  • Stade Rennais Matchday

    Rennes limp to Salzburg Defeat
Red Bull Salzburg 2-0 Stade Rennais

Two first half goals were enough for Red Bull Salzburg to inflict a first defeat of Drew Hill's reign.
It was the French side's second defeat of the season but the first since the arrival of their new manager.
Despite the positivity off the field over the last few days it became clear that there is much work to be done on the field.

FALLING SHORT: Rennes were below par in defeat to Red Bull Salzburg last night.

The home side had the better of the opening half an hour and were rewarded with the opening goal for Koita.
That spurred Hill's side into action and they created a couple of chances, including hitting the post.
The killer blow came immediately after the break when Piatkowski doubled Salzburg's lead from the first attack

FRUSTRATION: Drew Hill was a frustrated figure on the sidelines throughout.

With the safety cushion of the second goal the home side changed to a defensive strategy, not too dissimilar to the tactics Stade Rennais employed against Villarreal last week.
Unlike that match, where Villarreal scored two injury time goals to level the game, there were no late heroics.
Instead Rennes limped to a disappointing defeat which will only show the size of Hill's task in the Roazhon Park hotseat.

TACTICAL RETHINK?: Hill and his coaching team reflect on the result in Austria

    "
This is not the kind of game we want to experience too often" Hill said afterwards.
"There were positive signs and these are early days but I don't want to sound like a cliche machine.
"We want to demand high standards as a club and we didn't reach those today.
"Credit, of course, to Salzburg. They did what they needed to do and we didn't have an answer"
The positives for the Red and Blacks is that there will be no time to dwell on the defeat.
They will already be on their way back to Brittany to prepare for tomorrow's cup tie with PSV Eindhoven

Late defeat ends mixed first week for Hill
    Stade Rennais 0-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt heaped misery on their old boss with a winning goal with the last kick of the game.
It was another disappointing league result for the French side, yet to register a league win since Hill's arrival at the club.

NOT AGAIN: Another sickening late goal hurts Stade Rennais

No doubt Drew Hill would have been eager for a win last night to justify his move away from the German club.
Instead he watched on as his old employers claimed victory in the cruelest of ways.
The former Frankfurt boss was already frustrated enough as his side created multiple chances but were unable to get their shots on target.
They paid the ultimate price when Nikolas Fullkrug scored the winning goal in the 95th minute.

After the game Hill claimed that his administration staff had handed out the wrong team instructions which affected his side's performance.
But that does not change the fact that his side now sit just one point off the very bottom of the table after a disastrous start to their league campaign.

"Here we are again" said Hill after the match
"Another match where we keep ourselves in the game but throw it away at the end.
"This one was probably the most frustrating because we wasted so many chances.
"To come away without even a goal is hard to take and not something the fans will he happy with.
"The administration thing is annoying but I don't want to dwell on that because ultimately we lost this game with poor shooting, nothing else."

The saving grace for Hill is the Breton side's cup form.
Wednesday's entertaining 3-2 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the EFL cup saw them through to the third round.
They were rewarded with a very winnable home tie against Hibernian which will already have fans dreaming of a run to the late stages and a tie against one of the big boys.

Hill added: "We're going to stay positive.
"Last night was disappointing but we showed against PSV on Wednesday what we are capable of.
"We will look to continue that against Hibernian and see who comes up next.
"We all aspire to reach a higher level so it would be nice to draw a big team, if we can get past the next round.
"We don't belong at the bottom of the table and we know we have the quality to move upwards.
"Things can only get better from here"
