RB Salzburg has made two big commitments to strengthen the Red Bull Academy at Salzburg in two different announcements this week. Club manager Dave Thacker had been pointing towards these moves since the end of last seasons. Thacker described the decision process that RBS went through to make these moves.
“When I joined the club at the start of last season, we weren’t bankrupt, but we also were limited in the moves we could make to improve things. We made one signing (Djoco) and it probably wasn’t the right one. As we started into the season, we found ourselves slowly losing money as our payroll was more than our income. That immediately shut down any ideas of signing another player for cash. The minimum bids and the pre-season and mid-season auction were well above our balance, and the trades that were offered might have helped one area, but would hurt another. So no deals were made.
We knew that the league was looking to allow expansion of the academy system so we saved all of our cash to make that our aim. In the meantime, we had the opportunity to expand our stadium and we jumped at that. The income we made last season went into the stadium, a new scout, and a new academy player. This sets us on the path to developing more of our own talent and not having to rely on a transfers system that in my opinion is out of reach from a club like ours.”
RBS is expected to bring a Defender and Attacking Midfielder into the Academy this season and the skills of a veteran scout should bring better academy prospects going forward. Supporters are looking forward to seeing the two players that will be available to transfer to the main club: Keeper S_Given and Forward R_Ruiz. Both have the potential to join the club in a at the end of next season.
RBS will again be saving Euros this season for more improvements after next season. Stadium, Scouts and expanding the coaching staff are still being considering. Thacker is ready for more changes. “ If we are to succeed in this league, we have to keep up with the our competitors and get ahead of them wherever we can.”
