FFO manager merry-go-round
The ever changing landscape of FFO has once again shifted this off season with several big name clubs looking for new managers from Bayern Munich, to Celtic, to Borussia Dortmund and the latest in the list of clubs who have lost their managers; Real Madrid.
So far we’ve seen Sam Bradwell leave FC Barcelona after just 1 full season in charge of the club opting to move to former club Athletic Bilbao in EFL 2.
Bradwell has had previous stints with the club where it was said that he left due to the strict transfer policy at the club, a policy that now suits the family man.
With a hole to fill in Barcelona, up stepped Argentine Matias Finkelstein who seems to be following Bradwell from job to job as he took over Sam at Celtic and now after just 1 season with the Scottish side moves once again to Spain.
This will make it 4 teams in 4 seasons for Finkelstein after such a long spell with AC Milan as he’s moved to Ajax, Celtic and now FC Barcelona. Perhaps in his later years he likes to move around a lot more than in previous years.
While this club didn’t lose their manager after the season had ended, another big club in freefall are Borussia Dortmund after long serving manager Niall Grimes left the club by mutual consent with just a couple of games remaining in the last season. Dortmund went on to be relegated to EFL 2 however they’re strong favourites alongside Lazio to return at the first time of asking.
Chelsea manager Steven K Talbot has taken a caretaker position with the club in order to guide them into the new season and prepare the club & squad for their next full time manager.
Another long serving manager in Germany was Jon Banks at Bayern Munich, however Banks is no more in Munich as the 43 year old Englishman left the club he’d spent 9 years at in favour of his former team Norwich City who were crying out for help. Since then Banks’ position at Carrie Road has been under increasing doubt as it seems Banks may see this next season out without a club to manage.
In the wake of the news that Banks would leave Bayern Munich, the board searched high and low for his replacement and they landed on former Barnsley manager Ant Harris as the Australian finally gets his crack at a top team and will look to build upon what he’s been left behind.
A number of caretaker managers have also been appointed, with some having their deals renewed with said clubs after previously being with them last season;
Real Sociedad - Todd Fortune
Monaco - Mike Bridge
Napoli - Tony Ayre
Sheffield_United - Dave Thacker
Feyenoord - Ray Wallace
Luton Town - Neil Kirby
Stoke City - Darren Lear
RB Leipzig - Gary Windebank
Schalke 04 - Simon Hill
Shakhtar Donetsk - Steve Outten
Watford - Chris Spero
Bayer Leverkusen - Freddie Kaye
PSV - Tim Brown
Porto - John Read
Dortmund - Steve Talbot
Bristol City - Emlyn Brennan
Bournemouth - Simon Marsh
Celtic - Andy Babbs
Ipswich - Jason Hopton
Valencia - Alfredo Gandarlos
Finally we come to discuss the bombshell that is Ian Greaves announcing his departure from EFL 1 Champions Real Madrid with immediate effect just weeks before the start of the new season.
It’s thought that Greaves was originally planning to have 1 last season with Madrid however unknown factors have changed his mind and he has reached an agreement with the club to end his contract with immediate effect.
At the point of writing the following have applied for the vacant role at the club:
Jason Fortune of Sporting Lisbon
Keith Drummond of Aston Villa
Freddie Kaye of Birmingham City
Jason Hopton of Wolfsburg
Matias Finkelstein of FC Barcelona
5 strong candidates in one way or another and after asking our viewers to vote on who they want to see in the Real Madrid hot seat, here are the results:
Jason Fortune 14%
Keith Drummond 28%
Freddie Kaye 33%
Jason Hopton 18%
Matias Finkelstein 7%
Obviously our viewers don’t decide these things but it’ll be interesting to see who does land the role and what they’ll look to do with the back to back EFL 1 champions.
