Sporting Lisbon 1 - 3 PSG
Our reward for beating Ajax away, followed by Barcelona away, followed by Real Madrid away, was yet another away trip to one of the stronger teams left in the competition. We had already beaten our hosts in the league a short while ago, so felt we had the measure of them. Having Vitinha back from injury also gave us more attacking options. The game started with both teams wanting to pass the ball and Ramos fired us into the lead in the ninth minute. We continued to probe , but were unable to add to our tally before the break. After the break we were content to sit back and try and catch our opponents on the counter, which in hindsight, was possibly a foolish move. Lisbon upped the pace on 65 minutes and within 10 minutes they were back on level terms. We immediately brought on ESR at the expense of our defensive Mid and finally decided to throw the proverbial kitchen sink at them. ESR had only been on the pitch 5 minutes before he got the winning goal. Ramos later added a third to make it appear a convincing win on paper. Ramos was awarded the man of the match award for his brace.
We are probably the strongest team left in the competition, but we have lost enough cup games against weaker opposition to realise that we probably wont be lifting the trophy. However, its another £3m gate money and increased prize money, along with a few more abs.
A big win against a team who beat us badly earlier in the season. We stuck with our 52003C which has worked in recent games and after two goals in the opening 13 minutes, we were in control.
I was surprised that Inter didn't go A at any point and only changed to E on 60 minutes, by then it was too late.
Statistically it was an even game and we got fortunate in this one. Into the semi finals we go.
a poor game in all honesty, both sides set up negatively not wanting to give anything away early but early is what Inter did badly and conceded on the 3rd and 13th minute of the game which went on to be the only goals of an eventless match, both teams mustered just 7 shots combined over the 94 minutes and of those shots 4 came from a clinical Juventus who managed 2 goals from four shots, Inter must be concerned with the rate this seasons number one Martinez is conceding with a ratio as low as 4 shots to 1 goal it seems a quick exit may be in order for the much maligned goalkeeper. Juventus won’t care in the manner of the victory especially in the cup as they advance to the semis. Gg Bob
