Teamsheets MUST be in by 3pm on Game Day
BONANZA DETAILS COMING SOON
I didn't think I'd see us score 5 goals anytime soon but there we are and we get through another cup round, with a further £2.5m in the bank it's massive for us.
The game was chaotic, a 4th minute injury could've scuppered us, but we stormed on and went 3 up at the break. We added another on 58 minutes before we lost our big summer signing to a red card, so 4 up on 64 minutes but a man light. Then as the clock started to run down Schalke scored 2 goals through Aubameyang looking like a late revival could be happening.
We nipped that in the bud with youth prospect Angelo scoring our 5th on 90 minutes, but Schalke kept going and bagged another themselves with pretty much the last action.
It was a close game but I think made closer with the events which happened and the changes we made as a result. I'm delighted this club has another cup tie to look forward to and more cash coming our way from gate receipts, we've already gone further than last year but hopefully we can keep going.
I came up against my old team and we held our own up until half time, but once Milan scored the first and we looked to get back in the game the flood gates opened.
The gulf in quality is clear, but I’m proud of how we played and felt we could have snuck a goal with some of our first half chances.
"This only cements what a good start to the season it has been for us, it was a bit of a rear-guard action from the start and an impressive one it was as I cant imagine there will be many games this season where Madrid are held to 0, obviously the penalty save was a big one and therefore a deserved man of the match for Unai Simon, Lewa was as cool as a cucumber as he made no mistake with his penalty on 81 minutes, its great to win my first El Classico in charge and its onto the next round, we have got a few changes coming in at the weekend and overall quality will suffer in a trade for some top young players coming through the door but I still think theres a good balance there and no reason why we cant carry on a good cup run and also retain Champions League placing in EFL 1"
Strongly suspecting that the opposition would opt for a counter attacking game we decided to try and gain an advantage over them and perhaps that was our downfall in this game especially with the winner coming late on. Play to your strengths a voice in my head kept telling me but I ignored that voice although to be fair we will never know what the outcome would have been anyway.
A tough loss for us sees us exit the cup very early which is disappointing after our run to the final last season.
Roma, despite being under new management and with a weakened squad vs previous seasons, are still a very strong team so we knew it would be a difficult task to go away from home and beat them.
We opted for the same starting tactics as we played vs Atletico Madrid earlier in the week while Roma opted for P, giving us TA from the start.
An even first half came to an end with the score remaining 0-0 and in the second half, that trend continued past the hour mark but on 67 minutes, the hosts took the lead and we switched to match Roma P vs P.
4 minutes later we dragged ourselves level and with 9 minutes to go it looked like we'd won it through Joao_Felix but the officials saw a foul in the build up and into extra time we went.
Roma retook the lead 6 minutes into extra time and held that 2-1 lead until the 114th minute where we made it 2-2 and sent the game to penalties.
We missed our second, they missed their third and after 4 penalties we were level at 3-3. They scored their 5th and our academy player A_Rais smashed his over the bar and we were out.
Statistically Roma shaded the game but when it goes to penalties it's a lottery and we just didn't win this time.
Terrible draw again
Struggled to a 19-20 shot count against 10-men for 66 minutes of game
No luck from a 19-20 shot count
Lost to an ineligible teamsheet
Out early again
We came with a game plan to keep it tight for an hour and them blow them away by bringing on the 2 x 22-21 AMs. Unfortunately, it all went wrong on 39 minutes when TAA was shown a red. On the hour, when the 2 AMs came on, they replaced a DF and DM and the plan was for TAA to drop back into a back 5. Obviously, this never happened and we were left wide open at the back, playing a 40023A for the last 30 minutes. How we won that final 30 minutes 3-1 against home advantage, tactical advantage, and an extra man, i do not know. Marshy can rightly feel hard done to.
Regarding the ineligible sheet, not sure missing an "e" out of a substitutes name is a major misdemeanour - this isnt SSL..
Some interesting results elsewhere, with Real Madrid, and last years finalists, Juventus also exiting. Probably 3 strong teams left - Inter, Roma, and PSG. With our luck with the draws in this competition over the past 2 seasons, I expect an away draw at Inter lol.
Grew up playing at JAFL SSL UCFL for over 20 years. A missing “e” is a random / T-sheet. Hard to shift the past. Golfers can lose their entire weekends on small errors on their score card.
