Real Madrid 1 - 1 Chelsea...Chelsea win 4-2 on aggregate
Going into this game already two goals behind, what was an uphill task quickly turned into an mountain as as the opposition scored straight form the kick off. With a bit more rub of the green today we might just have been able to make a fist of this battle but no complaints overall.
Even game in terms of chances (24-23 in our favour) but our visitors managed to tackle 54% of them (vs the typical 37%). In terms of shots, City bossed the game and were unfortunate not to score. So many times this season we have bossed games and not won, so it makes a pleasant change to be on the other side. Our goalkeeper put in an inspired performance making 12 saves, and ought to have got the MoM.
We make 4 CL semis in 4 seasons and our focus is now on the cups after suspensions have totally screwed our league campaign. Already had players missing for 13 games plus many additional games ending with 10 men. We will rest players near to suspensions for the cup games, with CL qualification now the target.
With Man City and Real Madrid out, the CL is now wide open. Inter have done the double over us in the league, so it would be preferable to avoid them in the semis.
GG and unlucky Nick
A tactical masterclass from Talbot over the two legs see's the West London Spice Boys into the dreamland of the Champions League Semi Finals - taking the scalp of the favourites Real Madrid! Talbot dominated Greaves once again with Chelsea having the best of it tactically for 94 of the 95 minutes. An early goal from KDB settled the nerves and Madrid walked right into Talbot's trap, as Chelsea kept things tight but solid and even ended up having the best of the game with 15-19 chances in favour of the away side and 61% possession which was an embarassing stat for the home side being out played at the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid scored a late one, but it was too little, too late, and Chelsea was through. Beating Real Madrid over two legs and looking good doing so in both games is no mean feat and the players should be proud. We have over achieved so far with 2 cup semi finals but it's now a matter of seeing if we can do the unthinkable and go 1 or 2 steps better.
I thought I'd already said bye to Real Madrid after winning my 6th EFL1 title in the summer, but as former famous boy band once said, you may hate me but it ain't no lie, Baby bye bye bye, Bye bye Real Madrid!
We took a draw into the second leg and if we felt short changed after that game, then this one took the biscuit for us and cemented to where this club is at the minute. We played as well as we ever have done and going away from home, scoring three and still losing despite being the better of the sides on the day just confirms the kind of run we seem to be on which as a result, ends our Champions League quest for another season.
Another double for Timo Werner who now makes it sixteen for the season is the real talking point and a player that we only intended to keep for a season seems to be making a plea to stay on after this one but with so much up in the air right now, nothing is certain right now.
Played Cheyenne, best of luck to the teams in the semi finals.
