Premiership Round Up - R1
After a long close season the teams took the pitches again for the opening day of battle and here we look at some of the stories that came out on the day;
Two new managers met at Oakwell, with Ant Harris taking on Keith Drummond as Barnsley took on Villa. Both teams were at full strength, and the Midlanders dominated, scoring through Gabriel Jesus, who was off the mark on his debut. As soon as we had the restart Drummond decided to park the bus and made sure that the 3 points went back down the road to Villa.
Final score - Barnsley 0 Villa 1 , MOM J Sutalo (Villa)
Newly promoted Leicester had a tough trip away to Burnley and the experience of Simon Hill, and this looked like a tall order for Darren Lear's men. Hill set up in a European style, clearly expecting the counter attack, and business as usual at Turf Moor was resumed when Kudus put them in front on 22 minutes. 1-0 at half time and looking comfortable, Burnley looked sure to secure the 3 points, for Simeone to equalise for Leicester just before the hour mark. The home side instantly responded through De_Jong to restore the fans confidence, but again Lear's men fought back and Sequeira stormed forward from left back to hit another equaliser. Not to worry though, up stepped Paul Pogba with 7 minutes left to put the Clarets ahead again and seemingly home and dry. Leicester threw on Musa who with his first touch found Ferran Torres who hit an outrageous lob to score the equaliser, and then Lewis Dunk had a moment of madness and found himself on the end of a Torres pass, which he hit first time to give the Foxes the away win and all 3 points - an amazing result for the new boys having been behind 3 times and scoring 4 on their their first game in the Prem.
Final score - Burnley 3 Leicester 4 MOM - Torres (Leicester)
Chelsea were hot favourites for this tie, and a chance for Steve Talbot to show us what he can do win the Premiership. With a tactical advantage the home side massively dominated the Eagles, but there was nothing to show for the 20 shots of which 10 were on target. Odegaard, Saint-Maximin and Chiesa all had good chances, but the Palace defence held firm, with Livakovic in the away goal their star performer. Chelsea will need to show more potency in front of goal in order to progress this season.
Final score - Chelsea 0 Palace 0 MOM - Dominik Livakovic
Few could have forgiven David Gooch for setting up defensively against the free-scoring Leeds , but he puzzled a few with his selection, playing Patterson and Philippe in particular over Savic and Carrasco which had the home fans already questioning his approach. Sadly it was underlined by a poor performance, with Leeds putting 5 past David de_Gea, new signing Berardi scoring twice with Osimhen, Fekir and Caicedo completing the rout.
Final score - Everton 0 Leeds 5 MOM - Moises Caicedo
Two new managers again at Anfield, Graeme Edwards in the home dugout and Tony Ayre leading the away team. Mo Salah, for so long such a hero at this ground, shocked the home fans in the 4th minute with a nutmeg on Forlin and a great finish to score early on. Blackburn reverted to long ball and Liverpool huffed and puffed but never realy found a way through, Mahrez coming on for the academy find Halifa couldn't change things and Rovers hung on for a memorable victory. Keeper Majecki was Rovers man of the match, thwarting Rashford, Mudryk and Guirassy
Final score - Liverpool 0 Blackburn 1 MOM Radoslaw Majecki
The big one - Man Utd who came 2nd in the Premiership last season looked to have a fairly straightforward first game against underperfomers Spurs. New manager Tim Brown put out an attacking line up against the Red Devils, but Bukayo Saka put the Red Devils ahead after 2 minutes which looked like it could be the start of the floodgates. The away side kept on attacking though, and equalised through new signing Leon Bailey who lobbed De Ligt before smashing past Oblak. Adeyemi put Man U back in front but there was an instant reposnse from Inaki Williams, and then 7 minutes later Bailey hit his second to put Tottenham ahead. Brown then asked Szoboszlai to play DM which he looked about as comfortable as it is to remember how to spell his name when sheeting, before being replaced by Kokcu who seemed to have a slightly better idea. Stephen Bergwijn shook off the transfer rumours linking him with a move away from White Hart Lane, to tie up a remarkable win on the 67th minute. Despite the surprise result, Spurs dominated this game and were well worth the 3 points. Whether they can surprise teams like this again consistently is another question entirely.
Final Score - Man Utd 2 Spurs 4 MOM Leon Bailey
At Hillsborough last year Wednesday battled bravely to avoid relegation - they probably didn't really want to face Arsenal first! However, 10 minutes in and the Owls were singing as Hal Calhanoglu produced a moment of magic to put them 1-0 up. Arsenal clicked into gear straight away though, and equalised through debutant Kubo and then Werner who put them 2-1 up at half-time. Werner sealed the deal in the second half to win the game 3-1 for the away team.
Final Score - Sheffield Wednesday 1 Arsenal 3 MOM Timo Werner
Southampton have a far stronger squad than their league position last season suggested , so the fans were expecting more this season, especially with new signings Isak, Kulusevski and Fernandez on parade. The fans were not dissapointed, as Kulusevski scored after 6 minutes, Martinelli, Isak and Boniface making it 4-0 at 30 minutes and effectively game over. Jonathan David pulled one back before half time, but it was all over by then and the home side hung on for a great opening day win
Final Score - Southampton 4 Newcastle 1 MOM Martinelli
Two promoted sides met each other at Vicarage Road, and it was a cagey affair with neither side wishing to go too attacking - Embolo put the Hornets ahead but Lemar equalised in the second half to result in an honorable draw. Both sides will have wanted more, but it is a point on the board in their Premiership challenge which they will both take.
Final Score - Watford 1 Cardiff 1 MOM Breel Embolo
At Upton Park, the champions were in town to play the Hammers. West Ham started with 3 t the back, a bold move, which looked dangerous as Vlahovic opened the scoring on 3 minutes for City. Harry Kane doubled the lead on 7 minutes, and was instantly substituted which he looked in a right fluffery buffery about, making way for the defensive midfielder Rovella - who himself scored just after half time to make it 3-0. West Ham came back in the second half to score twice, through Silva and Thiago, but it was too little too late and the Sky Blues march on again.
Final Score - West Ham 2 Man City 3 MOM Isco
