  • Sheffield United Caretakers Diary: Chapter 7 "Do the Work!"

There are problems storing up at Bramall Lane though with eight first team players 31 years of age and over and unless Dave can conjure up some magic Sheffield United could soon become a Club in deep trouble.” --GW

The Blades look a lot different post-bonanza. Just not better. I’ve been starting at the roster and trying to figure out how Sheffield United can negotiate a Premiership season with that talent. It’s not looking good.

Keeper: A keeper with a St rating of 24 is the minimum for the Premiership. We’ll be ok with Gulacsi. He’s going to retire, and we have have an academy player to bring in for Season 6.

Defenders: The strongest group. Because the other positions were decimated by retirements, I didn’t have the luxury replace many defenders. I did pull in an inexpensive backup that was a couple of points better than his predecessor. Baby steps, Baby steps.. I have three defenders in the re-rate zone, and at least one of them is in his last season. I have two academy player that can be brought up for Season 6. I hope they have a good training season.

Midfielders: Another three players in the re-rate zone. There is no help coming from the academy next season, and I’m going to have to give all these senior citizens their minutes to hang on to them for Season 6. The priority after that is give the two 20 year-olds all the abs they can earn. If I can conjure a better midfielder out of the transfer list I might consider it.

Forwards: This is where most of the new players ended up. I loaned in Palladino from Ant, and the boy is going to be busy. One of the three re-rate forwards will retire at the end of the season. I’ll try to hang on to both of the other old dudes, but these 20 year-olds need to get some abs, or next season (which will probably be back in The Championship) will be really ugly.

Treasury: The Blades will stay out of financial trouble this season. I purchased two academy players and a cheap SHN buy and that’s it. Cash will be slightly positive, and we’ll hope for a couple of good Cup runs. We’re not counting on it. Sheffield United will have to pull a keeper out of the academy and replace him, so the interim manager is counting pennies to finance that.

No magic this season. Just work to bang this old club back into shape for new manager. The motto for Sheffield United in Season 5 is “Do the work!”
