dramatic transfer saga involving Juventus, helmed by their controversial former manager Andy Banks. Banks’ extreme persistent interest in Doku, alongside a series of missteps in other deals, added an air of chaos to the transfer market. Juventus famously pursued Doku for months, but a final agreement couldn’t be reached, as Talbot cited Banks’ history of last minute renegotiations and erratic behavior with Talbot not sure the bid from Juventus and Banks was even real. This history included failed deals with PSG’s J_Lepenant and Arsenal's (at the time) Ansu_Fati, both of which ended with Banks pulling out of both deals at critical junctures.
Banks’ unpredictability also had a ripple effect on Chelsea’s summer plans. The “Chelsea Spice Boys,” as the London club has been dubbed, had prepared a bid to sign Raheem Sterling from Manchester United for £95m. However, uncertainty surrounding the Doku deal meant Chelsea couldn’t risk overextending their finances, leading to the collapse of Sterling’s proposed move. While Chelsea apologised to Manchester United for the inconvenience, the club maintained that they had also offered a lucrative alternative deal, one that was better than any other deal United had receieved, but United ultimately declined as was their right prefering to keep hold of the player.
The drama didn’t end there.
There was no doubt in Talbot's mind that Banks would have tried to rengeoiate if the shoe was on the other foot, in terms of the new bonus abs feature meaning players could have bonus points added onto their skills. Anyone else and Talbot would have thought twice in striking up a conversation about it, but not with Andy Banks and his reputation. Andy Banks told Talbot upon his enquiry that "I wish you die from a stroke", which was an uterly bizzare response on any level and was the final action that saw the deal collaspe. Andy Banks resigned from Juventus shortly after the Doku deal therefore fell apart. This marked a fitting end of a tenure fraught with strained relationships and unmet expectations with the Old Lady failing to push on past the likes of Real Madrid and PSG and no major silverwear won in terms of league titles, champions league or domestic cups. This failure I believe was mostly due to these strained managerial relationships and his perhaps overly strict age policy meaning that he was consistently failing to improve the side on the pitch every season, outwith auctions . He has since been replaced by Blackburn Rovers veteran manager Tony Ayre, leaving Juventus to rebuild under new leadership.
For Chelsea, the focus now turns to the pitch. Retaining Doku is a significant coup for Talbot, who will aim to improve on last season’s 6th place finish and secure Champions League football once more, a competition they remarkably reached the final of last season. With a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging stars, the Blues are ready to make their mark in the new campaign.
The season opener at St. James’ Park promises to be a thrilling encounter, and Chelsea fans will hope Talbot’s bold transfer decisions pay dividends as the season unfolds.
