Teamsheets MUST be in by 3pm on Game Day
BONANZA DETAILS COMING SOON
We used this game simply as getting minutes in players, we were out and nothing to play for, yet with 2 much weaker players in the XI against a pretty strong Arsenal side. Our old boy Saka scored against us early, we scored our 2 in the first half, with their old boy Asprilla scoring one.
Then before half time, both teams finished with 10 men, with another of our old players getting a red! A mixed day for the returning players for sure.
But we know we've had an abysmal campaign, we've had issues all season keeping the ball out the net and to kick when you down, we miss our main defender for 3 more games with his 3rd red card of the season.
We came into this game knowing we had to better Leeds’ result against Real Madrid. We were fairly confident that we could progress but after reading the Real Madrid/Leeds game before this one, we knew the comeback dream was over as Leeds won their game 3-2 meaning ours was irrelevant.
We opted to play P while Burnley switched from C to P during the game but a goal from us at the end of the first half put us ahead.
We switched to C and 10 minutes into the second half we had TA as the visitors switched to A for the rest of the game as we saw out the 1-0 win.
We finish 3rd and unfortunately don’t progress, after 4 games we’d given up on making the knockout stages but a big win vs Leeds and results going our way gave us hope but it wasn’t to be and we have to look at the first 4 games where we didn’t win a game and blame that. A poor Champions League campaign for us this season.
Good game Simon. Congratulations to the teams who made it to the quarter finals.
This was a game that was relatively meaningless to us but a game that Leeds had to win, we could easily have gone out all guns a blazing but that could may have handed the game to Leeds on a plate so we decided to make them work hard for it. In a tight encounter that could have gone either way, the game swung one way and then the other but the home side finally edged it. Overall this has been a tough and very tight group, possibly the toughest group of them all so pleased to come through in the end.
We had arguably one of the tougher groups in this seasons Champions League so at the end of the group stage to have progressed through is definitely a job well done and we can thank our good form at the start for it before it tailed off.
A result against United that we really did more than enough to win after being the better of the two sides but the game was decided by the players who moved between the clubs a couple of weeks ago. Saka scoring past his former club, Ansu Fati scoring past his former club and Asprilla scoring the win against his former club but with our place already booked in the next stage rior to kick off, the result wasn't really that important although we deserved more from the game.
All eyes on the draw now with some very good sides making it through. Well done on the other sides who made it past the group stage.
This was a bit of a dead rubber game for us with having qualified already in the last game with the draw against PSG. That said, it was disapointing not to win although we did give some minutes to a handful of squaddies including a full game for the free youth Zefi. Annoyingly the ref blew the whistle earlier than I anticipated, and with the shorter game than normal 2 players still require 2 whole minutes each. I don't think it will be hard to make those though over the 2nd half of the season.
So through to the quarter finals and anything else is a bonus now for us. Either of the Milan's Inter or AC or my old club Real Madrid will await. Madrid are pretty much unchanged from when I left them as champions and obviously look strong so we will look to cross our fingers and hopefully avoid them and face prefeably AC Milan, although we will fancy ourselves verses Inter too.
