No Extension Contract Yet for Salzburg’s Thacker

Unofficial word from ownership indicates that RBS Salzburg manager Dave Thacker is unlikely to be offered an extension to his current three year contract. Ownership is not impressed with the current 17th in the table. There is hope for a better place at the end of season but at that isn’t making ownership happy. “Thacker came with a lot of grand plans” said the official, “but they are not panning out.” Officials point to two serious deficiencies in Thacker’s performance.

    Deal or No Deal
As part of his contract, Thacker has full control over signings and trades. His very first deal was to sign O_Djoco, who was probably the equivalent A_Schlager. Djoco was probably not where Thacker should have put his money. Salzburg needs another attacker to complement Koita and Nene. Failing that, some kind of every you midfield would be welcome. Since that signing, Salzburg has looked at several other attacking and midfield prospects, but the the club is reluctant to draw down their accounts by paying market prices. Since that time Thacker has embraced the ideas of expanding the stadium and expanding the academy. Either Schlager or Djoco may be dealt in order to fully fund that tactic.

    So Defenders are Important?
Thacker waltzed into the Salzburg job with an offensive mindset. He was expecting to have the scoring power from his young midfield and attackers to be able punch his way through the season. It’s been said that no battle plan survives contact with the enemy, and Thacker’s lineups were no exception. The tactics were an absolute disaster. After a promising 7 points in 4 games, the next 13 rounds yielded 11 losses, 1 draw, and meager single win. Things got so bad that Thacker consulted with some of the elders in the Senior league to find out what was wrong. “That was a black part of the season”, said Thacker. “I could feel the joy of the game being pulled right out this young club.”. Critics point to Thacker’s stale tactics and inability to understand the EFL2 game. Certainly the fish out of water was gasping for some winning oxygen. Major tactics shift were made. After the 18th round it looked like Salzburg had righted the ship and started to post wins again. The current form shows 2-2-2 for the last six and one of those was steal from top of the table Sevilla. Still, detractors still point to the ghastly -16 goal differential and wonder what could have been if Thacker had reacted more quickly.

While the contracted extension has not been offered, Thacker still has time to turn things around. Moving up a bit of the table, and hitting mid-table next season would probably keep him in Salzburg for the foreseeable future. He’s not looking into several openings that have crossed his wire. He might be there for a long time.
