  • EFL - what happened

With 8 games to go the EFL title race is closing to an end with just a few hurdles and the home straight to go. The season kicked off with Real Madrid and PSG expected to go head to head for the title with Roma, Juventus and Atletico Madrid the best of the rest.

Real Madrid are very much in the title hunt. Only 2 games ago most punters were writing them off but roll on two games and Real have reached the summit albeit on goal difference.
Real have had an astonishing 644 shots on opponents goals at an average of 21.47 per game. Add to that the fact that Real are the 3rd most clinical side in the league scoring every 6.71 shots and its easy to see how they have simply bludgeoned their way to 96 goals. A positive shot count of +282

Juventus have been the surprise title challengers who not only have come out of the pack but have been leading the league for large parts of the season. Its been done with efficiency at both end of the field as they are the most clinical side in the league scoring every 6.44 shots with their positive shot count quite tame at +89. Their goalkeeper has been in stunning form and is leading the league for keeping shots out conceding at 10.78 shots per game. The ratio of -4.34 sees Juventus at the top of the "esms gods luck charts" by a country mile.

Paris St Germain in many peoples minds are the best side in FFO so what has gone wrong this season. 11 points adrift of the summit their league season has been one of frustration for the french fans. A positive shot count of +216 would suggest they should be in the top-2. The statistics at both ends of the field (5th best shooters/3rd best GK) are good so statistically PSG have been pretty good so its hard to see why they are so far behind.

Atletico Madrid are right down in 8th place at present. Statistics say they should be higher with a positive shot count of +145 but their goalkeeper has had a poor season conceding at 7.76 shots per goal. There is still time to improve but the team need more from Martinez.

Roma boss Hamza has come in for some criticism this season for the alarming drop off in form that sees the club drop from title challengers to 10th in the league. Statistics do show Roma to be by far the unluckiest side of the better paper teams. Scoring goals at 10.14 shots perhaps tells Hamza he shouldnt have sold off the top strikers so early. A positive shot count of +84 into a -2 goal difference does cast a dirty look at the esms gods though.

Improving every season (since GS left) Inter Milan have taken the most advantage and are currently in third place and have also enjoyed good cup success. They do have the fourth highest positive shot count of +121. Can Inter sneak into the title race? Not likely with 9 points the difference. Inters goal will be to try and stay in third spot.
