A London derby at The Emirates saw Arsenal take on Crystal Palace with Darren Humphris’s men looking to push on. Palace’s counter - attacking style played into the Gunners hands and after 12 minutes Pino got the opener to make it 1-0. Despite the change of tactic from Palace Arsenal were strong and Joe Gomez doubled the lead just a minute later to settle the nerves. The game was pretty much settled in the 26th minute, as Bentancur’s cross found Reece James whose header slipped through the keeper's grasp and made it 3-0 at half time. Despite Eberechi Eze missing an open goal, for which he was immediately hooked off, it was all Arsenal and stayed 3-0.
MOM : Sven Botman (Arsenal)
Barnsley at home to Chelsea saw The Blues travel up north without Dean Henderson between the sticks, and with Ant Harris’s men proving the pundits wrong as they keep picking up points. We expected goals, and goals we got - Mitoma of Barnsley has been lethal this season and opened the scoring in the 3rd minute for the home side. Lahmadi made it 2-0 in the 9th minute and Ratti between the Chelsea sticks looked like he was in for a long day. 4 minutes later, the Slovakian Haraslin scored and it was 3-0 with the Tykes in wonderland. Tomiyasu pulled one back for the Pensioners, but again Lahmadi restored the 3 goal advantage 7 minutes later - 22 minutes in and we had seen 5 goals! The game was effectively won just 2 minutes later, Haraslin scoring a contender for goal of the season to make it 5-1 which concluded the first half scoring. Chelsea boss Steve Talbot had strong words with his men at half time and they came out stronger - Odegaard the provider for Saint-Maximin to pull one back, with a wonderful strike, and Odegaard himself with a delightful chip with 15 minutes to go to make it 5-3. Chelsea kept on knocking on the door with De Bruyne prominent and had twice the attempts on goal as their opponents, but the lack of a top keeper cost them here as the Barnsley wagon keeps on rolling.
MOM : Odegaard (Chelsea)
Blackburn hosted surprise package Cardiff in a tight game at Ewood Park with both sides playing 5 at the back and chances few and far between. Matt Rose’s men have been outstanding in the Prem so far,m and Gotze gave them the lead just before half time to go in 1-0 up. Mo Salah has been a big part of the Blackburn story so far this season, and he popped up with another crucial goal, rounding the Cardiff keeper to slot home on the hour and equalise. With very few chances on offer this was how it stayed - Cardiff had 5 bookings as they took no prisoners, but both sides settled for a point after previous game defeats.
MOM : Mario Gotze (Cardiff)
Everton welcomed Newcastle to Goodison, with goals expected as the Magpies have been in fine form in front of goal. Everton manager David Gooch tried the ten men selection trick again and there was no sign of Nathan Patterson. It was the Toffees that struck first, Aouar hitting a half volley that screamed past the keeper and put the home side 1-0 up after 5 minutes. Memphis Depay doubled the lead, at which Gooch immediately parked the bus, and Newcastle laid siege to the home goal. Within 5 minutes Jonathan David pulled one back, but then Mowatt made it 3-1 on 31 minutes. The bus came back out and despite 21 attempts on goal to 11, Newcastle came away with nothing here and Everton picked up a welcome second win
MOM : Memphis Depay ( Everton)
Top of the table Leeds took on Leicester at Elland Road with the home fans bouncing as they expected another 3 points. Leeds had a 100% record going into this game, but the Foxes have made a cunning start, and they took the lead through KAsper Dolberg who has been the subject of transfer speculation this week - his shot swerved all over the place before hitting the bar and in past Allison. Tim Davey rarely needs an excuse to attack, and this was the blue touchpaper. Chance after chance came to the Leeds side, but it was only with 6 minutes to go to the interval that they finally broke through, Fekir heading past Areola to equalise. 1-1 at half time and confidence restored amongst the home faithful. Leicester hadn't read the script today, and Sequeira restored their lead whilst nutmegging the Leeds keeper just after the break to make it 2-1 Leicester, and Kante scored again to make it 3-1 and silence Elland Road. The fans started to leave the stands when Simeone made it 4-1 on the hour and despite Spinazzola pulling one back it was another massive win for Leicester on the road and albeit after only 5 games puts them right in the mix at the top. Another game where the team in dominance came second.
MOM : Anthony Elanga (Leicester)
Liverpool hosted Southampton at Anfield, both sides looking to climb the table after mediocre starts. Liverpool boss Graeme Edwards went all out attack with 4 up front to start, and 16 minutes in, Mudryk rewarded his ambition with the opener. Mudryk again followed up with a brilliant volley on 35 minutes and it was 2-0 going in at half time. Both sides had chances in the second half but the Reds looked strong and held on for another 3 points and some relief for the home fans
MOM : Andy Robertson (Liverpool)
Champions Man City faced Aston Villa, both sides only having one defeat before the game and in 3rd and 4th respectively. The home side had to wait until the 25th minute before breaking the deadlock, Foden’s pass to Kane and a pile driver from outside the area made it 1-0 City. Gabriel Jesus then broke free for Villa but was brutally hacked down by Bernardo Silva. The ref immediately showed red, and City were down to 10. Dusan Vlahovic however doubled the lead on the half hour and it was 2-0 at half time. City consolidated the lead, but ill discipline cost them again as Ederson conceded a penalty which Martinez converted to make it 2-1 with 9 minutes to go. The home side had enough to hold on with 10 men in a game that was very even. Villa had plenty of possession but could not find the final killer ball to get anything from this game.
MOM : Phil Foden (Man City)
Man Utd took on new boys Watford, manager Steve Outten issuing a ‘no panic’ message last week after defeat at Chelsea as the vultures circled, but Watford have been a tricky proposition for most so far. United had the perfect start through Kalvin Phillips who scored after a minute to send the Old Trafford faithful wild. Watford don't seem to care much for big teams' reputations and Louza scored a great goal to equalise and shock the Red Devils on 33 minutes. At the break it was 1-1 and some muttering in the stands - but Pedro Porro eased concerns 6 minutes later with a quality strike to make it 2-1 and surely this was the 3 points for United. United kept on attacking and really should have converted at least one of their chances, which left them open with 2 minutes to go for a long ball forward from Hall to sub Davis who scored to equalise for the Hornets. United fans let their team down by firing missiles onto the pitch and the game was stopped whilst they were apprehended and ejected, and there was an air of frustration around Old Trafford. Another 2 points dropped and 2-2 at the final whistle.
MOM : Federico Valverde (Man Utd)
Pointless Sheffield Wednesday took on Spurs who have started very well, and who paraded new signings Podence and Eder Militao who came in from Fiorentina. Wednesday had Kieron Tierney in for his debut who arrived from Barcelona in mid week. The Owls had a good penalty shout on 3 minutes that was turned down, and Spurs dominated the first half after that. When a team is down on its luck, the last thing it needs is a sending off, and Martin de Roon seemed to be on a mission to find out where the line was - on 29 minutes he clattered Bergwijn and plucked up a yellow, and then a horrible tackle on Podence saw him receive his second yellow on 37 minutes, both of which could have been straight reds. Scott Hogan then pulled up injured for the home side and then they made an odd substitution, Mkhitaryan on for Zaniolo, which still left 3 at the back. Wednesday held on admirably, but after Leon Bailey was pushed forwards and Inaki Williams came on the Spurs side managed to snatch the winner through Bailey’s 7th of the season. Wednesday had a couple of late chances for a point, but ultimately Spurs held on for a very solid, un Spursy win.
MOM : Leon Bailey (Spurs)
An all claret and blue affair at London Stadium where West Ham took on Burnley in a game where the two sides probably needed points more than any of the other teams on parade - one win each for either side going into the game was not great for teams who finished 5th and 8th last season.. Another early goal, as Kudus scored with a spectacular bicycle kick in the first minute to shock the home fans. Dejan Lovren is not known for his goal scoring prowess, but every dog has his day, and he hit an outrageous volley to equalise and give the home fans some hope. Cole Palmer then scored a wonder goal for the Hammers to make it 2-1 not long before half time, and despite a game with a total of 44 chances, and very evenly spread, there was no further score and West Ham came away with 3 points
MOM : Kudus (Burnley)
Team of the Week: Areola (Leicester), Botman (Arsenal), Robertson (Liverpool), Akanji (Liverpool), Edgar (Barnsley), Odegaard (Chelsea) , Gotze (Cardiff), Elanga (Leicester), Bailey (Spurs), Asprilla (Arsenal) , Palmer (West Ham)
Performance of the Week: Has to be Leicester winning at Leeds and ending the 100% record - The Foxes have taken the Premiership by storm and keep on upsetting the odds
Shocker of the Week: A lot of sides dominated and couldn’t get the win this week, but the most disappointed will probably be Newcastle, after their defeat at Everton despite having double the chances of the home side.
