FC Kobenhaven 1 - 2 Atalanta

A more comfortable night that the scoreline suggests, as we return from Denmark, with our name in the hat for the draw for the next round.

We made one change to the team from New Year's Day with Gray coming in for the injured Palomino.

We took a first minute lead but were pegged back just after the quarter of an hour mark, however we responded well and retook the lead just after the half hour mark, and from there on, we were comfortable in possession (71%), despite not extending our lead.

Sparta Prague 0 Atletico Madrid 7

Atletico moved safely into the last 32 of the competition with a flattering victory at tier2 side Prague. The game action was a lot closer than the scoreline suggested with a shot count of only 12-17. A missed penalty would have made an even more harsher scoreline on the home side. The home side just could not cope with the extra skills on show.

Marsh commented "Very pleased to advance and we will hope for better luck with the cup draw than we have had over the seasons. We got the win, some great goals and even got three fringe players some handy minutes".

Barcelona 2 Fiorentina 0

The holders progress without too much fuss and we are happy enough with our night's work.

Have the utmost respect for Neil and this was never going to be the type of blowout that other clubs enjoyed. Fiorentina made us work for the win but they were always up against it given the gulf in quality of the respective squads.

Will look forward to seeing who we draw in the next round.

Apologies for the error, will need to have a look at things. We played with 3 strikers throughout though so not sure what the issue was.

Fenerbahçe 0-2 Stade Rennais

Did what we had to do on a potentially tricky visit to Fenerbache.
We raced into a two-goal lead after twenty minutes and perhaps the regret will be that we didn't keep pushing for more goals but ultimately whether its 2-0 or 10-0 it only matters to get through to the next round.
In any case, happy to get a first win with Rennes in my first game in charge.

Hibs 2-1 SHAKHTAR DONETSK

A travesty of a result for us. We didn't deserve this for sure. The random set up for the EFL 3 side threw a 523D, which I thought we'd counter well enough. But we trailed first and levelled and on the brink of the full time whistle the Scots scored a winner.

We needed a cup run so that's now over, we just have to hope for a better league campaign. But we didn't deserve this so a bitter one to take.

Always going to be an uphill challenge this one, so set up to try and keep it tight in the slight hope we might nick one.
However it was fairly easy for Barca, particularly after nobbling 2 more of our players!

Not the best of starts, 3 players out for a total of 7 weeks so far, time to start kicking back!

It was a pretty poor show from our 3 superstar forwards who didn't score and our GK who lost an ab.

Hoping to draw Real Madrid in R2 so we can shut them up. They are annoying us already and it's only week 1.

Sociedad 2-0 Villarrreal

Was always going to be a tricky game coming up against Chris. There was obviously a big gulf in quality between the two squads bur he was going to make his side difficult to defeat.
We got the result we needed though and progress to the next round. Happy we avoided a potential banana skin here and kept a clean sheet.
Our two goals came from Carter Vickers and Ilarramendi (making his first appearance for the side since his return).

Difficult game for the yellow submarine against fellow Spanish side Real Sociedad. Villarreal never really looked to worry the hosts and two needless early yellow cards did nothing to settle the visitors nerves. Overall not a million miles off, but there was a definite difference in quality and playing away from home definitely made things harder for Villarreal.

Well played Freddie and good luck in the next round.

Next game for the yellow submarine sees a return to league action as they play hosts to French side Rennes.

Drama at DeKuip, match sub O_Idrissi replacing M_Berry in the 65th minute scores at the 106 mark of extra-time. Sporting 1 - Union Berlin 0

Just because you know what a team will do doesn't mean it is easy to get a result. It was just a really stubborn performance from Union Berlin today who posed a lot of questions today. Our saving grace happened to be just having a lot of strike on the bench we could run out in the second half. Of course, this was almost undone when Morato went down and we had used all our subs. Playing extra time with 10 men is obviously suboptimal but we managed to nick a goal and progress.

Ajax 0 - 5 PSG
I have lost enough of these type of cup games over the years to not take a win for granted. Mati is one of those managers who often seems to have good luck when he plays me! Our hosts started the game with a 5122L tactic and were putting up a good fight until we finally got our noses in front on the half hour mark. They then rotated through tactics over the remainder of the game and were were able to pick them off, coming out comfortable 5-0 winners in the end. Nice hat trick for G_Ramos, but disappointing to see EBH draw a blank. Even more frustrating is the fact that the georgian got a late red, and now drops back to 21 rated after previously levelling up.

Frustrating to see some 3rd tier teams being given 3 DF + A combo random sheets, whilst some get 5DF + C . It has been shown that 3 DF + A is suicide tactics for top tier teams, never mind teams playing 15 rated defenders in a back 3.
