You never know how West Ham will line up, tehy mix it up a fair bit but we felt we'd go for them. Despite missing Gavi, I figured attack and see what comes of it. West Ham had similar ideas but we went 2 up inside 21 minutes and looked comfortable, both sides switched it up a bit and bang, 2-2 in no time. Back level A vs A but we managed to find the two goal lead before half time again. Second half was a back and forth with no extra goals, but a great opportunity for us to get one or two players minutes which is something we want boxing off ASAP.
But we played a good game, as did West Ham, then again A vs A for large chunks will make chances and what not, just pleased we had a greater level of finishing on the day. We find ourselves top and to be honest it's been a fair swing recently to see us there, but with 3 of us on the same points and still 23 games to go, we've nowhere near won nothing yet and still have work to do if we are to maintain it!
Wolves looked the better side from the first whistle to the last. Finally, Portuguese striker Goncalo Guedes, recently signed from Red Bull Leipzig, opened his account with, not just one, but two second half goals. The first was a superbly placed header from a Charlie Cresswell cross and the second came courtesy of a Matheus Cunha pass followed by a chip into the net from Guedes. Academy graduate Claudio Bellucci also scored his first goal for the senior side with the very last kick of the game. Wolves were good value for their three point haul which keeps them in a decent position in the table.
Back to the FA Cup next in a match up with Championship side Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground in the fourth round. Both sides have full squads to select from for this game.
Another game another defeat and another 90 mins where we can't find the back of the net.
We played attacking in the hope of scoring first and trying to control the game from there but with Chelsea alternating between passing and counter attacking I felt it was inevitable they would take the lead and on the stroke of half time they did just that. Thereafter it was C v C and in truth I was never convinced we were going to score and Chelsea ran out deserved winners.
Steve has the Spice Boys going well and full credit to him they are challenging up at the top whereas we are trending majorly in the opposite direction and our lack of goals is absolutely appalling.
We have to start getting results quickly but with Man City up next (in the league) things are more likely to get worse before they get better.
Absolutely no disrespect to Barnsley intended, but this is a game I really felt we had to win to keep us away from the bottom three. Can’t fault the performance, twelve shots on target to Barnsley’s one, but we just couldn’t get the all important goal to take the points. Midtable is so congested though, we did gain a place to 12th but it’s a precarious position at the moment.
It’s a weird season. Only one defeat in six, only the top three and Arsenal have lost fewer than us, and only the bottom two have won fewer than us. Unsurprisingly we lead the league in draws!
Any game verses Livi is one that I look forward too and we've had many battles over the years. In this one Chelsea had a little too much for Liverpool with new signing Ben Chilwell scoring the winning goal on his debut after signing from Roma. The stats show this was a deserved win and we now sit a little clear of the rest in 3rd place, and somehow also sit joint top of the league with only goal difference seperating three sides. Could be an amazing season. GG Livi.
Another point for Arsenal this time away at Ellend Road against a Leeds side who went into the game close to Arsenal. Leeds have undergone some big changes of late with the Manager bringing ion some top talents and seems to have got the side firing so another draw and point away from home should be enough to please the Arsenal Manager who got to see both of his strikers score for the first time in a while. It was Leeds who probably deserved more than the draw but Arsenal got to take a point back to London that sees them sit in fifth place after 15 games.
The boss had this to say ;
" We are still a little bit off the pace of the leaders and need to work harder but Im still pleased with the position we find ourselves in. With all the hype on the usual lot, we can quietly go about our business and carry on trying to get the points needed to pressure the sides around us. A good point away at a tough fixture which sees us draw against both City and now Leeds so we go back home happy today ".
