BONANZA DETAILS COMING SOON
We figured Inters tried and tested 7 man defence (as some would say) would be the name of the game, we matched their tactic and took the lead. We didn't change our tactic and subsequently conceded the advantage to Inter and they scored just after half time. They found a winner from our old player with 20 minutes left which is frustrating that we didn't kick on, given both teams tried a possession game as the match went on. Another one of those games really, but another game where we have gaps at the back and not enough up front to make a difference.
If we're to salvage the competition we need something to go for us, luck is not with us this tournament.
With ASM out for this one and being away to 1 of the 2 best teams in the game, I didn't expect much out of this one. However, I walk away from the game feeling a little disapointed as we actually had the better of it putting in a good tactical showing and actually winning the stats 10-11 on shots and having 62% possession. I guess the difference maker was the fact that we got 3 of our 11 shots on target while PSG got 7 of 10 on target. That and the fact that they have better shooters. The game changed on 65 minutes when PSG used their vast resources to do a double sub to bring on a couple of quality players and "Rat" immediately scored the opener. The only option we had to bring on was Right Said Fred, and we chose not to on this occassion prefering to get some minutes into the legs of Stepanenko. We were actually a stronger team with Stepanenko in DM rather than Fred so I have no second thoughts on that choice for tonight. GG Ed. The 2 subs and the shots on target made the difference, well done. Now that we have PSG away out of the way, hopefully they can continue to beat everyone else in the group also and it could come down to ourselves or Newcastle in this group for the runners up spot.
A rather odd game this one it has to be said. Burnley who started the game defensively took a two goal lead by the 17th minute while playing that tactic. We pulled a goal back by half time only for the opposition to again extend their lead during the second period. Again we pulled a goal back not long after and then waited until the final minute to bring the game level so this could easily have been a defeat. Front man Rodrygo netted another brace as he continues to score goals for the rest of the team at this stage.
Two points from two games is not a good return so far but at least the group remains very open for all four teams involved.
PSG 2 - 0 Chelsea
An odd game where both managers probably knew what tactic the other would play, but were happy to let the game play out and see what happened. Chelsea set very defensively with the 5 DF / 2 DM C tactic and both teams cancelled eachother out for the first hour. However, on 65 minutes the home team were able to up the tempo, bringing on a 22-21 rated AM and at the same time switching to attack mode. This paid immediate dividends, which prompted a change in tactics from the visitors. This opened the game up a little more, and the hosts were ablw to add a second and end the game comfortable winners.
GG Steve. Hopefully PSG will be through before the return leg.
With a double header against the weakest team in the competition still to come, it looks like qualification should be a formality, unless we get a 3 game injury to the GK in the first game. Although, looking at the tables, winning the group might not be ideal
A boring game between two teams trying not to lose
5 man defences playing C from both Leeds & Juventus meant a dull game with few chances.
There isn’t much else to say about it other than it was an even game with Leeds shading it slightly in the stats.
Despite this being a good point away to the Premier League early pace setters, it’s disappointing to have just 1 point from our first 2 games with games both home & away to EFL 1 Champions Real Madrid on the horizon.
Dull affair but it was always going to be. I knew we would be facing a C and on this occasion I did t feel that we needed to risk anything so I certainly didn’t want to give away TA and I certainly didn’t want to risk the E. I don’t mind playing E at times but not in this group where one slip up is likely to cost you.
we didn’t deserve to win the game, didn’t do enough and so a draw is a fair result here. A couple of wins from our 4 remaining games should hopefully be enough. Plenty of work to do in this one but the group is wide open.
played Andy.
Season 2 Premier League Champions - Leeds
Season 2 Conference Champions - Porto
After such a good result in the first group game against Man Utd, it was important that we followed that up here with another result and we did that, although by a close score line, we make it two wins from two to make the perfect start in the Champions League. Timo Werner has had a slow start to the season so far, injured for a few games but scored a vital goal for us in this one which we hope will be the start of a run for our new signing.
We knew it was important to get something from this especially after our poor result in the league in our last game against Southampton, they have been on a bit of a patchy run of form and we with them fielding four players skilled 20 or less, we had to take advantage and although the stats do suggest a point each was maybe a more fairer reflection of the game, Ill take the three points with open arms.
