Borussia Dortmund Welcome Back Loan Duo Amidst Red Tape Drama

Borussia Dortmund have successfully resolved a bureaucratic saga to secure the return of two players who spent last season out on loan. Defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who played for Tottenham, and midfielder Reinier, who featured at Sporting Lisbon, are finally back with the squad after a series of delays caused by Dortmund's relegation and managerial upheaval amongst the FA losing both players paperwork in a clerical error.

The players' returns were held up by red tape and protracted discussions with the FA, which spanned several days.

A Dramatic Twist: Branthwaite’s Unexpected Transfer

The situation took an unexpected turn when it emerged that Tottenham had quietly sold Jarrad Branthwaite to Bayer Leverkusen during his loan spell. Adding to the confusion, Leverkusen reportedly attempted to offload the player again before the FA intervened to resolve the matter.

While Branthwaite has now returned to Dortmund, his time away has left him disillusioned. The defender has expressed a desire to move on, citing frustration with the handling of his situation. Dortmund wasted no time in acting, arranging a swift deal with Monaco to send Branthwaite to EFL1. In exchange, Dortmund secured the services of experienced fullback Oleksandr Zinchenko and a significant cash injection to aid their rebuilding efforts.

    Reinier’s Quiet Reintegration

In contrast to Branthwaite’s tumultuous return, Reinier’s journey back from Sporting Lisbon was relatively straightforward once the red tape was cleared. The talented midfielder is eager to prove himself under Wilson and looks set to play a key role in the club’s long-term plans, although rumours around the club suggest Wilson may send the player back out on Loan to Lisbon for one more season. The playmaker is said to be keen to play for the club in EFL2 but Wilson is insistent he spends one more season in top flight football to understand the rigours and demands needed to succeed at the club, with Sporting Lisbon already using their loan slots for the season the club cannot loan another player for at least 8 league games.

    Borussia Dortmund Targeting Under-25 Talent

Borussia Dortmund, now financially stable and ranked as one of the richest clubs in FFO despite their relegation, The club, known for its historic focus on youth development, has doubled down on its philosophy, targeting talented players aged 25 and under. With significant cash reserves and an ambitious rebuild underway, Dortmund is prepared to spend big to secure their future stars.

Under the guidance of manager Garysean Wilson, Dortmund is pursuing a clear strategy: investing in young, high-potential players who can grow with the club. This approach is not just about short-term success but is deeply rooted in the club’s long-term vision of creating a "factory of football stars."

    Financial Power in the Market

Dortmund's financial stability gives them a distinct advantage. With a club value of £854 million and a bank balance of £70 million with a rumoured 250m worth of outgoing talent, the club is prepared to make significant offers to attract top talent. Their willingness to pay “good cash” for the right players signals an aggressive approach to the transfer market, ensuring they compete with FFOs elite for emerging stars.
Recent rumours have linked Dortmund with several exciting prospects, including players from South America, Eastern Europe, and even other relegated sides across EFL & Championship. The club is reportedly monitoring several players but focus will be on the mid-season auction where Wilson believes with the balance coming in Dortmund will have number one pick, dwarfing any other clubs balance.

While the focus remains on players under 25, Dortmund is careful not to overlook the need for balance. Deals like the recent acquisition of Oleksandr Zinchenko highlight their willingness to add experienced professionals who can mentor younger players and stabilise the squad during the rebuild.
Beyond transfers, Dortmund’s commitment to youth development extends to infrastructure. The club has already expanded their stadium to a 75,000-seat capacity and is pouring resources into world-class training facilities. These investments ensure that any young player joining the club will have the tools and environment to reach their full potential.

    Eyes on the Prize

Dortmund’s vision is clear: to assemble one of the most talented and youthful squads in world football. While immediate promotion back to the top leagues isn’t the priority, the club’s long-term ambition to dominate both domestically and in Europe is unmistakable. Their aggressive pursuit of young talent is just one piece of the puzzle in their journey back to greatness.

With their financial muscle and clear strategy, Borussia Dortmund is poised to become a powerhouse of player development and a major force in the footballing world once again as it’s only a matter of time before clubs take notice of what’s going on at the club.

Dortmund Manager Addresses Bloated Squad and High Wage Concerns

Borussia Dortmund manager Garysean Wilson has addressed concerns about the club's oversized squad and high wage bill, reassuring fans that decisive action will be taken following a thorough preseason assessment. With over 30 players currently on the roster, Wilson has emphasised the need to trim the squad to ensure financial stability and maintain a cohesive team structure at the club.

Despite Dortmund’s financial strength and lofty ambitions, the sheer size of the current squad presents logistical and economic challenges. The wage bill has ballooned, with many players earning significant salaries despite limited contributions to the team. This has put additional pressure on the club’s management as they seek to align their resources with Garysean Wilson’s long-term vision.

Speaking at a press conference, Wilson acknowledged the concerns of the fans while outlining his approach to addressing the issue.
"At the moment, we have a squad that’s far too large. It’s impossible to give every player the minutes they need to develop or contribute meaningfully," Wilson said. "This preseason is crucial. Every player will be assessed thoroughly, and tough decisions will be made. The focus is on building a balanced, streamlined squad that aligns with our long-term goals."

Wilson stressed that the goal is not just to offload players but to ensure the club retains the right blend of talent and potential while bringing the squad number down to 23, which means 7 or more players will be sold.

A key part of Wilson’s philosophy is Dortmund’s return to its roots: prioritising youth development and cultivating talent. By reducing the wage bill and moving on surplus players, the club can reinvest in its academy and future stars.

"We want a squad that reflects our identity—hungry, young, and full of potential," Wilson continued. "The players who stay will be those who are fully committed to this project and our vision for the future."

The coming weeks are expected to see significant activity in the transfer market. Several fringe players are rumoured to be on the chopping block.
Wilson and the board have already begun identifying potential suitors for players who no longer fit the club’s plans. Simultaneously, the manager has reassured supporters that any funds raised will be reinvested wisely, whether in securing emerging talent or improving infrastructure.

While some fans may lament the departure of familiar faces, the majority have expressed support for Wilson’s pragmatic approach. The manager’s commitment to addressing the club’s challenges head-on has resonated, with many seeing this as a necessary step toward sustainable success, Dortmund have finished no higher than 16 in the last 5 seasons and despite outside noise claiming the club should be in EFL 1 the fans understand a new approach is now needed for long term vision.

Garysean Wilson’s handling of the bloated squad and wage concerns underscores his determination to rebuild Dortmund into a powerhouse. As the preseason progresses, fans can expect clarity and action, setting the stage for a revitalised Borussia Dortmund ready to reclaim its place among Europe’s elite.

Wilson Backs Long-Term Youth Plan: No Promotion Until 2026

Borussia Dortmund manager Garysean Wilson has reaffirmed the club’s commitment to a bold, youth-focused rebuilding project, emphasising that promotion back to top-flight football will not be prioritised until 2027. In a recent statement, Wilson outlined the club’s vision to create a sustainable model built on nurturing young talent, supported by recent investments in scouting and coaching staff and that it takes time, the next two seasons will be focused on rebuilding the playing squad to an acceptable level. As part of Dortmund’s strategy, two additional scouts and two new coaches have been brought into the fold. These hires are aimed at enhancing the club’s ability to identify and develop promising players, ensuring that Dortmund becomes a breeding ground for future stars.

Wilson praised the new hires, emphasising their importance in achieving the club’s vision.

"The additions to our scouting and coaching teams are critical," he said. "We’re building a system that not only identifies the best young talent but also provides them with the environment to thrive. These are individuals with proven track records in youth development, and they align perfectly with our philosophy."

Dortmund has long been celebrated for its ability to produce and develop exceptional players. Wilson’s plan aims to take this reputation to new heights by creating a "factory of football stars." The club’s academy, already valued at £149 million, is set to play a central role in this initiative.

"We are focused on creating a conveyor belt of talent," Wilson explained. "The players we develop won’t just strengthen Dortmund; they’ll represent the future of football. Our goal is to produce stars who are not only technically gifted but also embody the values and identity of this club."

        Delayed Promotion for Long-Term Gains

While fans and pundits alike may expect Dortmund to push for immediate promotion, Wilson has made it clear that this is not the priority. The Scotsman’s five-season plan is centred on laying a robust foundation before aiming for top-tier success.

"Success doesn’t come overnight," Wilson stated. "We’re taking the time to get it right. By 2026, we aim to have one of the youngest, most talented squads in Europe, supported by world-class facilities and a clear philosophy. Only then will we be ready to challenge for promotion and, ultimately, greater ambitions."

Wilson acknowledged that this approach requires patience from fans, but he expressed confidence in their understanding and support. The expanded 75,000-seat stadium reflects the club’s ambition, and the passionate Dortmund faithful are expected to play a vital role in this journey.

"The fans are the heartbeat of this club," Wilson said. "We’re asking them to trust the process. The rewards will be worth the wait."

By focusing on youth development and strategic investments in personnel, Borussia Dortmund is amongst a number of other clubs setting the way for youth development. With Garysean Wilson at the helm, the club is on track to redefine itself and lay the groundwork for a bright and prosperous future.

As the project progresses, all eyes will be on Dortmund’s academy and the talented individuals it produces, with the hope that this bold plan will restore the club to its rightful place among EFL elite.

Wilson Unfazed by Pressure: Development Over Promotion

Garysean Wilson, the manager at the helm of Borussia Dortmund’s ambitious rebuild, has made it clear that external expectations and pressure mean little to him. Despite many tipping Dortmund as favourites to win the league and secure promotion this season, Wilson remains steadfast in his commitment to long-term development over immediate success.

          Blocking Out the Noise

With Dortmund’s financial strength, stadium expansion, and impressive talent pool, many pundits and fans see them as the team to beat in EFL 2. Yet, Wilson has dismissed these predictions as “outside noise” that won’t influence his approach.

"Pressure? It’s just part of the game," Wilson said in a recent interview. "Winning the league is not our priority this season. Our focus is on development—building a team, a culture, and a foundation that will stand the test of time."

For Wilson, success is measured not by immediate promotion but by the growth and progression of the squad. His five-season plan emphasises youth development, squad cohesion, and creating a sustainable model for the future.

"We’re not here for quick fixes," Wilson explained. "If we rush for promotion now, we risk undermining everything we’re trying to build. Development takes time, and that’s the path we’re committed to. Dortmund have had 5 seasons of mediocrity in the history books with the best finish being 16th, this isn’t good or what me or the board want"
Wilson’s philosophy requires patience, both from the club’s hierarchy and its passionate fanbase. He has emphasised that the real prize lies in creating a team capable of long-term success, rather than chasing short-term accolades.

"I understand the excitement and the desire to win," Wilson said. "But this is about something bigger. It’s about creating a system where success becomes inevitable because of the work we’ve put in."

Wilson has also worked to ensure that his players remain focused on the club’s vision, rather than being distracted by external expectations. By prioritising individual and collective development, he’s instilling a mindset that aligns with the club’s long-term goals.

"The players know what’s expected of them," Wilson said. "We’re building a culture of growth, where everyone understands that our focus is on the journey, not just the destination."

While many will continue to speculate about Dortmund’s chances of winning the league, Wilson’s message remains clear: development comes first. His calm and composed demeanour in the face of pressure sets the tone for a project that values sustainability over instant gratification.

For Borussia Dortmund, the future isn’t just about returning to the top—it’s about building a legacy that ensures they stay there. Under Wilson’s guidance, the club is on the right track, no matter how long it takes.

            Schalke 1 - 6 Borussia Dortmund

Like riding a bike! A storming performance away to Schalke, with the team firing on all cylinders. The players delivered a masterclass, scoring plenty of goals—no complaints here! While the squad could still use some trimming, this performance gave a few players a strong case to stick around, we shall see what happens.

Next up: a cup clash against Club Brugge. Onwards!

            Club Brugge 1 - 2 Borussia Dortmund

A good performance again although against another random but this time the scoreline was a narrow win, routine game tbh and easy enough matches to ease me back into things but with a few players rating up they will be moved on to reduce both squad size and wage bill as well as freeing up funds for future signings.
