Well, the fat lady is warming up. She’ll be singing after a few playoff games. A bit off key, but that’s life in EFL2. A life that by beloved Salzburg will continue to languishing in, but we’ll talk about that later. Let’s go congratulations the winners.
1. Marseille, 68 points, 20 8 10 Ponder the fact that after 12 round Marseille was in 8th place, had a losing records and had only managed 5 points out of 6 games. I mentioned that in one of the early whip-around that they had lost their desire. That was definitely not the case. After round 18, they were back in 5th, by round 30 they were back in second, and they never stopped. They were seven point clear at the finish line. They had top three performers in assists, tackles, and passes. Zubimendi was a wonder for this squad. They will make some noise back in the top league.
2. Real Sociedad, 61 points 17 10 11. The White and Blue stayed in the top half in most of the season, but slipped back to 8th at round 12. They found their footing, but could not keep up with Marseilles's torrid pass. As Villarreal slipped off the top, they tried to make a move but ended tied with Villa on points. Their scoring prowess, most goals in the league pushed them up and out of EFL2. They were top two in assists, shots and that saved them. They are back in EFL1
And the other drop-in from last season? That would be Red Bull Leipzig. They made a run at getting back up for quite a while, but eventually they slipped to eighth. They will settle in with their Red Bull brothers, Salzburg. Maybe another year of EFL2 will get them wiings…..
We will be back for the playoffs.
