Dominant where it mattered, in front of goal today. We risked the attacking approach as Saints countered us early on then wanted to trade blows as time went on. However we did prove too strong and killed the game early enough with a 3-1 lead, we took the risk of throwing players on a little earlier than normal and still looked comfortable. It was job done really, 4 more goals, spread across the team and 3 points moves us nearer to City, with Villas new manager getting a debut win, but with 5 points to claw back, still looks a bit much right now but we'll just keep trying to tick wins off.
One of the perks of returning to the game is coming up against people who I did many years ago and have great respect for, some lovely nostalgia!
Tough result for us - conceded the penalty early but then really were just about in the game given the gulf in roster quality until right at the very end when Alba killed it off. Liverpool scored with 2 of their 5 shots on target, so Livakovic getting to 26 rated can't come soon enough.
Not panicking too much, it's a really congested league table and we are in a hard run of fixtures at the moment. This one ends our little four match unbeaten run in the league but onto the next.
Great to play you again after all these years Livi, best of luck for the season.
Both teams started on the counter, until Bobby Firmino scored the first goal on 9 minutes and then the Gunners switched to passing while we remained on the counter attack, which of course suited us better. Firmino completed his hat trick in the second half and Leao got the 4th goal, with Olise getting the consolation goal for Arsenal. A good win for Chelsea which pushes the blues back into 3rd placed, and equal 2nd bar the goal difference, 5 points behind City who finally lost a game in the league.
A trip down memory lane right enough - it's been too long Mr Brunton but great to see you back. Still holds FFO's most impressive feat (in my opinion) when he went an entire league campaign undefeated with Bristol Rovers. A true legend.
Anyway we made the trip to Selhurst Park on the back of a horrible run of league results that sees us flirting with the relegation spots so to say we were in need of a win is an understatement. We set up 42031E expecting the counter attacking approach from Palace and we got ahead early. We changed to N which only served to leave things in the balance the rest of the way with the home side giving as good as they got until veteran substitute Jordi Alba fired in an injury time goal to finally let us breathe easily. 2-0 is harsh on Palace though.
We need to try and build on this but we've got some really tough fixtures ahead so it's going to be easier said than done.
As I say great to see you back Rob, all the best for the rest of the season and beyond.
The run of form that Arsenal have been on lately came to an end in the London derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with the Gunners falling 4-1 to The Blues. Arsenal found themselves three down after a Bobby Firmnho hattrick and the reply from Michael Olise in the sixty third minute meant nothing really with Leo restoring the three goal lead with the home sides fourth goal to send Arsenal back to North London with nothing.
The Arsenal boss spoke after the game ;
" A game where we didnt really turn up for which is annoying after playing so well of late. We gifted them so much of the game which you just cant do against a side of that quality and they punished us so we have ourselves to blame for the defeat. We have been playing well of late so of course to lose so heavily in a London derby is far from acceptable and we will be looking to put that right in the next game ".
