When the draw was made for the Quarter Finals of the EFL Cup, a couple of ties stood out with one being Inter Milan hosting fellow Italian club Juventus.
With a ticket to the semi finals on the line, it would see a proud Italian team and Inter Milan face off in a heated battle of teams with outspoken managers.
Inter Milan’s Gary Wilson had tasted victory in the team’s league meeting with the hosts cruising to a 3-0 victory over Juventus but could they repeat that achievement?
Juventus came into the game on the back of a crushing victory over league leaders PSG so confidence would be high, however, confidence may have been their downfall in the game against Inter earlier in the season as the Old Lady took Milan lightly and were punished for it.
This time, Juventus were ready. More of the same of what toppled PSG in their previous game and Inter did their best to match up to that.
A quick 1-2 from striker Joao_Felix on 3 & 13 minutes put the visitors in complete control of the game, but with 77 minutes left to play, could Wilson lift his players for a memorable comeback?
In short, no. Despite some tactical changes eventually on the 60th minute, Inter Milan never looked like threatening the Juventus goal and a game of few chances went the way of the clinical Juventus.
Juventus will now face either Borussia Dortmund, AS Monaco or PSG in the semi finals. The draw is expected soon.
We spoke to Juventus manager Andy Banks to get his reaction to the win:
“It’s a big win for myself and the lads against a team that demolished us a few weeks ago. The EFL Cup has been a competition in which we’ve struggled in so to make it to the semi final is a step forwards for us.
The boys played really well today and that fast, clinical start was exactly what we needed to take control of the game.
There wasn’t much in the game so us taking our chances then limiting Inter to a few as we did was key.
Did we expect Inter to come at us all guns blazing? Of course. It’s what their manager does in conversation if you have an opinion that is different to his, but they never really looked dangerous.
It’s been a relatively easy route so far but it’s going to get tougher at some point if/when we draw PSG so we’ll enjoy this win and then focus on our next game.”
