With Skriniar suspended and Martinez injured Atletico would gone into this game a wounded animal. Yes, they would have the weapons to hurt Palacr but an open game may have led to them losing the whole tie should their goalkeeper Dahmen fall flat.
Manager Simon Marsh commented “We opted to park the bus for large parts of the game to protect our weakness. We would have been happy with a 0-0 draw and then rise to the challenge of beating palace away but we got miles more with a great result. Martinez will be back for the second leg so hopefully we can finish the job and get to the final”.
Liverpool made great steps to also take a final spot but nothing is certain yet with the ties only half time
We set up to try and get tactical advantage over the expected counter attacking approach but Rangers surprised us and mixed things up starting with a long ball style of play. The 1st half was an absolute non event with very little action but the 2nd exploded into life with the home side taking the lead before switching to counter attack and we then quickly scored twice through Alaba and Rashford.
We certainly deserved to win looking at the stats and the result puts us in the driving seat going into the return leg but it's certainly far from over. Looking like the winner will play Atletico in the final with the Spaniards taking full advantage of their surprise inclusion in the competition.
