Arsenal faced Everton at The Emirates, looking to bounce back after some poor form recently, and were boosted by Everton’s ongoing selection of Confais at DM who looked very nervous before the kick off. Marcao for one looked very disappointed to have been left out. Unsurprisingly, the Gunners opened the scoring through Werner in the 14th minute, when he leapt to perform a bicycle kick. Having gone behind, Everton decided to counter attack, and amazingly Lukaku hit the post just before half time. Darren Humphris reminded his men that ‘limbs would go missing’ if they came in at full time with anything less than 3 points, so 6 minutes after Pino made it 2-0 to the home side, which sparked an attacking approach from the Toffees. Memphis Depay, who actually won man of the match but maybe because he was alongside Confais, scored to peg Arsenal back to 2-1, and to immediately revert to counter-attacking again. 5 minutes alter and they were back on attack, and just after that the man that had gone missing since his minutes at the start of the season, Nathan Patterson, arrived from the Everton bench to weaken them further, along with Philippe. Arsenal countered the counter and the game drifted out to a home win - a valuable 3 points for Arsenal and the Everton circus continues - their fans were not happy, and we should expect to see the missiles out at Goodison next time out.
MOM: Memphis Depay (Everton)
Villa v West Ham was another claret and blue clash at Villa Park, both sides having been inconsistent so far this season. The Hammers were given an early boost when defender Toloi’s shot went through Lafont to take the lead. Villa attacked and West Ham defended well until the 74th minute when Gabriel Jesus connected with a volley from Raphina’s corner to equalise. Both sides settled for a point in a game which Villa had slightly the best of.
MOM: Gabriel Jesus (Aston Villa)
Blackburn hosted Sheffield Wednesday who can’t buy a win at the moment, and they got off to the perfect start with a long range shot from defender Starfelt to light up Ewood Park. 15 minutes later Joao Pedro halted the party with a beautiful lob over the keeper to equalise. Both sides had good chances to grab a winner, Wednesday with a penalty shout and Dumfries should have hit the target late on, but 1-1 it stayed in a result which will have suited Wednesday more than Rovers.
MOM: Carl Starfelt (Blackburn)
Cardiff were looking to stop a run of 4 straight defeats at home to the form team Barnsley. Mario Gotze produced a moment of magic to put the Bluebirds ahead with a free kick that hit the bar and Gotze followed up himself to head home with the keeper stranded. Barnsley did not look the team they have of late and Cardiff scored again just after the hour, Osborne finding Brekalo who scored with a delightful chip to make it 2-0. Barnsley’s problems were compounded when star striker Mitoma was sent off for his second yellow after a poor challenge on Lemar, and Zapata started the party in Wales with a spectacular overhead kick to make it 3-0 and a huge sigh of relief at Cardiff City Stadium
MOM : Duvan Zapata (Cardiff)
A London derby at Selhurst Park as Palace took on Watford who came in with 5 defeats on the bounce. This was not a game for the purists as both sides cancelled each other out. Watford lost defender Rrahmani early on to injury. Okoye was up to anything the Eagles had to throw at him, and Watford managed 1 shot on target as the game fizzled out to a 0-0 draw.
MOM : Kevin Vogt (Palace)
Leicester welcomed Chelsea to the Walkers Stadium, both sides hovering just outside the top 8. Chelsea gave Roberto Firmino his debut and his strike partner Saint-Maximin opened the scoring in the 7th minute for Chelsea to take the lead. 9 minutes later Aaron Wan-Bissaka sent a hush around the ground as he scored from outside the area to make it 2-0, running the full length of the pitch to celebrate. Chelsea dominated the game and were good value for the 3 points, but Steve Talbot will be annoyed with keeper Dean Henderson’s rash challenge in the last minute that gave Simeone the opportunity to pull one back from the spot and end 2-1 Chelsea
MOM : Alain Saint-Maximin (Chelsea)
Liverpool have had a run of big games and this time they were at the Etihad to take on Man City who have not been their usual dominating selves. Liverpool’s last 4 have been Man U, Everton in the derby, Arsenal and now Man City as Graeme Edwards finds out where his team really is. Another early goal here as Mahrez scored a superb individual effort to take the lead for the away team. City had an opportunity to restore parity when Jude Bellingham's goal bound shot was handballed on the line by Akanji, but Onana pulled off a wonder save from Vlahovic’s resultant penalty to keep it 1-0 Liverpool .The discontent in the stands was palpable as Mahrez again produced a moment of magic to make it 2-0 Liverpool at half time. City just never got going and the crowd became more restless as Onana and the Liverpool defence held firm and Edwards went home happy with 3 very valuable points and leapfrogging City to go 5th.
MOM: Riyad Mahrez (Liverpool)
A huge game at Old Trafford was the clash of the day as 3rd placed Man Utd hosted top of the table Leeds looking to peg the Whites back after their glorious start. Man Utd have looked stronger in recent weeks and had the perfect start when Adeyemi continued his impressive run of form to open the scoring after 3 minutes and Old Trafford went wild. On 8 minutes the same man produced a contender for goal of the season and Leeds were on the ropes. They looked beaten on 17 minutes when Andy Fati, possibly stung by recent media comments by boss Steve Outten, followed up his shot which hit the bar to make it 3-0 and Manchester was jumping. Infected by the atmosphere the Red Devils pressed forward, but 3-0 was how it stayed until half-time. At half-time, there was a little reluctance by the Leeds players to go down the tunnel but they were ushered along, and after various screeching, petrol engine, and haunting, scraping noises the Leeds players came out after the break, followed by a grim faced Tim Davey, removing a rubber apron. Whatever happened seemed to work, as Spinazzola pulled one back on 59 minutes, then Fekir popped up to make it 3-2. United dropped the defensive line but Leeds were on fire and Berardi completed an amazing comeback to stick one in the top corner and make it 3-3 and the Leeds fans made themselves heard. The absolute example of a game of two halves and a thrilling 3-3 draw. Steve Outten seems to have an argument with sub Jaden Slory as he replaced Kalvin Phillips and immediately subbed the sub with Saka as he showed his steel but he will see it as a win that slipped away, albeit against the league leaders.
MOM: Karim Adeyemi (Man Utd)
Newcastle, fresh from a fine victory at Spurs, took on beleaguered Burnley at St.James Park. Burnley edged the opening encounters until man of the moment James Ward-Prowse found space to finish just before half time to put the Geordies ahead.
Raul de Tomas limped off for Newcastle shortly after to be replaced by the less effective Torp. Both sides had plenty of opportunities, with Burnley actually creating more chances, but neither side could add the clinical finishing that they needed to break through further and 1-0 to Newcastle it stayed as the Magpies march on into 3rd
MOM: James Ward-Prowse (Newcastle)
Spurs looked to bounce back after last weeks defeat with another home game against Southampton. Before the game Spurs announced a triple swap with Barcelona to be completed after the game, which got the stadium asking a few questions after such a great start. 10 minutes in, and further questions were coming as Saints went ahead with a thundering volley from Victor Boniface. Tottenham kept going but had to wait until seconds before half time to get an equaliser, Bensebaini the unlikely scorer after a freak rebound from Jose Sa in the Saints goal. All square at half time but early in the second half, Ivan Perisic found Aaron Hickey who from right back had come forward and lobbed the keeper to give his side the lead. He jumped on Tim Brown and thanked him for allowing him to join Barcelona, only adding that he realised that it wouldn’t be for long in the revolving doors of the Camp Nou. Tottenham saw out the rest of the game relatively comfortably and narrowed the gap at the top to 4 points again in another terrific 3 points for the Lilywhites.
MOM : Aaron Hickey (Tottenham)
Team of the Week: Onana (Liverpool), Starfelt(Blackburn),Kamara(Watford), Hickey(Spurs), Vogt (Palace), Ward-Prowse (Newcastle), Pogba (Burnley), De Bruyne (Chelsea), Mahrez (Liverpool), Adeyemi (Man Utd), Zapata (Cardiff)
