Cursed by a broken laptop I’ve persevered and have returned to give you my take and the tumultuous EFL2 season. We have clubs accelerating , clubs trying to overtake, clubs that are being ridden into a ditch, and a few that are accidents that make you look away. Let’s check out the action.
Pulling away: Benfica Mr. Hughes have already posted double digit wins, and only two losses. This club looks like it’s built to go the distance. The goals for on the beauty are leading the league, even though none of the players are in the top five in goal scoring. Talk about distributing the load!
Trying to get there: Wolfsburg Porto and Shaktar. This trio trying to keep the pace. Wolfsburg’s last three draws look like a scene for “A Series of Unfortunate Events” and they need to be back to their winning ways. Porto has fallen off the top after only booking 5 points in six games. The engine may be sputtering. Shakhtar is moving up with 12 points in six games. Watch for a position change by the halfway point.
The Midfield: Feyenoord, Liepzig, Ajax, Atalanta, Berlin: Untimely losses have pulled these clubs back from the top two tiers. However Atalanta’s is really making some ground. 14 point in six game is the strongest of any these five clubs. Better things may be in Atalanta’s future! If Berlin could put streak of 3 or 4 matches with points, they could be there too. They win a couple and then the engine misfires.
Getting Lapped : Dortmund, Lyon, Lazio, Valencia, Bilbao: There is trouble ahead for some of these clubs. Valencia has not won in the last six. Lazio has only won once. This is the part of the field where negative goal differentials are starting to show like a leaky tire (or is that tyre?). It will take better performances to get up to the Midfield. Lyon and Dortmund have the best chance to get there.
Not Mechanically Sound: Betis, Rennes, Schalke, PSV Out of this group of backfiring jalopies, only Betis have two wins in six games. The rest have put out just one. Not much horsepower here. Rennes looked good for a while, but has now dropped four in a row. PSV is looking down a Salzburg and shuddering (They play in round 16). Some offense needs to be found to get these clubs down the track.
The Pits: Salzburg and Sparta They are not quite on blocks, but the chief engineers of these clubs need a talking to. Only one win each. No wins in the last 6 rounds. Brennan has left the building and who knows why Thacker is still in his building, or why Salzburg hangs on to him. Supposedly a rebuild is underway, but RBS will probably not make it out of P19.
That’s it for now. Only four rounds to the halfway point, where I will summarize each club's performance and make some outrageous projections of the winners and playoff teams in EFL2.
Until then, drive safely.
