At The Emirates, Arsenal were looking to push on and challenge Leeds at the summit. Southampton came with 3 former Gunners in their ranks, and fresh from a home win against Everton. Just before half time one of them, Alex Isak, pounced on a poor back pass to slot home and make it 1-0 to the away team, sending the home fans into silence. Arsenal never showed their cutting edge, and another Arsenal old boy Kulusevski popped up to score a goal reminiscent of Paul Gascoigne’s Euro 96 wonderstrike, as he flicked it over Gomez and ran round him to blast it home. As Isak and Kulusevski celebrated in front of the home fans, the Swede managed to injure himself and was taken off. Saints were not done yet, and with 11 minutes left Boniface scored despite the offside claims from Arsenal, and it was all done, 3-0 to the away team.
MOM : Robin Le Normand (Southampton)
At Villa Park, the two Midlanders were taking each other on as high flying Leicester came to visit. Villa looked particularly tentative and this wasn’t one for the purists. If anything Leicester did a little more than the home side, but chances were few and far between, and the game ended goalless. Villa lost Lascelles after 13 minutes to injury which didn’t help their case, but the game was not a collectors item, and both sides will take the point in the circumstances.
MOM : Nelson Semedo (Leicester)
Blackburn hosted Spurs at Ewood Park, who have started well, and again came to attack here. The Riversiders went in front though on 20 minutes when Sane found himself in space and scored with a cheeky nutmeg through Green’s legs to make it 1-0. This is how it stayed at half time as the Londoners failed to make an impact, and manager Tim Brown gave his men the hairdryer treatment at the break. They came out with more purpose, and between Kokcu and Williams created a wonderful goal which the latter scored, beating Majecki through the air to equalise. 9 minutes later Williams turned provider as he flicked on to Steve Bergwijn who hit a glorious half volley to put his side ahead. Williams has been on the bench for recent weeks and seemed to relish the starting opportunity, and it was he who made way for Perisic as the away side looked to solidify the win. He left to rapturous applause from the away end. It’s rare for Spurs to play and Leon Bailey not to score, so this was rectified in the 73 minute, and with a stunning volley which put the game to bed and sent Tottenham home with all 3 points.
MOM: Inaki Williams (Spurs)
Cardiff, punching well above, welcomed Palace to Wales this week, the Eagles fresh from a memorable home victory against Man City. This time they were on it again, and Daryl Dike popped up in the 11th minute to give the visitors the lead. Zapata equalised for the Bluebirds to make it 1-1 at half time and all to play for. Adama Traore of Palace is amongst the best in the division in terms of current form, and on 56 minutes he chased a ball over the top and managed an overhead kick which dipped at the last minute to drop into the net and give the Londoners all 3 points. Palace will be delighted with a win at a place not many have come away with anything.
MOM : Adama Traore (Palace)
Everton welcomed Chelsea to Goodison Park and Steve Talbot's men came with 4 up front and ready to attack. They were rewarded in the 7th minute when a huge error by David De Gea who came off his line way too early allowed Odegaard to chip him into an empty net. The first half was fairly even until Odegaard had a proper swing at Aouar and missed, and then Saint-Maximin went down injured and had to be replaced by Fred. Romelu Lukaku then popped up to equalise against his old club and it looked like 1-1 at half time. Again, de Gea had a nightmare and seemed to flap around for an age with Chiesa’s shot, but VAR ruled that it had crossed the line and the goal was given. 2-1 to Chelsea. The Everton keeper made a couple of great saves after the interval to redeem himself and then defender Marcao hit a screamer to equalise for the Toffees. Both keepers had their share of saves to make in a game full of chances, but the score draw was the outcome and a point each at Goodison
MOM: Federico Chiesa (Chelsea)
Leeds have bounced back strong after their only defeat and followed up their 3-0 victory at Spurs last week with a crushing victory over Burnley at Elland Road. Burnley were set up to counter, but the quality on display didn’t give them a chance. Berardi scored in the 9th after a flick on from Rudiger, then pounced on a Nkunku defensive lapse to double his tally, then Rudiger again put Osimhen through for Leeds third before half time. Moises Caicedo has been arguably the standout performer of the Premiership so far and the home midfielder hit a long range effort that crashed home on 68 minutes - “Can we play you every week” chanted the fans and 4 minutes later Victor Osimhen hit an even better long range effort to make it 5. With 12 minutes left Berardi found space, and hit one of those wicked snap benders to seal a magnificent win at 6-0 and a miserable trip home for the away fans
MOM : Domenico Berardi (Leeds)
The Kop was restless as Liverpool started their home game against Barnsley, as close to a ‘must win’ game for the Reds as you could get at this stage of the season. On 20 minutes the pressure was relieved a little as Halifa found Mbabu who scored with a decent finish on the angle. This is how it stayed until half time with the fans not exactly buoyant, but hoping for the win. Forlorn and Kheidira came on for the last half hour to shore things up and it certainly wasn’t as comfortable as he would have liked, but a wins a win for Graeme Edwards and it pulls them away from the bottom 3
MOM : Kevin Mbabu (Liverpool)
Man City were looking to come back from defeat at Crystal Palace last week with a home game against Newcastle. Both sides had early chances, but Rensch made the breakthrough for the home side, starting and finishing the move with a header. 5 minutes later the home side started to relax as Rovella caught out Strakosha to double the lead. And if they weren’t certain of all 3 points, up popped Bernard Silva a minute later with an astonishing strike to make it 3-0 , City keeping pace with Leeds. James Tarkowski pulled one back for the Magpies with a long range shot just on the stroke of half time but it looked very bleak for the away team, and City were patting themselves on the back. The home side substituted off Dias and Silva for squad players Magnino and Sohm to pick up a few minutes, and it was party time at. The Etihad. Newcastle hadn’t read the script though, and Canales cut the deficit to one 5 minutes into the half to give City some nervous moments. With 10 minutes left Newcastle defender Jonathan Clauss headed home for an amazing equaliser, and the shirts were off again as the comeback was complete. 3-0 to 3-3 and the Geordies went mad.
MOM : Marcos Llorente (Newcastle)
’A Slow start’ was Steve Outtens summary of his teams Premiership campaign so far, and visitors West Ham were an unpredictable prospect for the Red Devils. United started brightly and on the half hour Kalvin Phillips scored a superb volley to make it 1-0 to the home side. 2 minutes later and Cole Palmer was scoring the equaliser, his 7th of the season, and muttering in the Old Trafford stands. Half time saw Outten give his team a talking to and out they came strong, for Valverde to put them 2-1 up 4 minutes into the second half. Gavi found Phillips in space again with 6 minutes left and the midfielder scored his second to cap a magnificent personal and team performance - United are here to compete.
MOM : Kalvin Phillips (Man U)
Probably the man under most pressure this week was Mike Bradwell at Sheffield Wednesday. His side welcomed promoted Watford and the Owls had yet to register a point in the league. Wednesday looked confident though, and Zaniolo crossed for Ollie Watkins to hit a wonder goal after 13 minutes. Watford are battlers and 20 minutes on Embolo followed up his own shot that hit the bar to finish for the equaliser, and it stayed 1-1 up until the interval. Wednesday came out strong again and Zaniolo this time beat Hause with ease and smashed home to put the home side ahead. New Wednesday signing Kieran Tierney got forward to score a third for the Owls, and the home fans were singing again as they registered their first 3 points of the season.
MOM : Nicolo Zaniolo (Sheffield Wednesday)
Team of the Week:
De Gea (Everton), Dalot (Chelsea), Rudiger (Leeds), Le Normand(Southampton), Semedo(Leicester), Kokcu(Spurs),Zaniolo (Sheffield Wednesday) , Phillips (Man Utd) , Valverde (Man Utd), Berardi (Leeds), Osimhen(Leeds)
Performance Of The Week: Big win at Hillsborough for Sheffield Wednesday who have to take this for this round, beating Watford at home for their first 3 points of the season. Southampton and Leeds very much worthy of mentions
Shocker of the Week: This weeks its going to the Champions - 3-0 and cruising at home, couple of subs for minutes and it all went wrong for The Citizens - and it’ll probably be the only time they’ll be here!
