  • The esms gods are crazy

Football management can be a frustrating occupation. The esms gods come and go with no real consistency. If you are on the right side of the gods then all is good. If you are on the wrong side then the laptop is at risk of heading to the nearest canal.
When it comes to domestic goals conceded per shots the statistics this season are truly outstanding. The unsustainable statistics of Ac Milan are going the "wrong way" as the Italians dream of achieving the unthinkable. Over 50 shots now needed to break the force field that they seemingly have employed this season. In a normal season the statistics from Lisbon, PSG and Roma would be seen as bizarre but even their extraordinary goal-line is dwarfed by Milans.

For Atletico its been a hard season in their own penalty box. Nearly every shot appears to go in but Leverkusen are even worse although they have a 23-rated goalkeeper. Manager Simon Marsh commented "Its just absolutely mental this season. We have conceded far less shots to our opposition than the majority of sides but everything they hit flies in. Between 7-8 shots per goal is the normal. We are completely deflated in a season that is turning into a relegation dog-fight.

Reporter: “Mr Hopton, yet again Simon Marsh has been talking down your teams performances this season, calling it “luck of the gods”, what is your take on that?”

Hopton: “When your keeper only faces 71 shots, you will concede less goals, it’s that simple, 5 shots per game. Atletico meanwhile have faced 111 shots, that’s 8 per game.

Now, I don’t want to talk primary school maths to Simon, but if you concede more shots per game, you are likely to concede more goals.

So, rather than try and work out why I should be failing, maybe he needs to look at his own squad to work out why they are failing.

In our recent match up with Atletico we restricted them to only 2 shots on target. If he can improve that statistics, he might find himself climbing the league.

I’ll give him that advice for free, but if he wants further tips I charge per hour.”

Hopton has spent a few days contemplating the numbers put out by fellow EFL manager, Simon Marsh, and has decided to dismiss them as fake news.

50 shots to beat Ter Stegen in goal? Yet 63 saved and 8 conceded gives a difference story. That’s a goal conceded for every 9 shots he has faced. No doubt a good number, but a far cry from Marshys fictional data.

Atletico meanwhile are struggling with a goal conceded every 5 shots taken, Musso is however facing 8 shots per game, Ter Stegen however is only facing 5 shots per game. So that clearly needs to be factored into it.

Now we can have a look at second place PSG. They are conceding a goal for every 11 shots faced, a stunning number. But are also facing 8 shots per game.

So, the luckiest team so far this season are PSG, I imagine that will run out. Milan meanwhile are benefiting from a strong defence, not an overpowered keeper.

Unfortunately there are too many false stats being used to try and manipulate teams into playing certain tactics. Milan will continue marching.

The statistics are taken directly from each game report.

“Attempts on goal” being the stat used.

Total number of attempts on Ac Milan goal / number of goals conceded - in league games only

      101/2

      goalkeeper stats are inaccurate

Hopton: “I am extremely disappointed that Simon Marsh has used other teams ineptitude to inflate his stats.

If I team can’t get their shots on target how is my goalkeeper supposed to concede?

This is nonsense and will not be tolerated by the AC Milan board, a formal complaint will be circulated to the FFO committee to see that manipulated stats are not used to play down the current position of Milan.”
