Not a super pretty performance but enough to take a deserved victory and move into the semi-finals. Pogba has been majestic since his arrival, scoring again today and then Adama Traore scored his 18th of what has been a wonderful season.
The downsides of today are Traore hitting his five yellows, but also the three game injury to Gosens. You expect the DP to start causing issues around this time of the season, but long injuries like that are most unwelcome. We’ll need to be inventive with the unavailabilities against Sheff Utd, but Gosens will also miss Bristol City and the FA cup semi.
The main thing is that we’re in the semi though. Looking at the teams left, we will be the side people want to draw even with our decent form of late. Personally I’m just delighted to make both domestic and European semi finals in my first season back.
Well played Tyler, great run for Wrexham and sorry we had to end it.
We were fairly sure we'd face a counter attacking approach so rolled out the long ball approach and within 18 minutes we were 2-0 up. Saints switched to all out attack and we persisted with just hoofing it anywhere and that was that scoring wise, delighted to progress to the semis and keep our season going for at least another week.
Talking of which we've just discovered that we've drawn Crystal Palace in the semi final. On the face of it the most favourable draw for them and us to be honest as the Manchester clubs are both far stronger. Rob is already working his magic at his beloved Selhurst Park though so we are under no illusions as to how difficult a task lies in wait.
Man Utd 1 - 3 Chelsea (Match abandoned after 75 mins for unknown reasons) Man Utd 3 - 2 Chelsea (Replay)
Chelsea raced into a two goal lead. Kimpembe then saw a red card and we was down to 10 men. This didn't seem to hurt us too much as we added a 3rd goal to lead the game 0-3. Man Utd scored one on 74 minutes thanks to Diaz, and Chelsea were back on the attack with Casamiro lining up a shot on 75 minutes when the game was unexpectedly called off for no real reasons. Man Utd did sub someone on at 75 minutes and did a whole host of positional changes, but I can't be bothered to look into the whys.
Regardless, from a great winning position, including having a D at +1 late in the game in our back pocket, we were robbed off an almost certain victory.
Beating Utd twice in a row away from home, is never easy, and we couldn't quite manage it in the replay. A sour way to exit the cup, and not a game that highlights the best of FFO that is for sure. One to forget.
We wanted to make sure we got through and didn't crash out of the cup and we performed like a well ran engine today, smooth and faultless. Despite conceding first we kept our heads and controlled the tie. We levelled when Sterling scored on 22 minutes. Once a Chelsea target and despite a deal being agreed, maybe it's a bit of karma in him scoring the important first for us. Luis Diaz scored two goals for us to go three up, the two almost like a copy and paste rerun of each other. Chelsea did score one late on but we never really felt worried in this tie.
Ofcourse, the tie had to be replayed with the ESMS gods up to no good causing the first run to be abandoned at 75 minutes. We was 3-1 but still dominating the entire game with lady luck on Chelsea's side. But football is a 90 minute game and these rare unfortunate instances have happened in the past and the message was be better on the result that counted so maybe that is the grand takeaway from this one.
