Good, solid professional job from the lads tonight, and nice to see a clean sheet.
We decided to switch things up a bit, after being a bit predictable of late, and the E did it's job early on versus the C, and we then switched to keep TA when we scored.
We also brought on Zeze for some minutes and to solidify the back line once ahead, so all in all a bit more thought out and cautious approach than of late.
Leverkusen were always in the game to their credit, and the stats were only a little in our favour.
Berardi got man of the match, playing in a deeper role than usual, scoring his 10th of the season. Rovella also had a good game in the middle, and netted too.
So, we finish January with 7 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss, including cup games, can we do it again in February? no is the short answer. Some harder tests are to come and only at midseason can we have a more accurate judge of how things might be headed, but it's definitely been a good start to the season. It must have been because the transfers have stopped for now, despite some interest in a couple of players. No doubt as soon as a defeat comes along, so will the transfer revolving door start up again.
Next up is a home game against Marseille, and then a triple threat of Athletico, Juve and Barca after that.
Well we nearly went and beat PSG but unsurprisingly missed out due to a last kick of the game from our former player! At least it wasnt Bastoni completing his hattrick.
It was as much as Atletico deserved though with a 17-22 shot count rather worrying considering the held home and tactical advantage.
Its a decent point but their are plenty more touch games to go and after a terrible start to the season Atletico are once again playing catch up.
Marsh commented "I almost got excited but you cant count any chickens when playing PSG. They are always capable of smashing 2-3 goals in as many minutes. We had a lot of defensive quality on the pitch and felt Adopo might just be enough to shore up the middle of the pitch and see us over the line but it was not to be".
Bayern away next up and its a game Atletico reallly need to win to avoid falling behind in the race for finishing somewhere near the top few.
A real goal fest here, as we struggled to keep out a very strong side. We were soundly beaten and can count ourselves fortunate to score three as Barcelona created double the chances we did. Not a sound display defensively at all, and something we will need to adjust moving into games against big sides. Good game Mati.
