Ahh, annoying result. Got the tactics right with C/E vs C up into 60 minutes but Chelsea got the all important first goal. We then went on the attack but to be honest didn't really muster much and didn't threaten to get the goal back really. Deflating result, that put's us right up against it. Chelsea away next and then PSG. We never beat PSG so we need a result in London or we are facing an early exit at the group stages for the first time in years for this club. GG AB.
A commanding display from the home side who will only question why they didnt score more goals following 25 attempts on goal. With Roma and Manchester United drawing Atletico moved into a very strong position at the half-way stage of Group A. Victory away at Southampton would be enough to take Atletico through to the last 8.
Manager Simon Marsh commented "A great win for us which gives us a big chance of making the quarter finals. Unfortunate that we miss Sutalo and Vinicius for the away trip to Dortmund but its a chance for the squad to show their worth".
The form of Muani remains a mystery with just 1 goal from 52 chances this season.
A great result for us it must be said. Both teams set up cautiously and it was the first goal that proved to be the game changer, a goal that saw the French giants open up and us take advantage of that. Stats wise the tie was very close but we just clicked on the day and in the final third took the opposition apart. A result that makes a mockery of the form books.
Aston Villa 4 - 1 PSG
In terms of chances/shots this was a very even game, but unfortunately our hosts did more with their shots, and our keeper had a rare off day, conceding 4 goals from 6 shots faced. I previously said that in these type of games the first goal is key, as the scoring team is usually able to go on and control the game, which is exactly what happened here. We conceded an early penalty, and it was downhill from that point. I guess i should be grateful that my goalkeeper didnt get a red card for his misdemeanour. I have been on the beneficial end of similar games this season so take it on the chin. Coupled with Chelsea winning in Madrid, the group is now wide open. We remain in the qualification spots on goal difference, and will probably go back to the summit if we can beat todays opponents next week. We then have two very tough away games, and qualification will likely go to the final round. Former PSG hero, Luis_Diaz grabbed the man of the match award for his brace.
With Man Utd our rivals for 2nd place in the group we decided to keep the game tight and trust our forwards to do the business.
In truth, Man Utd offered little threat with the solid Roma backline snuffing out nearly all attacks. I'd expected our Forward line to score from the 9 chances created but with only 2 on target, it was a woeful display.
We are tied on points with Man Utd and can't help feeling this is 2 points lost.
An unexpected, but deserved win at Real Madrid. With the quality of both the side, and manager we faced I feared the worse, but we set up well and went for it. The win puts us back in the hunt after the Villa defeat, so Im happy with that. Such a strong group but we will be competitive, and teams that face us will know they have been in a game. Good game Steve.
For the neutral this was a great game, goals galore and a swinging pendulum of a game, we went 1-0 behind but fought back to 1-1 and that was pretty much the first half with plenty of chances for both. The second half started bad for us we concede almost instantly but we decided to unlock the shackles and went after City and attacking and from there on in we took control of the game, we had chance after chance and made it count taking a 3-2 lead in the 67th minute, instead of sticking to what was working I made the error of going back into our shell and playing counter, a tactic we lost two goals to already, in hindsight it was wrong choice and we started to lose a grip on the tie and Man City scored in the 93rd minute to level the score. In honesty it was disappointing we did enough to win the game creating most the chances against one of the best sides and managers around, to not capitalise on that and put us in a great position is disappointing but we have played 3 games so far with two of them being away and sit second but with the tightness of the group it means very little as we must win our home ties to qualify, I suspect we won’t see stats like this in the return leg but hopefully we can go toe to toe with Man City and give the fans a good game. After losing to Bayern in the previous round this game was huge, and up against a team who beat us home & away last season so a bit of revenge was on our minds.
Both teams were at less than 100% with Leeds missing two key players to our 1 (Joao_Felix) and I felt like us being at home meant that we had to take advantage of that by being positive and trying to win the game rather than not lose it. So we opted for our attacking tactic with a cautious formation while Leeds played a cautious C approach.
After a very even first 37 minutes, we took the lead and switched to P, with Leeds switching to E maybe expecting us to switch to C if winning.
I'd hoped P vs E would favour us, however 4 minutes into added time at the end of the first half Leeds scored and we went in at the break level.
Into the second half and we had TA with A vs E and after controlling the opening to the second half, we were back ahead n 54 minutes.
Leeds stuck with E at 1-1 and 2-1 and we were back to P. The second half was fairly even with us probably shading it and we ran out 2-1 winners. A huge result considering the group after now 3 games.
Statistically we were the better team and deserved to win the game. Good game Tim.
Our grip on the trophy is slipping after 2 defeats in our first 3 games and Arsenal deserved it by virtue of having more shots on target so fair play to Darren and his boys.
We had a couple of players out and gambled by playing a young 14 rater which in hindsight probably wasn't very clever in such a difficult match. We looked better when he went off and Aubameyang came on but the damage had been done by then.
Feels like we will need to beat Arsenal in the return match to have any chance of going through which will be far from straightforward.
Back to league business and a visit from a Lisbon side who have started the season very well.
Anyway - well played Darren, see you in the return mate.
One of the toughest fixtures this against Barcelona, the current holders of the trophy but w managed to get a vital win to make it two wins out of three in the group stage. Livi's reputation in the game is up there with the best and his record speaks for itself so to get a win must mean we played well and we did. We are in one of the toughest groups this season and the return of two wins from three and sitting top of a very tight table is good going although we know that this group is far from over with some very tough games still to come.
Good to see Correa keep his scoring run going with the second goal coming from Thuram, both goals coming from midfield but the most pleasing this was to see how many chances we created against a top side that is alwys so well organised.
